In brief

The Venomous Abyss opens on August 19 in WoW Midnight: eight bosses spread across four wings that open progressively, a raid centered on add management and target control, and an ilvl cap of 344 reserved for the last two bosses on Mythic. The previous week, from August 12 to 19, proves crucial for gearing up and preparing the achievements that demand real coordination.

Patch 12.1 "The Curse of Ula'tek" arrives on August 12, 2026 on European realms. But the raid itself doesn't open the same day: the Venomous Abyss awaits on August 19, alongside the rest of season 2. A week's gap that isn't dead time — it's exactly the window during which you prepare your ilvl, your roster and your list of achievements.

Here's what awaits you behind the door: eight encounters, four wings, and a pantheon of awakened Amani who spend most of the fight throwing adds at your feet.

Where the raid is located

The Venomous Abyss is located on Ringed Isle, off the coast of Zul'Aman, inside the Vaults of Atal'Utek complex. The fiction is crystal clear: the complex wasn't built to house a treasure but to imprison something. That something is Ula'tek, whom Blizzard describes as "the great shame of the Amani empire". If she awakens, Azeroth has a problem.

The season's throughline connects all of this to Zul'jan, held under the influence of Malacrass's spirit, compelled to complete the ritual that would free Ula'tek upon her people.

The 8 bosses, area by area

The raid is organized across five successive locations. Three of the eight encounters pit you against multiple opponents at once, and nearly all of them hinge on managing adds: living venom, hatchlings, mind-controlled allies. If your group is weak on AoE damage and interrupts, that's where it will show.

The Coiling Well

  • Nek'zali the Coiler — a shadow huntress who summons Coilers. First boss, first test of add control.

The Vile Crypt

  • The Entombed Sentinels — two ancient sentinels, to be handled together. Each can use Vitriolic Stasis to heal itself: the race for damage is real.
  • Vashnik the Malevolent — he distills Ula'tek's venoms to strengthen them. The fight revolves around managing pools and Hardened Serpent Venom.

The Crypt of the Coilers

  • The Lost Expedition — season 2's council boss. Multiple targets, shifting priorities, and a member named Hoji who can be included in the fight or not.
  • Sszorak — a creature transformed by Ula'tek's venom. The encounter plays out partly on the room's rings.

The Abyss of Fangs

  • The Twin FangsVexhul and Ithraz, Ula'tek's firstborn. A two-target fight, with a Feral Feast phase where you feed Ithraz.

The Ringed Altar, then the tomb

  • The Ringed Altar — Malacrass's spirit, who holds Zul'jan under his influence. Signature mechanic: Bewildering Fixation.
  • Ula'tek — final boss, with an exclusive mount up for grabs.

The opening schedule, wing by wing

Normal, Heroic and Mythic modes all open together. It's the Raids tool that rolls out in weekly tiers, which completely changes the pacing depending on whether you're raiding with a guild or a pick-up group.

WeekWhat opensBosses concerned
August 19Normal, Heroic, Mythic + Wing 1: The CoilfangsNek'zali the Coilfang, the Twin Hooks
August 26Story Mode + Wing 2: The Essence of VenomThe Entombed Sentinels, Vashnik the Malevolent
September 2Wing 3: The Maze of SerpentsThe Lost Expedition, Sszorak
September 9Wing 4: The Tomb of Ula'tekThe Ringed Altar, Ula'tek

Note the split of wing 1: it mixes the first and the sixth boss of the narrative order. Raider.io/Raid tool players will therefore face the Twin Hooks well before knowing who the Entombed Sentinels are. This isn't a mistake, it's a difficulty balancing choice per wing.

The achievements that need advance preparation

Most of the raid's achievements fall on their own. Four require real coordination, and it's better to know them before the first pull rather than redo a boss for nothing:

  • "Biting Into the Jelly with Gusto" — feed Ithraz during Feral Feast, in the right order: Crispy Appetizer, Sumptuous Soup, Savory Cluster, then Gelatinous Dessert. Get the order wrong, and you lose the week.
  • "Hey, Some Respect for My Stasis" — let each of the Entombed Sentinels heal itself back above half its health via Vitriolic Stasis. An achievement that requires voluntarily holding back damage, the opposite of the usual instinct.
  • "No Scrambled Eggs" — kill Ula'tek before the Greasy Juvenile hatches. Reward: the Ula'took mascot.
  • "Spirits at Ease" — find an ancestral vision and comfort the eight trapped spirits (Talon Queen Kor'bo, Farmer Su'mekaya, Stonecutter Babooi'jin, Hexweaver Vola'ni, Chief Momo'jin, Trapper Haka'li, Scout Jino'ka, Shieldbearer Kora'man). This is exploration, not combat — so it can be done outside of raid nights.

Also worth noting: "To the Well, Little Frog" requires bringing Kupamanduka back to the Coilfang Well before killing Nek'zali, and "Ringed Leaps" requires jumping through each of the rings during Sszorak. Two achievements that a single distracted player can fail for the whole group.

What the raid rewards

This is where the Venomous Abyss earns its status as top-tier content. The Season 2 ilvl cap is set at 344, and it's only reachable on the last two bosses of the raid on Mythic difficulty. No other source goes that high: the Myth track improves from 318 to 341, and Mythic+ stops gaining ilvl beyond a +10 key.

On the titles side, three tiers:

  • Ula'tek on Mythic difficulty → title "Venom's Demise".
  • "Ahead of the Curve: Ula'tek" → kill Ula'tek on Mythic before the next raid tier opens.
  • "Cutting Edge: Ula'tek" → be among the first 200 guilds worldwide to down Ula'tek on Mythic. Title: "the Famed Slayer of Ula'tek".

An economy change deserves mention, because it changes how you plan your weeks: bonus raid tokens go from 2 to 1 per week. In return, item trading becomes free starting week 8. In practical terms, you need to be more selective about which bosses you spend your token on during the first two months, then the pressure eases off.

The week of August 12 to 19, a how-to guide

Seven days to arrive ready. The order of priority that pays off the most:

  1. Raise your ilvl through dungeons: heroic and mythic 0 are accessible starting August 12, before the season opens.
  2. Do the Hunt on normal and difficult, also available starting the 12th, to bank reward track progress before nightmare mode arrives.
  3. Clear the Tidal Cave lair in world mode, which opens on the 12th: it's free loot before the instanced modes.
  4. Read the four demanding achievements above and assign them within the group. No one wants to discover the order of Ithraz's frosts mid-fight.

The Gorges, meanwhile, remain without an abundant version until the 19th: no point farming them this week hoping for high item level.

What to remember

The Venomous Abyss is an adds raid before it's a single-target damage raid. Three multi-target encounters out of eight, an advisor boss, twins, two sentinels: half the content requires knowing what to hit, not hitting harder. Compositions heavy on area damage and crowd control will do well the first three weeks.

And for those aiming for the 344 cap: there's only one path, and it goes through the Ringed Altar and Ula'tek on mythic. Might as well start talking to your guild about it now.

Frequently asked questions

When exactly does the Venomous Abyss open?
The raid opens on August 19 in Normal, Heroic, and Mythic modes simultaneously, plus Wing 1. Story mode arrives a week later, on August 26. The other three wings open progressively until September 9.
What ilvl should you aim for before August 19?
There's no official requirement, but boosting your ilvl through Heroic and Mythic 0 dungeons (available from the 12th) and Normal and Hard Delves gives you real breathing room. The Delves also open on the 12th, so take advantage to build up your reward track before the nightmare begins.
Why does Wing 1 mix the first and sixth boss?
It's a per-wing balancing choice: Nek'zali the Flamewreather and the twin hooks offer consistent difficulty for a first opening. The hooks are tougher than the first narrative boss, so facing them in parallel makes Wing 1 more challenging.
Which raid is the most add-focused?
The Venomous Abyss relies almost entirely on add management: three encounters pit players against several enemies, and nearly all of them summon reinforcements (flamewreathers, juveniles, controlled allies). Groups weak in AoE damage and interrupts are going to struggle.
How do you reach 344 ilvl?
Only the last two bosses of the raid on Mythic drop 344 gear: the Ringed Altar and Ula'tek. There is no other source, including Mythic+ beyond the +10 key or the Myth track, which caps at 341.

Key takeaways

  • The raid relies on add management and multiple targets: three of eight encounters pit players against several enemies, and almost all of them revolve around interrupts.
  • Wing 1 deliberately mixes the first and sixth boss to balance difficulty, which means Raid Finder players will face the twin hooks before they even know who the buried sentinels are.
  • The 344 ilvl cap only exists on the last two bosses on Mythic: no other content, whether Mythic+ beyond the +10 key or the Myth track, goes that high.
  • Four achievements deserve preparation before the first pull: the order of Ithraz's frosts, capping your damage on the sentinels, killing Ula'tek before the greasy juvenile, and finding the eight trapped spirits.
  • Bonus tokens drop from 2 to 1 per week, forcing players to be selective with their spending during the first two months, though item exchanges become free starting week 8.
