In brief

On August 18, 2026, Blizzard rolls out the heaviest balance pass of Midnight's Season 2: 10 Venomous Abyss set bonuses reworked across 9 specializations, some brutally nerfed (Arcane Mage −75%), others buffed (Demonology Warlock). Developers systematically compensate by raising base damage, a rare strategy explained in detail in the notes.

On August 18, 2026, Blizzard released the heaviest balance pass of Season 2 of World of Warcraft: Midnight. It targets the Sting Abyss set bonuses: 10 set bonuses affected across 9 specializations, within a pass that adjusts values for 16 specializations. It's been live for four days: as of this Saturday, August 22, it's already governing your character sheet.

The most brutal change hits Arcane Mage: the 2-piece bonus drops from 20% to 5% damage on Arcane Missiles. The most generous goes to Devourer Demon Hunter, whose ability damage all rises by 14% — but whose 4-piece now only generates 2 soul fragments instead of 8.

A clarification is needed before the numbers. As of August 22, the French version of this page still bears the title "Correctifs : 17 août 2026" and stops at August 17: the entries for August 18, 19, 20, and 21 exist only in English. None of the spells, talents, and hero talent trees cited below therefore have a published French label on this patch notes page. We are leaving them in English rather than manufacturing a translation. Class names, specialization names, and armor set names, however, are those from the French client.

The 10 reworked set bonuses, effect by effect

Here are all the 2-piece and 4-piece Sting Abyss bonuses changed on August 18, broken down effect by effect, with the starting value and the current one. Arcane Mage is the only specialization where both tiers move.

Four specializations see their set strengthened: Beast Mastery Hunter, Mistweaver Monk, Demonology Warlock, and Fury Warrior on the Bloodthirst line alone. For the others, the cut is almost never dry: it comes with an increase in base damage, the subject of the second half of the pass.

The developer notes, the rarest material on the page

This time, Blizzard accompanies most of the entries with a signed explanation, which is unusual for a patch notes page. The method is clearly on display: when a set bonus exceeds its target, the value removed is reinvested into the specialization's base damage. The quotes below are our translation from English.

"The Sting Abyss set bonus is exceeding our target for set bonuses. However, the necessary reduction would have a bigger impact on Arcane's overall damage than intended, so we're also making a slight positive adjustment to its base damage." — developer notes, Arcane Mage, August 18, 2026

Same reasoning on the Demon Hunter side, with the reduction spread across three abilities.

"Devourer's 4-piece bonus is performing well above our expectations, so we're reducing its power. To compensate, we're increasing all ability damage. Additionally, Devourer is overperforming, primarily in single-target, so we're reducing the damage of Reap, Cull, and Eradicate while increasing the AoE damage portion of Eradicate, in order to limit the effect of the change in AoE combat." — developer notes, Devourer Demon Hunter, August 18, 2026

The most instructive note concerns Elemental Shaman: its 5% increase is not a buff, but a compensation.

"We discovered and fixed a tricky bug, active on the PTR, that increased the number of free Maelstrom-spending abilities Elemental Shaman could get from the Sting Abyss 4-piece bonus. This was inflating its damage: on top of the fix, we're therefore increasing damage to compensate." — developer notes, Elemental Shaman, August 18, 2026

The Warrior entry refers back to an earlier fix, from August 14, whose French version exists: "Vengeur : Correction d'un problème à cause duquel Bourreau avait un effet deux fois plus important que prévu." In other words, Slayer is written Vengeur and Executioner is written Bourreau in the French client — two of the rare labels from this pass already officially translated.

"Fury's 4-piece bonus is currently overperforming, but Fury is in a good place overall and we don't want to disrupt that, so we're moving some of its value from the 4-piece bonus into Fury's base damage." — developer notes, Warrior, August 18, 2026

The damage and healing adjustments accompanying the pass

Here is the other half of August 18. Pay attention to the right-hand column: several of these adjustments are explicitly disabled in PvP.

SpecializationAugust 18 adjustmentApplies in PvP?
Frost Death KnightAbility and auto-attack damage +9%Yes
Devourer Demon HunterAbility damage +14%; Reap, Cull, Eradicate −12%; Eradicate AoE at 90% (was 85%)No
Restoration DruidHealing +4% and damage +20%No
Arcane MageAbility damage +3%Yes
Mistweaver MonkHealing +8%No
Retribution PaladinAbility damage +6%No
Discipline PriestAll damage −30%No
Assassination RogueAll damage +4%Yes
Subtlety RogueAll damage +6%Yes
Elemental ShamanAll damage +5%Yes
Enhancement ShamanAll damage +5%Yes
Fury WarriorAll damage +6%Yes

Restoration Druid is the big silent winner: no set bonus touched, but +20% damage and +4% healing, on the grounds that "both of these aspects are lagging behind other healers." It's the biggest damage increase of the entire pass.

Priest: eight lines, two specializations pulling in opposite directions

No class receives more lines than Priest that day, and they contradict each other from one specialization to the next.

On the Discipline side, damage drops by 30% outside of PvP, but the conversion into healing has been raised to preserve throughput: in Oracle, Atonement now converts 46% of damage into healing instead of 32%. Entropic Rift damage increases by 20% to preserve Voidweaver's viability in dungeons, and Void Shield now only reflects 10% of damage instead of 15%.

On the Holy side, four increases, three of them disabled in PvP. Enlightenment regenerates mana 25% faster versus 10%: it's the line that most changes sustain in a long fight. Words of the Wise increases the healing of Holy Word: Serenity and Holy Word: Sanctify by 40% instead of 10%. Prompt Prognosis gains 55% healing. Preventive Measures increases Prayer of Mending healing by 40% instead of 15%. The stated goal: to make Oracle "a competitive option against Archon."

Three lines that appear in neither table

They belong neither to set bonuses nor to global adjustments, yet they change gameplay habits.

  • Subtlety Rogue: Shadow Dance is canceled when switching talents and can no longer be canceled manually. Deathstalker's Lingering Darkness is canceled when switching talents, at the start of a raid encounter, and when starting a Mythic+ dungeon.
  • Demonology Warlock: Burning Cleave, granted by Antoran Armaments, now strikes in a circular area rather than a cone. The tooltip will only be corrected in a future client update: if you read "cone" in-game, it's the tooltip that's wrong.
  • Blood Death Knight: in San'layn, Visceral Strength now only grants 6% Strength instead of 10%, and Transfusion only increases Dancing Rune Weapon damage by 5% instead of 10%. Here too, the tooltip will be updated later.

The sets, at least, do have French names

One point where Blizzard did in fact translate: the Sting Abyss class armor sets, published in French in the Season 2 announcement. For the classes mentioned above, these are the creuset de chevalier de la tombe sinistre, the poursuite de traque funeste abyssale, the écorce de garde-rêve énigmatique, the embuscade de la vipère en maraude, the costume de garde tellurique primordiale, the fourberie du roi-singe, the radiance de la flamme consacrée, the grande tenue de la pénitence cosmique, the trame-sort de l'occision d'élite, the prophétie d'oracle ophidien, the entraves brisées de nécrolyte damnée, and the domaine du seigneur de guerre de jade.

Who wins, who loses, and what to check before the next reset

The net winners, whose base damage rises without their set being trimmed: Restoration Druid, Retribution Paladin, Enhancement Shaman, Assassination Rogue, plus Beast Mastery Hunter, Mistweaver Monk, and Demonology Warlock, whose sets are purely strengthened.

The net losers are two: Blood Death Knight via San'layn, with no compensation at all, and Discipline Priest, whose 30% cut is only cushioned in healing. Frost Death Knight is a mixed case: base at +9%, but 2-piece halved on both of its components.

The cases to retest yourself: Arcane Mage, Devourer Demon Hunter, Subtlety Rogue, and Fury Warrior. For these four, value has been shifted from the set bonus to the base, and the outcome depends on how many pieces you're wearing: at 4 pieces, you absorb both the cut and the compensation; at 0 or 2 pieces, you only get the compensation.

Three checks to make before the end of the week. Recount your set pieces: this is the variable that determines whether August 18 helped or hurt you. Don't trust the tooltips for Burning Cleave, Visceral Strength, and Transfusion: Blizzard states they still display the old values. Rerun your simulation if you play Arcane Mage or Devourer, the two specializations whose 2-piece vs. 4-piece trade-off is most likely to have flipped.

One last marker, this one published in French: the week of August 26 opens Story Mode for the Sting Abyss raid and its second wing in the Raid Finder tool. That's the deadline to aim for — keeping in mind that Blizzard may still adjust values before then, as this page is presented as a living document.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Blizzard nerfing Arcane Mage so brutally?
The set bonus far exceeded the developers' target. Rather than weakening overall damage, they're reducing the 2-piece bonus from 20% to 5% and compensating with a 3% increase to ability damage, a method applied to almost the entire pass.
Is Devourer Demon Hunter really getting buffed?
No, that's a red herring. All ability damage goes up 14%, but the 4-piece bonus now only generates 2 soul fragments instead of 8, and Reap, Cull, and Eradicate lose 12%. The base increase just offsets the drop, nothing more.
What's going on with Restoration Druid getting +20% damage?
Blizzard acknowledges that both aspects lag behind other healers, hence the combined boost of +4% healing and +20% damage. This is intentional to make it more viable in dungeons and PvP.
Is Discipline Priest broken with -30% damage?
No, the penalty only applies to non-PvP PvE. In exchange, Atonement now converts 46% of damage into healing instead of 32%, preserving healing throughput. Entropic Rift's damage gains 20% for dungeon viability.
Which pass is the most instructive in the developer notes?
Elemental Shaman's: the +5% isn't a buff but compensation for a tricky bug that was inflating the number of free Maelstrom-consuming abilities. Blizzard fixes the bug and raises damage to avoid a sudden drop.

Key takeaways

  • Arcane Mage takes the harshest nerf: its 2-piece bonus drops from 20% to 5% on Arcane Missiles.
  • Blizzard offsets each set reduction with an increase to the spec's base damage.
  • Restoration Druid gets no set nerf but gains +20% damage and +4% healing, the biggest damage buff of the pass.
  • Discipline Priest drops 30% in non-PvP damage, but its healing conversion rises to preserve throughput.
  • Elemental Shaman gains +5% to compensate for a fixed bug on the Venomous Abyss 4-piece bonus.
