The Sims 4: All Deaths and the Complete Ghost Guide
In brief
The Sims 4 offers around twenty ways to die, from the classic (old age, drowning) to the more absurd (washing machine, vending machine). But death is never final: urns, playable ghosts, and ambrosia offer paths back to life, while ghosts now have their own skills and powers to haunt the living.
Since 2014, The Sims 4 hasn't just been about simulating life: Maxis's game also stages death with an inimitable macabre humor. Between peaceful old age, avoidable electrocution, and unexpected wasp stings, there are now a good twenty ways to lose a Sim. And when the Grim Reaper comes calling, it's not necessarily the end: urns, gravestones, playable ghosts, and ambrosia potion form a complete ecosystem around the afterlife. This guide covers every death in the game, explains how they work, and details the ways to bring a ghost back among the living.
The Grim Reaper, the inevitable master of ceremonies
Every death in The Sims 4 triggers the appearance of the Grim Reaper. This occult NPC materializes in a halo of green mist, hood raised, to come collect the soul of the deceased Sim. Since the January 28, 2025 patch, his cloak has actually been redesigned to reveal more of his rib cage, sticking closer to his historic design from The Sims Livin' Large.
The Grim Reaper isn't just a bystander: he's a genuine way out of the scenario. If another Sim is on the scene when tragedy strikes, they can click on the Grim Reaper and choose to plead with him. The negotiation then depends on the Sim's dominant trait, the context of the death, and sometimes their relationship with the deceased. The outcome is never guaranteed… unless the one pleading has a Death Flower in their pocket, in which case the Grim Reaper always gives in.
The Grim Reaper isn't your enemy: in The Sims 4, he's an afterlife bureaucrat you can argue with, bargain with, and sometimes even flirt with.
Base game deaths: the great classics
Without any DLC, The Sims 4 already offers a fine collection of tragic endings. Most are avoidable… if you keep an eye on your need bars.
- Old age: the only natural death, occurring at the end of the "elder" life stage. The Sim gently passes away with a small, nostalgia-filled scene.
- Starvation: after about 24 hours of gameplay without a meal, the bar turns blood red, then fatal. The resulting ghost has a characteristic pale, ashen color.
- Drowning: exhausting a Sim in a pool from which you've removed the ladders, a classic of Sims lore.
- Fire: a poorly maintained fireplace, a failed cooking attempt, a campfire… fire spreads quickly and burns the Sim within a few hours of gameplay.
- Electrocution: repairing a broken object without Handiness skill can be fatal, especially in the rain.
- Laughing to death (Hysteria): a Sim kept in the "Playful" emotion to excess ends up with a literally shattered heart.
- Fatal embarrassment: pile up "Mortified" moodlets (caught naked, publicly rejected…) and the Sim dies of shame.
- Fatal anger: too many stacked "Furious" moodlets cause a sudden heart attack.
- Scared to death: added with the Paranormal pack, this death strikes Sims kept in a state of fear for too long, often in a haunted house.
- Overexertion: energy bar at zero combined with too much physical exertion, the Sim collapses and doesn't get back up.
- Devoured by the Cowplant: the Laganaphyllis Simnovorii swallows Sims who bite into the tempting cake it holds out from its mouth.
Themed deaths from the expansions
Each pack adds its own share of unique accidents, often tied to its core mechanics. Here are the most notable ones.
Nature, seasons, and wildlife
- Wasp sting (Seasons): provoking a nest in summer without proper equipment exposes you to a fatal reaction.
- Death by freezing (Seasons): a frozen Sim who stays outside in winter ends up turned into a block of ice.
- Death by overheating (Seasons): heatwaves combined with warm outfits or lack of shade condemn the Sim.
- Lightning strike (Seasons): a proper thunderstorm can strike down a Sim who stays out in the rain too long.
- Fatal fall (Sulani, Island Living): failed climbing stunts or hikes can end in tragedy.
- Beetles (Jungle Adventure): drinking a third insect-infested cocktail ends badly, very badly.
Everyday life and household objects
- Hyperthermia in the sauna (Spa Day): staying too long in the steam room at maximum temperature slowly cooks the Sim.
- Fugu poisoning (City Living): preparing your own murkfin nigiri without sufficient cooking skill is Russian roulette.
- Washing machine (Laundry Day): yes, a faulty washing machine can literally swallow up a curious Sim.
- Murphy bed (Tiny Living): the famous Murphy bed, if poorly secured, can close up on a Sim when folding it out.
- Devil goat and other animals: several pet-related packs introduce creatures capable of seriously injuring Sims.
Occult and fantasy
- Sunburn (Vampires): a vampire caught in broad daylight burns up irreversibly.
- Drained of life (Vampires): a vampire who drains a Sim of their plasma down to the last drop finishes them off.
- Deadly mermaid song (Island Living): a vengeful mermaid can drown a Sim by manipulating them from afar.
- Sim-Ripper VR (Moschino kit and geek-oriented packs): this horror-themed virtual reality minigame can literally scare a Sim to death.
- Lack of oxygen (Eco Lifestyle): an area with catastrophic eco footprint can gradually asphyxiate its residents.
On top of that are rarer deaths such as being crushed by a vending machine, the death of a Sim driven mad by an emotional fusion after misuse of witch potions, or even the new bucket-list ending scenarios introduced by Life and Death. That easily takes the tally well past twenty ways to go.
Urns, gravestones, and nightly visits
Upon death, the Sim leaves behind an urn (if they died indoors) or a gravestone (if they died outdoors). These objects aren't just decorative: they serve as the ghost's anchor to the world of the living.
- Stored in the household inventory, the urn generally prevents the ghost from appearing.
- Placed in the house or garden, it allows the deceased to spontaneously return at night, usually after 10 p.m.
- Placed on a public lot (cemetery, park), the ghost joins the community of wandering dead in the neighborhood.
This system is the entry point for playable ghost mode. Simply click on the ghost and choose "Add to Household" to bring them into your family and control them like any other Sim.
Playing a ghost: reinvented needs and powers
Since the October 2024 update and especially the Life and Death expansion, ghosts are no longer just regular Sims repainted translucent. They now have their own renamed needs: "Hunger" becomes Ethereal Sustenance, "Hygiene" turns into Spectral Radiance, and so on. Their color reveals their emotional state as much as their cause of death (yellow ghost for electrocution, blue for drowning, pale white for starvation…).
The new Ghost Mastery introduces a ghostly skill tree with five tiers, from Neophyte Ghost to Transcendent Specter. It unlocks around twenty-two abilities split into two paths: benevolent (comforting hugs, positive aura, extending a living Sim's life) or malevolent (terrifying screams, haunting objects, targeted nightmares). Living Sims can even get a temporary taste of this afterlife by visiting the blue-pink lake in Mourningdale to experience an out-of-body experience lasting about six hours.
A ghost in The Sims 4 is no longer just set dressing: it's a full-fledged character with its own economy, quests, and social interactions.
Bringing a Sim back from the dead
Losing a Sim is never permanent. The game offers four main paths to resurrection, each with its own constraints.
1. The ambrosia potion
This is the canonical method. The recipe requires a Sim who has mastered both Cooking level 10 and Gourmet Cooking level 10, along with three rare ingredients: a Murkfin Fish, a Potion of Youth, and a Death Flower (obtained by grafting a chrysanthemum onto a Death Apple). One variant uses a Life Fruit grown from a seed found in cemeteries and a Deathfish caught between midnight and 4 a.m. on a funeral lot. Served to a ghost, ambrosia instantly brings them back to life.
2. The Book of Life
A Sim who has completed the Bestselling Author aspiration and reached level 10 in Writing can write a Book of Life about another Sim. If that Sim later dies, they need only read the book as a ghost to come back. Note: a Sim cannot write their own book.
3. The Wishing Well
A reward from the Romantic Garden kit obtained by presenting a perfect garden to the Gardening Club, this well allows a ghost to make a wish to return to life. The success rate varies depending on the Sim's aspiration level and mood.
4. The resurrection cheat
For the impatient, open the console with Ctrl + Shift + C, type testingcheats true, then Shift-click the urn and select Add to Household before using Resurrect. Fast, but reserved for players who don't mind breaking immersion.
