PoE 2: Inscribed Ultimatum and Trial of Chaos Changes in 0.5.5
In brief
The 0.5.5 "Forbidden Rites" update overhauls the Trial of Chaos: you can now leave it at any time and resume later from the same room, each chamber drops its own reward chest (turning all-or-nothing into acquired tiers), and the Trialmaster stops freezing time repeatedly. Modifiers finally display their true values instead of remaining vague, while Inscribed Ultimatums allow two free rerolls after 10 trials.
The 0.5.5 "Forbidden Rites" update to Path of Exile 2 brings with it the overhaul that Grinding Gear Games has been announcing since its livestream on August 27, 2026: that of the Trial of Chaos. The detailed patch notes only dropped during the night of Wednesday, September 2 to Thursday, September 3, 2026: the studio's Steam post is timestamped September 2 at 10:54 PM UTC, that is 12:54 AM in Paris on Thursday, September 3. This is our conversion, not a figure from the publisher.
On the official infographic illustrating this article, the topic occupies one box out of eight, titled "Trial of Chaos Rework". Three lines from the patch notes really change the way the Trial is played: you can now leave it mid-run, each room drops its chest, and the Trialmaster stops repeatedly freezing time.
Leaving a run in progress, and a Trialmaster who no longer freezes time
The studio opens its section with a blunt diagnosis: a run once started had to be completed to the end, and "if you needed to say trade, or stop playing the game for the night, you couldn't do so". The fix is summed up in one sentence: "Now you can leave the Trial of Chaos at any point and resume your run at a later time from the same room."
Note the granularity: the resume happens from the same room, not in the middle of an encounter. Beyond that, the notes stay silent: no validity period for a paused run, no cap on suspended runs, no fate specified for a pending run at a league changeover.
The second lever may matter even more: "There is now a reward chest at the end of each room in the Trial of Chaos. This makes dying less punitive as you don't lose your entire set of rewards." The French client sets the failure threshold: "Trials end in failure when you reach 7 Doom." Reaching it used to wipe out the entire haul; the per-room chest turns this all-or-nothing into locked-in tiers.
The character who comments on your runs — the French client calls him the Trialmaster — loses his most hated power: he now only freezes time "at the very start of the entire run as opposed to in almost every single room". He will still appear for his lines, "but will just not stop time". The studio gives no figure anywhere for the time thus saved, and we won't invent one in its place. Three quality-of-life improvements follow, also uncounted: doors that open earlier, more responsive lifts, and lifts that are "significantly larger" to fit more party members.
Modifiers finally display their values
One sentence sums up the balancing part: "we have added more Modifier Tiers, and significantly reduced the amount of difficulty they were applying", another sums up the readability: "Modifiers are now more explicit in what they do and display actual values". The vague wording they replace does indeed exist. The French client's string dump, consulted on Friday, September 4, 2026, gives for the Protected Monsters modifier: "Monsters are protected by Energy Shield." No value, no unit. That same dump measures the cap the studio says it is raising: 51 entries for 32 distinct modifiers, of which only three reach tier III. How many tiers does 0.5.5 add? The patch notes give no number.
| Modifier (French client) | Before 0.5.5 | What 0.5.5 changes |
|---|---|---|
| Protected monsters | "Monsters are protected by Energy Shield" | The percentage of maximum Life gained as Energy Shield is now displayed |
| Burning / shocking turrets | Tier I: forward projectiles; Tier II: barrages | Single projectile at a fixed frequency, 3 turrets to start |
| Petrification statues | "…numerous statues that Petrify you if you look at them" | 2 statues to start, more later |
Turrets and statues "have been made non-exclusive with each other": choosing one used to make the other disappear for the rest of the run. And difficulty modifiers picked between rooms "now always also increase the quality of drops from slain monsters".
Rewards: currency and Soul Cores, nothing else
The loot table narrows: "The rewards for completing a Trial of Chaos run now consists of only Currency and Soul Cores. Corrupted items are no longer a reward outcome in the Trial of Chaos." The Soul Core, to use the French client's wording, becomes the format's only non-monetary reward.
As compensation, the area gains its own bonuses "depending on the level of the Area": more frequent magic or rare monsters, larger packs, rares with more modifiers, more generous boss drops, and possible Exceptional items. The reasoning matters as much as the list: "This is to compensate for Atlas Passive Bonuses not applying inside the Trial of Chaos." The Trial of the Sekhemas gets the same treatment, but with a numbered threshold, "starting at Area Level 65": the Trial of Chaos, for its part, publishes none.
Inscribed Ultimatums: two retries, and two missing numbers
Upon completing an Inscribed Ultimatum at 10 trials, "you are now able to continue your run immediately without providing another Inscribed Ultimatum item". The retry is possible "twice per Inscribed Ultimatum", and each successful additional attempt awards "a different Trialmaster Fragment". Modifiers and reward quality carry over from one retry to the next, with an optional currency wager added on top, "an optional double or nothing wager" — which the French client leaves untranslated.
This is where the French coverage published after the August 27 livestream departs from the patch notes. Two claims are circulating: end-game attempts would go "up to 30 rooms", and deep rooms would grant "all three Trialmaster fragments at once". Neither appears in the September 2 thread. The arithmetic behind the first can be guessed at — 10 trials, two retries — but that total is never written down. As for the second, the notes assign one fragment "for each subsequent successful run", meaning to each of the two retries, and never mention three fragments.
A third reading also corrects itself just as quickly: escort encounters are not disappearing. Escort the Statue, Sacrifice Monsters and Implant the Soul Cores "now appear less often than the Slay all Monsters and Survive encounters" — less often, not never. The escort encounter has even been reworked: a short grace period outside the statue's area of effect, a clearer zone boundary. Lastly, the arena of Uxmal, the Beastlord has been "redesigned entirely", with this admission: "It no longer needs to fly around being annoying."
The trap of the French version
A word of caution before you go read the source. The address fr.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/4000864 responds, identifies itself as fr-FR, and displays translated wrapping — "Home," "Shop," "News." The body of the patch notes, however, is 100% in English, verified on Friday, September 4, 2026. A 200 status code and an fr. domain prove nothing about the language of the content.
The asymmetry is notable, because the studio does translate some of its Steam announcements. The one from August 27, 2026 exists in French, title and body, and it's our best source for the name of the content: "as well as a major overhaul of the Chaos Trial and much more." The September 2 follow-up, however, exists only in English — and so does the infographic embedded in the French announcement.
Hence the vocabulary used in this guide: the French labels come from the client — Épreuve de Chaos, Ultimatum gravé, Maître des Épreuves, Noyau d'âme, Tourelles brûlantes, Statues de pétrification, Ruine. The names of the encounters, Uxmal, the Beastlord, Trialmaster Fragment, and the double or nothing wager have no verifiable French label: we leave them in English rather than inventing one your client will never display.
What to remember
The three changes driving the overhaul all point in the same direction: making the Chaos Trial interruptible. You can leave whenever you want and resume from the same room, each room drops its own chest, and the time freeze is limited to the very beginning. The price to pay is a narrower loot table: no more corrupted items, only currency and Soul Cores.
And beware of round totals: neither the 30 rooms nor the three fragments in a single attempt appear in the patch notes. The Forbidden Rites league opens Friday, September 4, 2026 at 10 PM Paris time: only from then on can the values displayed by the modifiers be confirmed in-game.
