Backrooms Level 421: How to Access the New Level
In brief
Fancy Games rolled out Level 421 (Plastic Mariana) on all platforms on August 27, 2026, with two brand-new entities and one variant. But the real change is the security flaw fix that, until yesterday, allowed any player to force their way into your private lobbies — update your entire group before your next session.
Fancy Games released Level 421 — Plastic Mariana for Escape the Backrooms on Thursday, August 27, 2026, on all platforms simultaneously: PC, Xbox Series X|S and Game Pass, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2. This is the first brand-new level since the 1.0 launch in October.
On August 21 we detailed what had been confirmed about it ahead of release. Here's what the update actually contains — plus the fix nobody will notice even though it affects everyone: until yesterday, a player could enter a private lobby without having been invited to it.
The fix that needs to be mentioned first
It's a single line, buried in the middle of the network section:
« Fixed a bug that lets players access private lobbies they hadn't been invited to. » — Fixed a bug that let players access private lobbies they hadn't been invited to.
In a cooperative horror game meant to be played with four friends, a private lobby is the feature. The studio says neither how long the flaw existed, nor how it was exploited, nor whether the fix applies server-side or client-side; we won't go beyond the official text. As a precaution, make sure every member of your group installs the update before your next private session.
Three other entries from the same network block are worth knowing about, because they explain behaviors many had chalked up to bad luck:
- Lobby codes weren't working across platforms — your friends could appear offline or fail to connect. It wasn't their console.
- On Hard difficulty, the host would die instantly if another player left the game.
- The host couldn't see players who joined mid-game in the list in the top-left corner.

What Level 421 « Plastic Mariana » is
The studio's description is short, and deliberately sparing on details:
« Explorez une base abandonnée du M.E.G. rattachée à un hôpital pour enfants. Trouvez le chemin du Bruce's Discovery Center et tombez à travers la zone de no-clip dans l'obscurité d'une piscine à balles. Faites attention cependant, car vous n'êtes pas seul… Qui est votre ami, et qui est un ennemi ? »
Three structural landmarks emerge from this, and they're enough to know in what order the level is traversed:
- an abandoned M.E.G. base, fused to a children's hospital;
- the Bruce's Discovery Center, which must be reached;
- a no-clip zone that drops you into a ball pit submerged in darkness.
The level's exit, announced on August 20, leads toward Overgrowth.
Two brand-new entities, and a variant
The content line is precise: « Added Level 421 (Plastic Mariana), alongside two new entities and an entity variant. » That is, two new entities plus a variant of an existing entity. The studio gives neither their name nor their behavior.
The question posed by the description — “Who is your friend, and who is an enemy?” — suggests that at least one of them mimics something harmless. In a ball pit where you can't see anything, this is a threat of a very different nature from those the game has accustomed you to. Be careful on the first playthrough: don't split up.
Nine progression blockers fixed, across seven levels
The “Levels & World” section of this patch is actually a list of soft locks — situations where you're not dead, but the game can no longer progress. There are nine entries spread across seven levels, counting the one listed in the network block. If one of these levels had blocked you, there's no longer any reason to avoid it:
| Level | What was blocking |
|---|---|
| Level 37.2 | The ladder would push you out of the playable area or block the run |
| Thalassophobia | You could get stuck behind the couch on the stairs; and a jump onto a specific pole at the end would block everything |
| Darkened Suburbs | You could get trapped in the cage with the Fletcher; and you could “fall” indefinitely into a bathtub |
| Level 94 | Wooden crates would permanently get stuck in certain corners of the castle's first room |
| Terror Hotel | A jump onto a table would block the first section; pressing F right after solving the padlock would also block it |
| Level 188 | Joining a game already in progress upstairs would make you clip through the environment |
| Arcade (Xbox) | The arcade cabinet was unusable, making the Arcade ending unreachable |
This last line deserves a mention: on Xbox, one of the game's endings was simply out of reach. Ending hunters can now resume.
Switch 2: three fewer blockers
Nintendo's console accounts for the rest of the blocking fixes:
- pressing the confirm button multiple times while joining a lobby no longer freezes the game;
- joining a lobby hosted on Steam no longer freezes the game either;
- the controller no longer drops inputs in menus.
On the PS5 side, a crash when creating a game in Story mode or in the Hub, with the console in offline mode after a cold start, is also gone — as is a more annoying issue: blocking a player didn't stop them from continuing to communicate with you, either in the lobby or in-game.
The soundtrack has changed too
A detail the release announcement doesn't mention, but the one from August 20 did: the main Backrooms theme by Ins0mic was re-recorded with Norwegian producer and DJ Vairo, under the title “Wanderer.” The full track can be heard on Vairo's platforms. If the game sounded different to you at launch, that wasn't just your imagination.
What to actually do
- Update the whole group, not just the host: the private lobby fix only works if no one is left on the old version.
- Go back to levels abandoned due to blockers — seven of them are affected, including the Arcade ending on Xbox.
- Tackle Level 421 with a tight-knit group: two unknown entities and a variant, in an environment with no visibility.
Fancy Games publishes its update notes in English only, even though the game ships with French, German, Spanish and nine other text localisations. Level and entity names below are quoted exactly as they appear in the studio's announcement.
