WoW Midnight: unlocking and playing the new Haranir race
In brief
The Haranir, an enigmatic people born from Azeroth's subterranean roots, have finally arrived as a playable allied race in WoW Midnight. To unlock them, players must complete the narrative campaign and finish the final quest "The War Beyond the Roots" in 5 to 10 hours of gameplay. With nine available classes, versatile racials, and deep customization (exclusive Druid forms, bioluminescence), the Haranir stand out as a rich choice for alts and roleplayers.
Since the official release of World of Warcraft: Midnight on March 2, 2026, a single new allied race has joined the roster: the Haranir. This enigmatic people, first glimpsed in The War Within in the person of Orweyna, are finally emerging from their bioluminescent underground jungle to join the ranks of both the Alliance and the Horde. Here's the complete guide to unlocking the Haranir, understanding their racial abilities, and choosing the best class to play as one of these guardians of the World Tree.
Who are the Haranir? Lore and origins
The Haranir are an ancient people living in the primordial jungle of Harandar, a vast biosphere nestled within the interwoven roots of Azeroth's World Trees. Cut off from the rest of the world for millennia, they have developed a culture shaped by underground tunnels, glowing mushrooms, living wood, and carved stone. Their art is built on magical paintings capable of preserving memories, a mechanic players discover throughout the Harandar campaign.
Physically, the Haranir evoke a cross between trolls, night elves, and a plant-like creature: skin marked with floral patterns, luminescent spores, and bare feet adapted for climbing giant roots. Their historic leader, Oráweyna, serves as the link between the Haranir and the factions: she is the one who ultimately agrees to open Harandar to both sides in the face of the Void threat gnawing at the roots of the World Tree.
The Haranir lore draws directly from the chronicles of Azeroth: they are said to be the forgotten guardians of a garden planted by the Titans even before the arrival of the Trolls. Their language, made up of hissing sounds and root vibrations, has never been transcribed by Kirin Tor scholars. Midnight puts this people back at the center of the narrative, as their World Trees represent the last barrier against the Void corruption spreading from Quel'Thalas.
How to unlock the Haranir: the overview
Unlike the allied races from Dragonflight, which required Exalted reputation, the Haranir follow the Earthen model: no reputation grind, but the requirement to complete a full narrative campaign. Expect to spend 5 to 10 hours of playtime since Midnight's launch to unlock the race, depending on your pace.
The official prerequisites:
- Have completed the main Midnight campaign, which successively covers the Woods of Eternal Song, Zul'Aman, Harandar, and then the Void Storm.
- Have unlocked and completed the full storyline of the Harandar zone, the third chapter of the expansion.
- Complete the achievement "Allied Race: Haranir", which automatically unlocks character creation across your entire Battle.net account.
Tip: if you got early access to Midnight, you may have already completed the campaign during the first week. All that's left is to finish the final quest detailed below.
The final step: the quest "The War Beyond the Roots"
Once the Harandar campaign is complete, head to Silvermoon, the restored blood elf capital that serves as Midnight's main hub. Go to the Gardens of Remembrance, near the portal to Harandar. This is where Hagar the Elder, a Haranir who has come to negotiate the alliance, will give you the quest "The War Beyond the Roots".
The process is simple:
- Accept the quest from Hagar the Elder near the Harandar portal.
- Cross the portal and turn in the quest at the Sanctuary of Light, deep in the heart of the bioluminescent jungle.
- The closing cinematic validates the achievement Allied Race: Haranir and grants you the bonus mount.
Faction and available classes
Like the Earthen before them, the Haranir are a neutral race: at character creation, you can freely choose between the Alliance and the Horde. A single unlock is therefore enough to create Haranir on both sides.
The race grants access to nine classes, covering every role (tank, healer, ranged DPS, melee DPS):
- Hunter
- Shaman
- Warlock
- Druid
- Warrior
- Mage
- Monk
- Priest
- Rogue
Notable absences: no Paladin, no Death Knight, no Evoker, and no Demon Hunter. This is perfectly consistent with the Haranir's cultural isolation, foreign to both the Holy Light and the Scourge.
Haranir racial abilities
The Haranir have five racial abilities fully integrated into their nature/roots theme. Three passives, two actives.
- Thornburst (active, 3 min cooldown) — Causes thorns to erupt in a targeted area, dealing damage to up to 8 enemies and healing up to 8 allies within a 10-yard radius. A small AoE burst and emergency healing tool.
- Rootwalk (active) — Teleports you to the Cradle, the Haranir's point of origin. Once in Harandar, the ability also lets you jump from one World Tree to another via their roots: a strategic travel tool.
- Subterranean Predator (passive) — +10% experience against Aberrations, Beasts, and Elementals, and +1% damage dealt to these creatures. Useful for leveling and certain raid encounters.
- One with Nature (passive) — +5 to Herbalism and +10 to Finesse. The profession bonus makes the Haranir an excellent choice for a gathering alt.
- Unleashed (passive) — +1% to critical damage and critical healing. Modest but scales very well at high difficulty.
Racial mount and heritage armor
Completing the unlock immediately grants you the Ivory Chagrynx mount, a feline/reptilian predator characteristic of Harandar's wildlife. This is the Haranir racial mount, usable by every character on your account.

On the transmog side, the Haranir heritage armor is not unlocked right at character creation: as with other allied races, you'll need to level a Haranir to level 80 without a boost to receive the full set matching your faction. This themed set features the race's floral and bioluminescent motifs, with two distinct variants for the Alliance and the Horde.

Good to know: the level 80 boost included with the purchase of Midnight can be used on a Haranir without restriction. But if you do, you lose access to the heritage armors.
Customization: bioluminescence and druid forms
Blizzard has gone all in on Haranir customization. The options cover:
- Bioluminescent paints on the face and body, with several patterns that glow in dark areas.
- Teeth, feet, colored hair streaks, eye makeup, and face paint — allowing you to make Haranir look either closer to trolls or more slender like elves.
- Horns and plant-like antlers, as well as living wood accessories.
The Haranir Druid is particularly polished. Its forms are all-new:
- Bear Form: a giant pangolin covered in luminescent scales.
- Travel Form: a running pangolin.
- Flight Form: a feathered bat first glimpsed in The War Within.
- Cat Form, Moonkin, and Treant forms carry on the roots/mushrooms theme.
Best race + class combos for a Haranir
On paper, Haranir racials are generalist (no bonus is spec-specific). But a few combinations stand out:
- Druid — This is the thematic no-brainer. The exclusive forms and the lore-racial synergy make it the number one choice for roleplayers. Balanced in PvE across all specs.
- Hunter (Survival) — The Underground Predator bonus combines perfectly with the hunter identity of Aberrations and Beasts, which are very present in Midnight dungeons.
- Restoration Shaman — Thorn Bloom adds a welcome AoE healing burst in Mythic+, and Unleashing benefits critical heals.
- Rogue — The Finesse bonus from "One with Nature" is consistent with the class identity.
- Discipline Priest — Thorn Bloom complements the reactive healing kit nicely and bumps critical score.
For high-level PvP, Haranir racials are decent without being meta. Root-Walk remains, however, a handy repositioning utility in open world and in War Mode. If you're looking for an optimized race for rated arena, stick with a Blood Elf (Alliance: Human) or a Dark Iron Dwarf. Haranir hold their own, but they shine mostly through their visual identity and their utility toolkit.
Going further
Unlocking the Haranir is only the tip of the iceberg. The Harandar storyline also serves as a gateway to Arcantina, Midnight's new magical crafting system, as well as to the expansion's first raid. So take the time to actually read the quests rather than spamming the accept button: the narrative rewards attentive players with several hidden reputation bonuses with the Haranir faction.
