In brief

The Herald of the Dawn achievement only requires a single trial of your choice, not three: 1,600 rated PvP, 2,000 Mythic+, or Midnight's Toll on heroic. You have until Wednesday morning in Europe to pick the cheapest door for your character and grab the crystallized dawnsteel mana flow.

Blizzard's post listing what's going away with Season 1 of Midnight contains a conjunction that many players read too quickly: "Complete one of the following achievements". The achievement Midnight Season 1: Herald of the Dawn doesn't require three trials, it requires just one, of your choosing: a rating of at least 1,600 in rated PvP, a Mythic+ rating of at least 2,000, or a win over the Midnight Toll in the March on Quel'Danas on Mythic or Heroic difficulty. Its reward is spelled out plainly in the announcement: the crystallized dawnsteel mana flux, used to imbue armor at the Silvermoon catalyst.

The practical consequence is significant: you don't have three objectives to race through before the switchover, you have one door to choose, whichever is cheapest for your character. And if you already meet one of the three criteria, the box is already checked.

What remains unclear is the timing. The post gives no date and no time, and the word "maintenance" doesn't appear once. What is established is the other end of the chain: Season 2 opens on Tuesday, August 18 on North American realms and on Wednesday, August 19 on European realms. From these two dates and the weekly reset — not from any announcement — we can deduce that Season 1 closes at Wednesday morning's switchover in Europe: two evenings ahead of you, this Monday the 17th and Tuesday the 18th, just one in North America.

A 1,600 rating, a 2,000 rating, a boss: three doors to the same reward

The doorWhere it's playedWho it's cheapest for
Rating of at least 1,600 in rated PvPSolo Shuffle, rated Blitz battlegrounds, arenasAlmost everyone: the rating resets match after match
Mythic+ rating of at least 2,000Completed Mythic+ keysOnly those already hovering just below the mark
The Midnight Toll on HeroicThe March on Quel'DanasThose with a group on hand tonight or tomorrow

1,600 in rated PvP: the widest door, because the rating resets in two sessions

PvP rating doesn't accumulate over the whole season like Mythic+ rating does: it goes up and down match after match. A player capped around 1,400 doesn't need a month to pass 1,600, just two clean sessions.

Second advantage: two formats let you queue solo, without having to gather a group on a Monday night in August. Solo Shuffle and rated Blitz battlegrounds get you into the action immediately, and the criterion doesn't distinguish between formats: pick whichever you're most comfortable with. If you're coming back after a break, patch 12.1 added arenas against bots, in the same vein as the training grounds: you can knock the rust off your rotations there, but you won't earn any rating.

2,000 in Mythic+: a door to push only if you're already hovering just below it

Here, the mechanics work against you: Mythic+ rating accumulates over the entire season and across all dungeons, and it can't be caught up in two nights of keys. If you haven't pushed keys in weeks, this isn't your door, and the hours you spend on it will be stolen from your PvP push.

If you're just below the mark, the logic remains the same as for the full season: your weakest dungeons are the ones that pay off the most. Identify the two or three where your score is lowest and clear them with a group you know well.

Two clarifications: Gouffres and Repaires equip you but don't raise your rating, only keys count; and the Grand Coffre doesn't tick off any of the three doors.

Midnight's Toll: Heroic can be done in one evening, but the Raid Finder tool and Normal mode don't validate anything

Watch out for the mode trap: the criterion only counts Mythic and Heroic. A victory via the Raid Finder tool or in Normal mode won't tick anything off — these two modes are mentioned in the announcement, but for the cosmetic achievements.

Heroic remains within reach if you can find a group: after our August 15th checklist, which aimed for 273 ilvl ahead of the Venomous Abyss, your stats won't be the problem, recruitment will. Mythic, on the other hand, can't be farmed on demand — but keep reading, because it retains value after the season.

Luminous Presence doesn't disappear: this achievement will remain available after the season ends

The other confusion to clear up concerns the 2,500 Mythic+ threshold. This threshold doesn't belong to the Herald of the Dawn: it's one of the criteria for a separate achievement, Luminous Presence, which rewards the Glimmering Sunmote, additional visual effects on Season 1 class armor sets.

Here too, a single criterion is enough: Midnight's Toll on Mythic difficulty, a Mythic+ rating of at least 2,500, or Elite rank in Season 1 PvP — this third door is regularly overlooked even though many PvP players already have it. Above all, the announcement specifies that this achievement will remain available after the season ends, unlike defeating Midnight's Toll on Mythic difficulty.

Vidaeus, meanwhile, is truly leaving: three Delve achievements to complete before the switch

The announcement devotes an entire section to the seasonal nemesis, "Don't forget your Delves rewards before Season 2 begins," and its three achievements must be completed before the end of the season:

  • My Nemesis of the Shadow — defeat Vidaeus, for the Void-Ravaged Vidaeus;
  • Illumination of Darkness — for the the Sinister title;
  • Face-to-Face — fight him alone, for the Arcanovoid Construct mount.

We covered this fight in detail on July 28: it's the most rewarding undertaking after the Dawn Herald.

What else the announcement names, in French, that is also leaving

  • On the raid side, the feats of strength A Step Ahead and Fine Craftsmanship on the Dream rift, the Void Arrow, and the march on Quel'Danas, along with the silver, resplendent, and gold trophies of triumph.
  • On the PvP side, the entire rank ladder and its titles, the Vicious Snapper Lizard and Gladiator's Galactic Bloodwyrm mounts, the Legendary Galactic Pennant and the Galaxy weapon illusion, tied to the Rival II rank.
  • On the dungeon side, the rating tiers from 1,500 to 3,400, the teleportation achievements, the resilient keys for levels 12 through 30, the Convalescent Carrion, Calamitous Carrion, and Shadowy Ashes mounts, and the Saddle Lost in Time.
  • Myth of the Dawn (285 average item level), Hunting Big Game (complete the Hunt's reward track), and the Sephraliss temple achievements on Mythic: Snake Eyes, Snake Eater, Goodnight, Sweet Prince.

The order to follow for your last evenings

  1. Open your achievements panel first: many already have 1,600 or 2,000 without knowing it, and the Herald of the Dawn is then already earned.
  2. Choose a single path, not all three.
  3. If you're close to 2,000 in Mythic+, two or three well-chosen keys are the shortest route; otherwise, focus entirely on Rated PvP.
  4. If a Heroic group forms for the push on Quel'Danas, the matter is settled in one evening.
  5. Set aside time for Vidaeus, and none for Radiant Presence, which carries over into the season.

Then, the page turns: Season 2 on Tuesday, August 18 in North America, Wednesday, August 19 in Europe, with Mythic+ dungeons, Rated PvP, and the Venomous Abyss raid following close behind. Until then, one path to push through, and only one.

Which door will you go through for Herald of the Dawn before Wednesday?

Frequently asked questions

I'm at 1,550 rated PvP, do I have time to reach 1,600 before Wednesday?
Yes, it's very doable in two solid sessions. Rating rebuilds match after match, unlike Mythic+. Solo Shuffle or rated Blitz battlegrounds get you into games immediately without waiting for a group.
I'm just under 2,000 in Mythic+, should I push keys hard?
If you're really right at the edge, yes: identify the two or three dungeons where you have the lowest score and clear them with a stable group. If you're far from 2,000, switch to rated PvP instead, it's faster.
Does Midnight's Toll on normal via Raid Finder count for the achievement?
No, watch out for that trap. Only heroic and mythic count. Normal and Raid Finder give decorative trophies, not the Herald of the Dawn.
Does Luminous Presence also disappear with the season?
No, that's the other misconception to clear up. Luminous Presence remains available after the switch, notably via Midnight's Toll on mythic. Focus only on Herald of the Dawn this week.
I already have 2,500 rating in Mythic+, am I set for both achievements?
For Herald of the Dawn, yes, but Luminous Presence only requires 2,500 as one of three doors. You've probably already checked one off, so check your achievements panel first.

Key takeaways

  • Only one trial is required, so pick the cheapest one: 1,600 rated PvP is usually the fastest
  • PvP rating can be rebuilt in two solid sessions, unlike Mythic+ which accumulates over the whole season
  • Midnight's Toll on heroic can be done in one evening if you find a group, but Mythic and the Raid Finder don't count
  • Luminous Presence stays available after the season, so don't rush it if you're just under the bar
  • Vidaeus and its three achievements are truly disappearing: prioritize them before Wednesday's switch
