In brief

WoW Midnight's housing system revolutionizes your gameplay routine with customizable houses, Apartment Buildings arriving in July 2026, and Decorating Duels to complete before The Curse of Ula'tek. This guide gives you all the fundamentals to optimize your decorating, choose the right neighborhood, and secure exclusive rewards before the competitions close.

Since its introduction in World of Warcraft: Midnight, player housing has upended our routines: between two Gouffres with Valeera Sanguinar, an evening of Void Bolt or a Void Hunt session in Void Storm, we now rush off to make our Warband house pay off. On the eve of the Curse of Ula'tek update — which brings Apartments and marks the end of the Season 1 Decorating Duels — this guide will get you ready to make the most of it before the end of July 2026.

Housing arrives: basics, entry quest, and Warband

Once you log in after the Midnight launch, an auto-accepted quest chain leads you to a steward to hand over a thousand gold, choose a faction, and pick up your first house plan. The cost is symbolic, the process takes less than fifteen minutes, and above all, everything operates at the Warband level: your account can own two homes at once, one in the Horde district and one in the Alliance district, shared across all your characters, current and future.

This Warband-wide logic explains the absence of recurring upkeep fees, rent, or lotteries: Blizzard has committed to an open and permanent system, with no competitive time-gating, to put an end to the trauma of old-school MMO plot-claiming contests. You leave the raid, come home, decorate, then head back out to farm your Void Hunt — and nothing punishes you for taking two weeks off.

The housing dashboard, accessible from anywhere via a dedicated shortcut, centralizes instant teleportation with a fifteen-minute cooldown, district management, friend invitations, and tracking of monthly Contributions. It's the social equivalent of the Great Vault: something to check every week, or risk letting Community Coupons expire.

Choosing your district: public, private, guild

Each district is an instance with about fifty equivalent plots, with no "premium" spot or privileged exposure. Three formats coexist:

  • Public: automatic matchmaking with other players. Ideal for visiting, gathering inspiration, running into strangers decorating live, and voting in the Decorating Duels.
  • Private: invite-only. Perfect for a circle of friends, a Discord community, or a family. No faction restrictions: a night elf and an orc can perfectly well share the same cul-de-sac.
  • Guild: plots are reserved for guild members and come with a shared notice board — the 2026 version of the guild hall the community has been asking for for fifteen years.

You can move if you change your mind, but keep in mind that a lively district generates Contributions faster — and therefore more Community Coupons, the currency dedicated to decoration. In new, empty districts, progress drags: better to favor public districts if you're starting out alone, and switch to private later if you like.

Apartments: the format arriving with Curse of Ula'tek

The flagship announcement of late July is Apartment Buildings. Unlike standalone houses, these vertical buildings will offer apartment-style housing at the heart of major cities in Silvermoon and, a little later in Season 2, in Harandar. Blizzard is targeting three clearly identified uses:

  • An urban pied-à-terre for roleplayers, questers, and streamers who want the capital-city atmosphere rather than a suburban garden.
  • A more compact, modular format, quicker to fully decorate in order to complete achievements tied to total customization.
  • A springboard toward Falconwing Square, the pedestrian hub that will host upcoming seasonal Contributions and cosmetic vendors exclusive to the new update.

Technically, an Apartment Building counts as a third residence for your Warband, without replacing the faction houses already placed. Expect an entry fee in Undercoins and Dawn Coins (the exact amount will be revealed with Ula'tek's patch notes), plus an initial deposit of one thousand gold pieces, just like the starter house. In other words: start setting aside your Restored Cache Keys and your Void Marl now to fund the interior decor.

Interior decoration: rooms, kits, and Illusory Rooms

A house starts with a simple layout. It then grows with each favor level, unlocking new walls, partitions, staircases, and side rooms. Illusory Rooms are the system's most creative addition: these are extradimensional chambers attached to your layout, whose decor defies exterior geometry — a gnomish dungeon beneath a thatched roof is perfectly possible, as is a sunlit terrace inside a Silvermoon mansion plunged into permanent night.

On the exterior side, four themed kits are delivered with the first quest: Orc, Blood Elf, Human, and Night Elf. Each changes the roofing, windows, wall palette, and garden. Apartment Buildings will add an "urban high elf" variant specific to Silvermoon, with gilding, domes, and ironwork typical of Eversong Woods, as well as a more austere "warden" variant inspired by the ramparts of Quel'Danas.

Finally, most furniture is craftable or lootable: herbalists, alchemists, and jewelcrafters have each received their furniture recipes since patch 12.0.7, and Season 1's Gouffres regularly drop unique trophies to display — a bust of the defeated Vidaeus, a statue fragment chosen by the vendor Naleidea Ruissegemme, tapestries from the Void Hunt. Plenty to naturally fill your display cases during your weekly runs, with no additional decoration farming required.

Decorating Duels: the final stretch before the update

The Decorating Duels, launched in June 2026, are closing their doors with the arrival of Ula'tek. The concept: two players compete on a weekly theme (library, sanctuary, kitchen, winter garden, trophy room…), share a common furniture budget, each decorate their own room, and then submit to a community vote from their neighborhood over 48 hours.

The non-repeatable rewards to secure before the switch:

  • The title <Void Decorator>, obtained after five duels won.
  • A set of concept-art panels from the Stoneforge Sentinel, usable as wall paintings.
  • Three exclusive Illusory Rooms: the "Salon of the Aspects", the "Quel'Danas Terrace" and the "Naleidea Gemstream Library".
  • A Little Gargoyleling pet, to be displayed in the front garden of the house or Building.

You therefore have a few days left to line up wins and achievements. Focus on morning public duels (less competition, voters often more inclined to reward effort), favor color coherence over piling up items — the community values readability — and always offer a navigable room, with no collision blocking, and a clear focal point facing the front door.

Monthly Contributions, Community Coupons and Favor

Each neighborhood receives a monthly cycle of Contributions: cooperative quests accessible to all residents (planting a communal orchard, resupplying the barracks, restoring a fountain, escorting a guild master…). Completing them advances the neighborhood's Favor bar, which unlocks in cascade:

  1. Themed furniture sets (summer 2026: Zul'Aman festival, hand-painted troll furniture).
  2. A weekly stock of Community Coupons, to spend with the traveling cosmetics vendor who rotates between neighborhoods.
  3. Priority access to Ula'tek's new Contributions as soon as they open — valuable if you're aiming for the seasonal title before the October rotation.

The Community Coupons are shared across all characters on the Warband, so there's no point duplicating yourself across three rerolls: farm on your main. Expect around 40 minutes a week to maximize your share if you live alone in a low-activity neighborhood, versus 10 to 15 minutes in a very busy neighborhood where every resident chips away at a small portion of the collective work.

Stoneforge Sentinel: the mount to work into your garden

The Stoneforge Sentinel, available in the shop via Battle.net, is a fully customizable flying mount: over 300,000 combinations of textures, finishes and adornments, automatically shared across your entire Warband and matched to your account's fastest riding speed. It isn't a housing item as such, but the community has already repurposed its use:

  • Some players park it as a living statue in front of their house or future Building, leaving it in "idle" pose in a locked area of the garden.
  • Others match the mount's palette to Orc or Blood Elf kits to achieve full visual coherence between mount, façade and Decorating Duels livery.
  • The most ambitious decorators sync it with the Voidforged Assembly obtained in the Void's Arrow to create a matching mount "fleet" in front of the entrance.

It isn't a mandatory purchase, but if you're already planning to get it before BlizzCon 2026, you might as well coordinate its palette with your future Silvermoon high elf building. Same goes if you're aiming for the "hawk-wing" variant from the Hawk's Wing Plaza, whose official colors were revealed during the last WoWCast.

Checklist before the end of Midnight Season 1

Blizzard has confirmed that "the clock is ticking": Season 1 achievements and rewards will disappear with Ula'tek. Here's the optimal checklist to make sure you don't leave anything on the table on the housing and exploration side:

ObjectiveWhereKey reward
Complete a level 8 Gouffre across all 4 active zonesVoid Storm, Harandar, Quel'Danas, Zul'Aman"Champion of the Dawn" title + wall decor
Complete the seasonal Void HuntVoid StormTrophy for the entrance hall + Dawn Coins

Reach Favor 6 in a neighborhoodMonthly ContributionsComplete Zul'Aman festival furniture set
Clear out the Naleidea Gemstream vendorGouffre VestibuleDecorative curiosities — last rotation before patch

Players who haven't yet tackled Midnight on retail will find a complete starting rundown in our guide to getting started with the expansion; those still on the fence about the Haranir race can read our dedicated unlock article. Here, we assume your character is ready and that your priority, with just a few days left before Ula'tek, is to secure these cosmetic and social rewards before the patch.

Conclusion: three evenings to secure it all

In three well-planned sessions — one evening of level 8 Gouffres, one evening of Decorating Duels, and one mixed evening of the Void's Arrow raid plus Contributions — most active players can wrap up the bulk of Midnight Season 1's non-recurring rewards while calmly preparing for the arrival of Buildings. Mark the date of The Curse of Ula'tek on your calendar, set aside your Sub-Coins and your Dawn Coins, finish your faction plan: the second Season will start with fully functional housing, a coherent mount garden, and a home base ready to welcome the next vendors at the Hawk's Wing Plaza.

Which type of housing appeals to you most ahead of July 2026?

Frequently asked questions

How many houses can I own at the same time?
Three in total once Apartment Buildings arrive: a house in the Horde neighborhood, one in the Alliance neighborhood, and an apartment in an urban Apartment Building. All are shared across your characters at the Warband level.
Do I have to pay rent or upkeep costs?
No. Blizzard has committed to an open, permanent system with no recurring fees, no competitive time-gating, and no penalty if you step away for a few weeks. Only the optional Monthly Contributions generate bonus rewards.
What type of neighborhood should I choose when starting out?
Start with a public one if you're playing solo: automatic matchmaking guarantees you an active community, and you'll accumulate Monthly Contributions faster. You can switch to private or guild housing later if your friends join you.
What can Illusory Rooms actually do?
These are extradimensional rooms attached to your plot that defy geometry: you can have a gnome dungeon under a cottage roof or a sunlit terrace inside a manor stuck in permanent night.
Will I miss out on rewards if I don't take part in the Decorating Duels before the end of July?
Yes: the seasonal title, the concept art boards, the three exclusive Illusory Rooms, and the Baby Gargoyle mascot will disappear forever once the Duels close with Ula'tek.
