Minecraft Abandoned Camp: Copper Chest Location & Release Date
In brief
The abandoned camp in Minecraft 26.3 revolutionizes exploration: three distinct containers deliver strategic loot, including a secret oxidized copper chest hidden underground that guarantees diamonds, iron, and above all a map to a large structure. The real innovation is the self-feeding map chain — each camp leads to another, while the secret chests directly unlock the Woodland Mansion or the Ancient City without going through a cartographer.
Since Minecraft 26.3 snapshot 7, released on August 4, 2026, the abandoned camp has changed status. It used to be just a melancholy piece of scenery sitting in the middle of the woods: it's now the most profitable structure in the game for anyone who wants to explore. Every common chest in a camp yields a map to another camp, and every hidden chest guarantees a map to a major structure — including the Woodland Mansion and the Ancient City.
In other words, a single randomly found camp is enough to kick off a self-sustaining exploration loop. This is far from a cosmetic change: until this snapshot, getting your hands on a Woodland Mansion map meant leveling up a cartographer villager and buying the map from them with emeralds and a compass. Now, all it takes is looting a ruined campsite.
Update 26.3 hasn't been released yet: Mojang is targeting the third quarter of 2026, and everything below is only playable through Java Edition snapshots or the Bedrock Edition Preview. Here's the complete loot map, the method for not missing the hidden chest, and what this loop changes in survival mode.
What an abandoned camp is and where it spawns
The abandoned camp appeared in the first 26.3 snapshot, on June 23, 2026, a week after the release of Chaos Cubed (26.2). It's made up of two parts: a tent built from white wool stairs stretched over fences, and a campsite plot generated just in front of it, with an extinguished campfire and one or two containers.
The tent depends on the biome: ten models per biome. The campsite plot, meanwhile, is drawn from forty-five generic models plus four biome-specific models. That adds up to 8,820 unique configurations, which explains why no two camps ever look quite the same. The fences change wood type depending on location — a Pale Garden camp uses pale oak fences — and cobwebs sometimes replace the wool stairs to emphasize the dilapidated look.
The structure generates in eighteen surface biomes: Bamboo Jungle, Sparse Jungle, Forest, Birch Forest, Old Growth Birch Forest, Flower Forest, Windswept Forest, Mottled Forest, Cherry Grove, Pale Garden, Swamp, Meadow, Savanna, Taiga, Snowy Taiga, Old Growth Pine Taiga, Old Growth Spruce Taiga, and Wooded Badlands.
Spotting one visually is simple: look for a white, geometric patch at ground level, surrounded by dirt, gravel, and dirt path. In a Mottled Forest — 26.3's new autumnal biome, carpeted with red, orange, and yellow poplars — the contrast is striking. In a Snowy Taiga, on the other hand, the tent blends into the scenery: rely on the campfire and the fences, not the color.

The three containers and their exact loot
A camp holds up to three types of containers, with three distinct loot tables that are identical across all biomes.
The barrel: consumables and decoration
The barrel rolls four to eight times from a pool of fourteen equally weighted entries, then once from a small pool of three tools.
- Straw Bed (2 to 4), White Cushion (1 to 2) — the two decorative additions from snapshot 3, released on July 8, 2026.
- Bone (2 to 4), Coal (2 to 4), Rabbit Hide (1 to 4), Wheat (1 to 4).
- Arrow (1 to 3), Bread (1 to 3), Glass Bottle (1 to 3), Leather (1 to 3), White Candle (1 to 3).
- Bowl (1 to 2), String (1 to 2), Cobweb (1).
- One guaranteed drop from: Bag, Fishing Rod, Wooden Axe.
The Bag, which appears one time in three, deserves a mention: it's one of the rare spots in the game where you can obtain it without crafting.
The common chest: copper, saddle, and chain map
The wooden chest at the camp is the more interesting of the two visible containers. It rolls in three successive batches.
The first batch, four to six rolls, gives exploration gear: Compass, Blank Map, Flint and Steel, Saddle, Lead (1 to 3), Bag, Gunpowder (2 to 4), Arrow (×4), Bone (2 to 4), Glass Bottle (1 to 4), Leather (1 to 4), Rabbit Hide (1 to 4), White Candle (1 to 3), Fishing Rod, and Cobweb. Gunpowder is new in snapshot 7: it replaces firework rockets there.
The second batch gives exactly two items drawn from ten, all with equal weight: Copper Axe, Copper Sword, Copper Spear, Copper Chestplate, Copper Leggings, Copper Boots, Bow, Bucket, Shears, and Spyglass. Each item therefore has roughly a 19% chance of appearing in a given chest. For a player who's just landed in a fresh world, two free pieces of copper gear is nothing to scoff at.
The third batch is the real addition of snapshot 7: an abandoned camp map, guaranteed every time, drawn from eight possible destinations. We'll come back to that below.
The secret chest: diamond, iron, and a large structure
The third container is an oxidized copper chest, and it isn't always visible. It's the reason to search a camp all the way through.
| Batch | Rolls | Contents |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Exactly 2 | Diamond, Healing Potion, Leaping Potion, Night Vision Potion, Swiftness Potion |
| 2 | 4 to 6 | Copper Ingot (1 to 2), Gold Ingot (1 to 2), Iron Ingot, Blank Map |
| 3 | 0 or 1 | Iron Axe, Iron Boots, Iron Leggings, Iron Spear |
| 4 | Exactly 1 | An exploration map to a large structure |
Two numbers worth remembering. The first batch, with two rolls out of five equally likely entries, gives a 36% chance of getting at least one diamond — and the same probability for each of the four potions. The third batch produces an iron item one time in two, potentially including an Iron Spear, the Mounts of Mayhem weapon that strikes at a range of 4.5 blocks instead of 3.
Don't miss the oxidized copper chest
The secret chest is rare, and above all it's sometimes buried beneath one of the standard containers. A player in a hurry opens the barrel, empties the camp chest, and moves on — leaving behind the diamond, the iron, and the structure map.
The method that misses nothing comes down to three moves. Break every barrel and every chest once emptied, and check the block right underneath. Search the nooks of the tent, behind the straw bed and under the cushions, not just the containers in plain sight. Finally, clear the ground around the extinguished campfire: that's where most of the chests invisible from the surface tend to hide.

The map chain, the real novelty of snapshot 7
Snapshot 7 turned exploration maps into genuine distinct items, with their own texture, instead of simple filled maps that had just been renamed. However, they are unavailable in Creative mode, and their zoom-out function has been removed from both the crafting table and the cartography table.
The eight maps from the common chest each point to another abandoned camp, in one of these biomes: Bamboo Jungle, Birch Forest, Cherry Grove, Sparse Forest, Flower Forest, Pale Garden, Swamp and Windswept Forest. Since the common chest of the destination camp will in turn contain a map, the loop never ends.
The seven maps from the hidden chest target major structures: Ancient City, Woodland Mansion, Trial Chambers, Mineshaft, Desert Pyramid, Jungle Temple and Warm Ocean Ruins. Each one has a one-in-seven chance of appearing. These maps have also been added to the hidden chests of Trial Chambers, Jungle Temples and Swamp Huts.
This table is unbalanced, in the good sense of the term. A map to the Ancient City alone is worth hours of digging saved, and the one to the Woodland Mansion removes the dependency on the cartographer. Conversely, the Mineshaft and Warm Ocean Ruins maps are minor, as these structures are already easy to find. Out of seven draws, two are excellent, two are decent and three are filler.
Note: the French client does not yet publish final labels for these maps, which are still in development. The structure names mentioned above are, however, the game's official translations.
What the loop actually changes in survival mode
The abandoned camp precisely fills the mid-game gap. It doesn't provide diamond gear, but it does provide worn copper, crafted iron, two to three useful potions and, above all, cartographic information — the most time-costly resource in Minecraft.
For a fresh world, the most efficient sequence is therefore to not settle down too quickly. Find a first camp, loot it entirely, including the hidden chest, then follow the camp map from the common chest. Three or four chained camps are enough to gather a complete copper outfit, a stock of gunpowder, a saddle, a spyglass, several bags and, with a bit of luck, a map to the Ancient City to keep in reserve.
Be careful, however, not to overestimate the straw bed recovered from the barrels: it allows you to get through the night and reset the weather, but it is destroyed after a single use and does not set a respawn point. It's very easy to craft anyway, with three hay bales yielding four beds, and it has the advantage of simply breaking in the Nether and the End instead of exploding.
How to test all this today
On the Java Edition, open the official launcher, go to the installations tab, enable the display of test versions and create an installation on the most recent 26.3 snapshot. No experimental option needs to be checked: the Sparse Forest and abandoned camps are active by default. On Bedrock, you need to go through the Preview and enable the experimental pack for the third drop of 2026. In both cases, create a dedicated world: snapshots are not backward compatible.
It remains to be seen what Mojang will keep between now and the final version. The loot tables have already changed between snapshots 6 and 7, and there's no guarantee that all seven structure maps will remain in the secret chest. If the current balancing holds, the abandoned camp will become, come September, the first thing to look for in a new world — ahead of the village.
