Clair Obscur: Expedition 33: true ending and end-game guide
In brief
Act 3 of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 hides much more than the simple defeat of Renoir: two genuine alternate endings, hidden superbosses, essential side areas, and a dense end-game that changes completely depending on your choices. This guide details how to unlock all the post-game content without replaying the adventure from scratch.
You've just struck down the Paintress atop the Monolith and the Paintress's countdown now reads a meagre 32. Good news: the journey is far from over. Sandfall Interactive has packed Act 3 of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 with optional zones, superbosses and alternate endings that radically change the meaning of the adventure. Here's our complete guide to ticking every box before closing the map of Lumière.
Understanding the structure of Act 3
Once Renoir is defeated and the Monolith's barrier is broken, the game shifts into its Act 3 and throws the continent wide open. The art direction remains just as intoxicating, but the difficulty takes a significant leap: the Nevrons encountered on the World Map hit noticeably harder, several zones assume a minimum level of 70, and two superbosses await beyond level 90.
What the game doesn't explicitly tell you is that the point of no return is marked by the conversation with the faceless little boy in the streets of Lumière. An autosave triggers just before it: don't hesitate to keep it aside, it will let you see the second ending without redoing the whole adventure.
The two true endings: Verso or Maelle
Contrary to rumour, there is no secret ending hidden behind a 100% completion. Sandfall really did split the difference: the final choice pits Verso's vision against Maelle's, and each leads to a coherent, playable conclusion.
- Verso Ending — "A Life to Love": accessible by playing as Verso during the final duel, it closes the loop on the Dessendre family's grief and lets the Canvas fade away. It unlocks the Renoir costume for Verso.
- Maelle Ending — "A Life to Paint": accessible by playing as Maelle, it extends the existence of the Painters in a doomed but beautiful world. It unlocks the civilian outfits for Lune and Sciel.
Neither is presented as "the right one" by the developers. The French-speaking community nonetheless considers the Verso ending to be the conclusion closest to the narrative intent, while the Maelle ending plays more on tragic ambiguity. Our advice: pick the ending that matches your reading of the characters, then reload the autosave to watch the other epilogue.
Relationship quests, your absolute priority
The most important system in the end-game has no journal or marker: these are the relationship quests with your companions and with Esquie. Every camp, every zone crossed triggers new dialogue and raises an invisible meter. Once the maximum bond level is reached, a personal quest unlocks and permanently alters the character's abilities.
- Esquie — the final conversation at camp unlocks underwater diving, essential for reaching the Abyss.
- Lune — her quest concludes in the Sirène Dunes and grants two major weapons for the endgame.
- Sciel — her memories unlock additional status Pictos, useful against Simon and Clea.
- Monoco — completing his quest lets you finish filling out his mimicry palette and obtain his final Masks.
- Verso — his quest ends facing the Doppelganger, an optional mini-boss that hands out rare Pictos.
Systematically head back to camp between each zone. A missed dialogue can't always be recovered, and an incomplete relationship meter will cost you several cosmetic and gameplay rewards.
Side zones you shouldn't miss
Millenium lists about a dozen essential side zones. Here are the ones you absolutely must clear before facing the superbosses:
- The Golden Harvest — available very early, it contains the "Teamwork" and "Sudden Death" Pictos, two essential building blocks for Maelle Burn or Sciel Fortune builds.
- The Dark Shores — the best experience-farming zone in the game, it also houses the Cadavreso weapon for Verso.
- The Blazing Glacier — a white Nevron, several Pictos and an exclusive costume are hidden there.
- The Workshop — three separate entrances, a perfect chroma catalyst and the "At Death's Door" Picto.
- The Floating Casino — mini-games, bonus outfits and a white Nevron.
- The Sanctuary of Eternal Night — the densest lore on the Writers and the origin of the Gommage.
- The Eternal Tower — 33 consecutive waves, one per floor, with Nevron costumes as rewards.
- The Aspirant — Alicia's personal quest, on the optional peak The Reacher, north of the Crows and west of the Isle of Faces.
Each zone rewards you with Expedition Journals left behind by previous teams. Collecting all of them isn't mandatory, but journals 46, 33, and especially Simon's, complete the narrative thread in spectacular fashion.
White Nevrons and Blanche
The white Nevrons are those peaceful creatures, lighter and more cotton-like in design, scattered across the whole map. They appear in a number of nine, and each one offers you a small quest: bring back an item, kill a specific enemy, clear an obstacle. By finding them all, you unlock the encounter with Blanche, a pacifist guardian who offers one of the most sought-after outfits in the game and a trophy required for 100% completion.
These creatures are easy to miss: they're often found behind destructible scenery, high up a cliff or tucked in a corner of the optional zones. Our tip: systematically explore each new map of Act 3 before advancing the main story.
Simon and the Abyss: the true final boss
The duel against Simon is presented outright as the pinnacle of the game, hailed by the French press as "the true final boss of Expedition 33". He awaits in the Abyss, a secret dungeon hidden beneath the Renoir Sketches.
- Prerequisites — reach relationship level 6 with Esquie to unlock underwater diving, then reach the aquatic portal between the Isle of Faces and the Isle of the Siren (the two Axon islands).
- Recommendations — level 90-95 on Story, 99 on Expert, weapons maxed at level 33, critical damage Pictos and a full AP gauge.
- Phase 1 — Simon chains sword strikes and punches; this is your dodge training.
- Phase 2 — ghost blades duplicate every attack, up to twelve consecutive parries or dodges within a single combo.
- Phase 3 — at 33% HP, Simon automatically eliminates part of your team. Keep Maelle or Sciel in reserve to finish the job.
Victory unlocks Simoso, Verso's ultimate weapon, fifty Lumicolours, two perfect chroma catalysts, Simon's journal, and the "At Peace at Last" trophy. It's simply the hardest fight in the game.
Clea and the Suspended Manor
The game's second superboss, Clea, awaits at the top of the Suspended Manor, the zone that closes off the Dessendre family's storyline. The dungeon is itself a puzzle: four coloured paths, four guardian bosses.
- Green Path — Goblu, a plant guardian vulnerable to fire.
- Yellow Path — the Lampmaster, formidable at range.
- Blue Path — the three Bishops, a triangular fight that demands mobility.
- Red Path — the Duallist, a fast-paced fight focused on perfect parries.
Once the four crowns are collected, Clea opens her workshop to you. Expect to need level 80-90 and weapons at level 33 to hope to withstand her chained attacks. The reward is massive: 1,950,000 experience points, the "Clea's Vitality" Picto, a perfect chroma catalyst, three grand catalysts, the "Renewal" item, the "Clea" trophy and a Clea costume for a character of your choice.
Unlocking both endings without starting over
The question comes up on every French-speaking forum: can you see both endings without starting from scratch? The answer is yes, provided you plan ahead for the autosave. Here's how:
- Complete all the side content and defeat Simon and Clea before talking to the faceless boy in the streets of Lumière.
- Manually save in a dedicated slot upon arriving in the final district.
- Choose the first ending, watch the credits, then reload the autosave created just before the conversation.
- Select the second ending to complete both trophies and unlock all the related costumes.
Note that the game does not offer an official New Game+ at the time of writing: the free Verso Sketches / Thank You Update update added narrative content and costumes but no full replayability mode. A well-placed save therefore remains your best ally.
To go further
To deepen your 100% run, several French-speaking resources are now reference points on the game. The complete Millenium walkthrough lists all the white Nevrons, journals and hidden items. The French wiki on jeuxvideo.com offers a detailed timeline of the plot and Esquie's dialogue. Finally, Breakflip keeps an up-to-date tracker of the optimal builds for Simon and Clea.
On the community side, the r/ClairObscurExpedition33 subforum and Sandfall's official French-speaking Discord are brimming with experience reports on both endings and on Expert strategies. Finally, know that the Verso Sketches update continues to evolve: additions are expected throughout the year, including new Pictos and an arena mode centred on the Eternal Tower. Plenty to extend the journey alongside Expedition 33 a little longer.
