In brief

IGN France got to test an hour of Hellraiser Revival at Gamescom, at roughly the 60% progression mark of the game. The verdict: a horrifyingly well-crafted experience that blends old-school Resident Evil-style labyrinthine exploration, direct and bloody combat, and an oppressive psychological atmosphere. An ambitious game, but clearly not for everyone, especially given its ultra-explicit treatment of sex, BDSM, and torture.

A roughly one-hour demo on PC, positioned at around 60% of Hellraiser Revival's progression according to Saber Interactive. You play as a hero searching for his companion, held prisoner by Pinhead, alternating between present-day sequences and disturbing psychological flashbacks. IGN's dominant impression coming out of the session: it's disturbing, often in-your-face, and surprisingly well-crafted in its construction.

What works first is the exploration. We expected a linear horror FPS, but instead we clearly get an old-school Resident Evil-style structure: color-coded map, locked doors you reopen later, thorough searching to dig up ammo and weapons. Nothing revolutionary on paper, you might say, but it's a change from the classic horror corridor and really pushes you to examine every room, the journalist tells us.

The combat, meanwhile, hits hard: machete, shotgun, a simple feel that nonetheless seems to get the job done, and an already varied bestiary (masked fanatics, chained enemies, shooters). The Configuration - the cube stolen from Pinhead - isn't just a narrative gimmick: you use it to levitate sharp objects and hurl them, or move sections of wall while exploring. It integrates well into the gameplay, without being too gimmicky according to IGN.

The sound design is impressive too: moans, creaks, sudden silences after the chaos. It's this brutal contrast between carnage and calm that instills unease better than any in-your-face gore scene.

What's worrying, on the other hand: the demo was running on a high-end PC setup, so it's hard to judge the final rendering on consoles. And above all, this very in-your-face aesthetic (sex, S&M, explicit torture) clearly won't win everyone over, even among adult players used to the horror genre. The question of how well it holds up over time also remains open - one hour of gameplay, even dense, doesn't tell us whether the exploration/combat/puzzle loop holds up over the planned 8-10 hour total runtime.

Things are off to a good start if Saber Interactive keeps up this pace and this suggestion/exposition ambiguity all the way through, according to the IGN France journalist. For the exact release date, see our dedicated article.

Frequently asked questions

Is this really an FPS, or more of an exploration game?
Hellraiser Revival leans far more toward classic Resident Evil-style exploration than a linear horror FPS. It features puzzles, locked doors to reopen later, thorough searching to find ammo and weapons, and a labyrinthine structure. Combat is present but serves the broader exploration.
What is the Configuration used for in the game?
Far more than a simple story gadget, the Configuration allows you to levitate sharp objects to hurl at enemies, or move sections of wall while exploring. Its integration into the gameplay feels natural without becoming a flashy gimmick.
Does the game really hold up over an 8-10 hour runtime?
According to IGN, the question remains open. One hour of demo, however dense, isn't enough to confirm the exploration/combat/puzzle loop will hold up over the full length. It will all depend on Saber Interactive's ability to maintain the pace and that suggestion/exposition balance all the way through.
Is the game too gory for classic survival-horror fans?
Yes, clearly. The aesthetic doesn't try to soften things: sex, sadomasochism, and brutality are omnipresent in the setting, the bestiary, and the characters' behavior. It's deliberately explicit, not gratuitous, but it does push the genre's boundaries.

Key takeaways

  • The exploration/puzzle structure recalls classic Resident Evil titles far more than a typical linear FPS, with locked doors and a color-coded map
  • The Configuration, the cube stolen from Pinhead, serves for much more than narrative purposes: it's used to hurl sharp objects or move sections of wall during exploration
  • The sound design impresses with its brutal contrast between chaotic carnage and sudden silences, which builds unease more effectively than any straightforward gore
  • The game's ultra-explicit aesthetic (sex, BDSM, explicit torture) deliberately pushes boundaries and clearly won't appeal to every adult player
