In brief

The Dire Assault's Sinister mode in 3.1 requires 9 stars in Trial mode to unlock and offers no additional Polychrome, only cosmetic rewards via Inspection Certificates. The core of the challenge lies in mastering parries against Isomorph - Girtablullu, whose corruption barrier only breaks on direct contact.

Version 3.1 "Long Farewells" didn't just bring Rémielle and the game's anniversary: it grafted an extra floor onto the top of Deadly Assault, the Adversity mode. A single opponent instead of three, no Polychrome at stake, and a dry entry requirement: you need to have earned 9 stars in Standard Mode for the current season before you can access it.

It's also the only place in the game that hands out Inspection Permits, the currency of the new Exclusive Showcase added to the Association's Provisions shop. In other words: if you want Rémielle's exclusive action, the new frame, the graffiti trace or the emoticon added in 3.1, there's no way around it.

The calendar matters, because the unlock condition resets with every enemy rotation. The first rotation of 3.1 runs until August 12, 2026; the version itself ends on September 9, 2026. Here's how to open the mode, what it expects from you, and what it actually rewards.

What Adversity mode changes compared to classic Deadly Assault

Deadly Assault as we've known it since version 1.4 is played across three successive fights, with three different squads and a timer. Adversity mode breaks this format: a single boss, a single squad, a single score. The official name for this tier in the French client is indeed "mode Sinistre" — several French-language sites call it "mode Adversité," which is a machine translation of the English "Adversity Mode" and doesn't exist in-game.

The fight's distinctive trait lies in its difficulty curve: the opponent becomes more aggressive as its health bar drops. The end of the fight is therefore systematically the most dangerous part, the exact opposite of the habit built up in Shiyu Defense, where you often finish off a stunned, defenseless enemy.

On the rewards side, let's be clear: Adversity mode doesn't grant a single extra Polychrome. The official patch notes list a limited-time animated avatar, a title, a theme, and Inspection Permits, provided you reach the required score. Added to this are two sets of badges introduced in 3.1 and exclusive to this tier: "Deadly Assault: Purge" and "Deadly Assault: Annihilator."

Unlocking Adversity mode: the 9 stars of Standard Mode

The entry requirement is Standard Mode, meaning standard Deadly Assault. You need to collect the 9 stars of the current season there: three bosses, three stars each.

Stars are earned through performance point thresholds. The scale recorded by Icy Veins for season 3.1 is as follows:

  • Rank B: 6,000 points
  • Rank A: 14,000 points
  • Rank S: 20,000 points

A detail that matters for more modest accounts: Polychromes stop at the sixth star. Each of the first six grants 50, for a total of 300 Polychromes across the whole season; stars 7, 8 and 9 only pay out exchange currency. A player aiming purely for efficiency can therefore stop at six stars — unless they want to open Adversity mode, which requires all nine.

Good news on this front: 3.1 explicitly reduced enemy ATK at all HP thresholds in Deadly Assault: Standard Mode. Attempts where you'd lose an agent to an unread attack at the end of the fight go noticeably smoother than in 3.0. And once Adversity mode is unlocked, resetting a squad composition in Standard Mode doesn't close it back off: access remains granted for the season.

The three enemy rotations of version 3.1

The official notes announce three waves of opponents for Deadly Assault over the course of the version. Useful for planning ahead which squads to build:

PhasePeriodOpponents
Phase 1July 29 → August 12, 2026Girtablullu - Aberrant Marasma, Notorious - Dead End Butcher, Unknown Corruption Complex
Phase 2starting August 12, 2026Girtablullu - Aberrant Marasma, The Enslaved - Ye Shiyuan, Miasmic Priest
Phase 3final rotation, until September 9, 2026Dead End Butcher, Girtablullu, Primordial Nightmare - "the Creator"

Girtablullu appears in all three phases in one form or another: the time spent learning its combos is never wasted, and that's exactly the kind of effort the Sinister mode rewards.

Isomorphic - Girtablullu: it all comes down to the corruption barrier

This season's Sinister mode opponent is Isomorphic - Girtablullu, a brand-new variant added in 3.1 alongside the Infernal Revenant, the Ulidim, and the Metamorphosed - Hornet. Game8 classifies it as an Ether boss with no elemental weakness or resistance: no need to tinker with an attribute-focused squad, just bring out your best damage/support duo.

The core of the fight is its corruption barrier. It doesn't break from raw damage: it gets converted through parries. The attacks in question are marked with a golden X-shaped indicator, distinct from the usual cross-shaped marker — the game calls this Chain Parry in English, and we haven't found an open source confirming the exact wording used in the French client, so caution is warranted on this specific term. Compared to the standard Girtablullu, the Isomorphic variant chains these much more frequently, and often without a readable wind-up.

The sequence to know unfolds in three stages:

  • The three replicas: the boss burrows underground and summons three copies, each striking once in quick succession. You need to parry all three in a row, without dodging in between.
  • The exit projectile: it resurfaces and fires a projectile that cannot be parried. Dodge that one, then immediately follow up with a parry — each successful parry converts a portion of the barrier.
  • The platform volley: perched up high, it fires three large projectiles then dives down. All four attacks can be parried, and chaining the full sequence empties the barrier in one go.

The reflex that makes the difference: don't default to perfect dodging as your go-to response. Here, a teammate's assist at the right moment is worth more than repositioning, because it converts the barrier and boosts the score.

Where the performance points come from

Score isn't just about damage per second. According to Game8's breakdown, the performance bonuses in Sinister mode are distributed as follows:

  • 1,000 points per successful chained parry on the boss, up to three times
  • 500 points per active conversion performed on the minions
  • 1,500 points if the corruption barrier goes down within 25 seconds of activation

That's a cap of 5,000 performance points. That's considerable: missing all three parries against the boss means giving up half of the available bonus, which no damage rotation can make up for. In practical terms, it's better to delay your ultimate by a few seconds to stay available during the barrier window than to unleash it as soon as it's charged.

What Inspection Certificates are actually for

Version 3.1 opened an exclusive Showcase in the Association's Supplies shop. There, you can exchange Inspection Certificates for Remielle's exclusive action, a new frame and graffiti trace, as well as an emoticon. Nothing that boosts your combat power, then: this tier is a prestige and customization goal, not a source of progression.

The practical takeaway is simple. If your account is still struggling to clear six stars in Ridu Weekly mode, ignore Disaster mode and focus on the 300 polychromes. If you clear those without breaking a sweat, the remaining three stars unlock content that has the merit of being demanding without being a wall of stats: it's a test of reading the fight, not of gear level.

Making the most of the farming window from August 12 to 17

The August 12 rotation falls on the same day as the launch of "In-Depth Scouting - Triple Bounty", which runs until August 17, 2026 at 3:59 AM (server time). During this window, rewards from any Zone Patrol level are tripled, up to a limit of 2 boosted challenges per day, with the counter resetting at 4:00 AM server time. You must be Inter-Knot Level 21, have completed the reputation quest "The Proxy's Path I", and have unlocked Zone Patrol.

This is the best opportunity of the version to restock on Drive Discs before tackling phase 2. Version 3.1 also added the "Nimble Back, Sharp Claws" challenge to Zone Patrol, which grants access to the two new sets "Feathers of Judgment" and "Thorn Rose". Ten days of well-managed recycling are often worth more than an extra Amp Engine when it comes to breaking through a score threshold.

The priority order for the fortnight

If your playtime is limited before the end of the version, the hierarchy is fairly clear. First finish the six stars of Ridu Weekly mode before August 12: they're lost at rotation, and they're the only polychromes available. Then go for the last three if your squad can handle it, solely to unlock Disaster mode. Then switch to the tripled Zone Patrol between August 12 and 17, while phase 2 is being set up.

And don't forget the combat event "Click! Duel at the Summit!", open until August 24, 2026: its six themed levels reward polychromes and a Tuner for an investment far lower than that of Deadly Assault. In terms of hourly efficiency, it even comes out ahead.

Do you think requiring 9 stars to access Sinister mode's cosmetic content is excessive?

Frequently asked questions

How much Polychrome does Sinister mode actually give?
Zero. Polychrome rewards stop at the sixth star of Trial mode (50 each, 300 total). Stars 7, 8, and 9 only give exchange currency and grant access to Sinister mode without any additional Polychrome reward.
Is clearing Trial mode once enough to access Sinister mode?
No, you need to accumulate 9 stars within the same Trial mode rotation. With each new wave of enemies, the counter resets to zero and you have to climb back to 9 stars to regain access. Once access is obtained, it stays active for the entire season even if you change squads.
How do you break Isomorph - Girtablullu's corruption barrier?
Only by successfully landing the parries marked with a gold X. The three successive attacks, the exit projectile, and the four hits from the platform all need to be parried to convert the barrier. Each successful parry reduces its bar, and it disappears completely if all four attacks are parried within 25 seconds.
Is it really worth grinding Sinister mode for Inspection Certificates?
Only if you want Miyabi's exclusive action or the related cosmetics. No combat progression depends on it, it's a prestige and customization goal. If you're already struggling with 6 stars, skip this mode and take the 300 Polychrome instead.

Key takeaways

  • Unlocking it requires all 9 stars of the seasonal Trial mode, even though Polychrome rewards stop at 6 stars.
  • Isomorph - Girtablullu strengthens its parries and combos compared to the classic Girtablullu, forcing constant reads.
  • Inspection Certificates only serve to unlock Miyabi's exclusive action and cosmetics, zero combat progression.
  • The boss's three consecutive parries alone are worth 3,000 performance points out of the maximum 5,000 available.
  • Version 3.1 reduced enemy attack power in Trial mode, making the climb to 9 stars less punishing than in 3.0.
