WoW Midnight: preparation guide for patch 12.1 "The Curse of Ula'tek" — Annelée Isle, Venomous Abyss and Season 2 on August 19
In brief
Patch 12.1 "Ula'tek's Curse" arrives on August 12, followed by Season 2 on August 19: you have a crucial week to explore the Ringed Isle, unlock the Altar of Corrosion, and discover the three dungeons from older expansions before the gear race speeds up. Between the new Vault of the Fallen raid (8 bosses), the solo-accessible Tidebound Grotto, and an enriched Mythic+ rotation, this patch marks a turning point for every type of player.
Patch 12.1 "The Curse of Ula'tek" arrives on August 12, 2026 in Europe (August 11 in North America), and Midnight Season 2 follows a week later, on August 19. So you have about a week to prepare the ground — and this time, this gap between the content and the season isn't trivial: it gives you seven days to unlock and explore an entire zone before the gear race begins.
This guide takes stock of what's coming, and above all of what's worth doing now, before August 12.
Annelée Isle: a new zone off the coast of Zul'Aman
The heart of the patch is Annelée Isle, a brand-new zone located off the coast of Zul'Aman. The campaign continues its narrative thread there: Zul'jarra follows the trail of Zul'jan, in a setting steeped in troll mythology and serpentine magic.
The zone isn't just a backdrop for quests. It weaves together several systems that will shape your weekly routine.
The Vaults of Atal'Utek
This is the patch's most interesting mechanic, because it relies on a server-wide collective system. You earn rewards by taking part in group content and rotating public events. But once cumulative participation reaches a certain threshold on the server, all players together unlock a boss encounter.
In other words, your individual farming feeds a shared meter. That's a good reason to log in early on the first weekend: thresholds fall all the faster the more active the population is, and the players present at the moment of unlocking are the ones who benefit immediately.
The Serpent Miasma and the Altar of Corrosion
Annelée Isle is covered by a toxic serpent miasma that makes certain parts of the zone hostile. To resist it, you need to activate the zone's dedicated talent tree, the Altar of Corrosion.
Practical advice: this is your top priority on launch day. As long as this tree isn't engaged, part of the content is closed off or painful. Don't put this step off to rush into the quests — you'll come back to it anyway.
The Curse Waves and cursed fishing
Five locations in the zone see elite enemies appear on a rotation. Defeating them unlocks cursed fishing, a side activity specific to the island.
Cursed fishing is typically the kind of content that players in a hurry ignore in the first week and regret in the third, once the associated rewards become relevant. Scout out all five locations right from the start.
The Venomous Abyss: the eight-boss raid
The new raid is called the Venomous Abyss and features eight encounters, with Ula'tek as the final boss. Defeating him grants an exclusive mount.
The path notably goes through Nek'zali the Soulcoiler, the Entombed Sentinels, the Lost Explorers, Vashnik the Malignant, Sszorak, the Twin Fangs and the Coiled Altar. We're deliberately keeping the English names here: Blizzard has not yet published the final localized names for these encounters, and we'd rather not have you memorize an in-house translation that won't match your client. We'll update this list as soon as the localized version is published.
Two changes to know about the raid's economy:
- Bonus tokens go from two to one per week. You'll have half as many rerolls, so think carefully about which boss you spend them on.
- Item trading becomes free starting from week eight. This is a quality-of-life measure for the end of the season, but it also means the early weeks will remain restrictive when it comes to redistributing loot within a group.
The Altar of Hooks and the Season 2 Mythic+ rotation
The new dungeon, the Altar of Hooks, features three bosses: Rav'i, Writhing Coil and Zul'jan — again, the two missing localized names will be clarified at release. It's accessible starting August 12, but only enters Mythic+ on August 19, with the start of Season 2.
The Season 2 Mythic+ rotation includes eight dungeons:
- The Altar of Hooks (new)
- Murder Row
- Nalorakk's Den
- Blinding Vale
- The Void Scar Arena
- The Rest of Kings (Battle for Azeroth)
- The Temple of Sethraliss (Battle for Azeroth)
- The Ruby Life Pools (Dragonflight)
To do right now: if you've never set foot in the Rest of Kings, the Temple of Sethraliss, or the Ruby Life Pools, go run them on normal mode this week. These are three dungeons from older expansions, and figuring out their layout on the fly in a Mythic 8 key with an impatient group is the best way to ruin your first evenings of the season. An hour of scouting now is worth several saved keys later.
Season 2's Delves
A new Delve, referred to for now by its English name Tidebound Grotto, opens with the patch and is played at large scale. The announced principle is notable: each Delve offers a variant of an existing world boss, with rewards aligned with raid loot.
For players who prefer solo play or small groups, this is probably the patch's most important addition: it means it becomes possible to obtain raid-level gear without going through a raid. Existing Delves are also getting narrative variants themed around serpents and venom.
What's changing on the character side
- New tier sets are arriving for all classes.
- The weekly cap of the hunting system (Prey) goes from 10 to 15, which mechanically increases your progression per week.
- The associated quests grant a new reward in Season 2, referred to in English as Corrosive Souls.
- Housing gets its maximum level raised and gains new decoration categories: vines, hanging plants, and pet beds.
Your checklist before August 12
Concretely, here's what's worth doing this week:
- Scout the three dungeons from older expansions in the Mythic+ rotation. This is by far the best return on time invested.
- Clear out your bags and bank of outdated Season 1 materials — space will run out quickly once Annelée Isle opens.
- Finish your ongoing hunting quests, before the cap changes and seasonal objectives shift.
- Don't overinvest in your current gear. A week away from Season 2, spending your rare materials for two item levels that will be obsolete by August 19 makes no sense.
- If housing interests you, set aside the necessary gold: the raised maximum level logically comes with new costs.
The one-week gap between the patch and the season is your ally. Use it to explore Annelée Isle, unlock the Altar of Corrosion, and advance the campaign without pressure — because starting August 19, every evening will count in the gear race.

- Activate the Altar of Corrosion on day one — it's your key to accessing a large part of the zone's content.
- The three BfA and Dragonflight dungeons in the Mythic+ rotation (Rise of the Kings, Temple of Sethraliss, Ruby Life Pools) should be explored on Normal mode this week to avoid disasters in Mythic+ 8 keys.

- This week before Season 2 should be spent on exploration and optimization, not on upgrading gear that will be obsolete in three days.
