Sims 4 skills: the guide to reaching level 10 fast

In The Sims 4, every interaction, every book skimmed, every burnt meal feeds a progress bar. Skills form the backbone of your gameplay: they gate access to careers, aspirations, new objects and advanced social interactions. Since the game launched in 2014, EA and Maxis have expanded this system to over fifty skills, but fifteen of them remain the core of the base game. Here's how to map them out and, above all, how to max them out without burning through three Sims seasons in the process.

How skills work in The Sims 4

Each major skill progresses from 1 to 10. Each level unlocks new interactions, new recipes, new objects or new career rewards. Minor skills (such as those for toddlers or children) generally cap at 5 levels, sometimes 3. Three levers speed up progression: the Sim's mood, their personality traits and the quality of the objects used.

An inspired Sim paints faster, a focused Sim writes code faster, an energized Sim builds muscle faster. Choosing the right mood before starting to work on a skill can literally cut the learning time in half.

The base game offers 15 major skills, split into four main families: mental, creative, physical and social. Expansion packs add their own gauges (Wine Tasting, Robotics, Rock Climbing, Singing, Media, etc.), but they all follow the same mechanic.

Mental skills: Logic, Programming, Charisma

Six skills make up this family: Charisma, Logic, Programming, Video Gaming, Mischief and, if you own the relevant expansion, Diplomacy. These are career pillars, especially for the Writer, Business, Tech Guru and Politician career tracks.

• Charisma: built up in front of a mirror (the "Practice Speech" interaction) and above all through conversation. The Outgoing trait and the Confident mood boost progress.
• Logic: the chess set is your best ally, followed by the telescope and microscope. The Focused mood is essential, often gained through a good cup of coffee or a quiet environment.
• Programming: only on the computer, the dedicated tab appears as soon as a Sim takes an interest in it. A high-end computer noticeably speeds up progress.
• Video Gaming: built up on console or PC. Contrary to what you might think, playing online earns more than solo mode.
• Mischief: a half-serious, half-comedic skill, it grows through prankster interactions and joy buzzer handshakes. Ideal for devious Sims.

Creative skills: Cooking, Painting, Music

This is probably the richest family in the base game. It includes Cooking, Gourmet Cooking, Writing, Painting, Photography, the three music skills (Guitar, Piano, Violin) and, with the relevant kits, Flower Arranging. All these skills share one trait: they love the Inspired mood.

To get the Inspired mood on demand, a meditative shower, browsing artwork on the computer, or a visit to the museum will do the trick. The Creative trait also provides a random source of inspiration that makes everything easier.

The Cooking skill is often players' first goal, since it determines the household's survival. It simply levels up by preparing meals, but it climbs twice as fast if your Sim reads books purchased through the household's bookshelf. From level 3 onward, they can chat about cooking with other Sims to gain extra experience. Gourmet Cooking, for its part, requires an already experienced cook and a high-end oven.

Painting and Writing share the same duo of the Inspired mood and a quality object (easel or computer). Paintings created at maximum mood have a much better market value. On the music side, Guitar, Piano, and Violin are worked on separately: each instrument has its own progress bar.

Physical and social skills: Fitness, Fishing, Handiness

This category covers Fitness, Fishing, Gardening, Handiness, and Comedy. What do they have in common? They generally require a dedicated space or object.

• Fitness: treadmill, dumbbells, punching bag, swimming. The best boost comes from an Invigorating Shower, which grants the Energized mood. Varying exercises avoids the "Bored" penalty.
• Fishing: practiced at the bodies of water found across the worlds. The skill rises slowly, but pays off big once mastered: rare fish, fishkeeping, high-end cooking.
• Gardening: planting, watering, weeding, grafting. Grafting requires level 5 but allows you to multiply harvests of rare plants like death flowers.
• Handiness: repairing broken appliances and upgrading existing objects. A skilled handy Sim avoids steep bills and gains extra comfort.
• Comedy: practiced with a microphone in front of an audience or by telling jokes. Useful for the Entertainer career and social aspirations.

Child and toddler skills

Toddlers have five specific skill bars: Communication, Imagination, Movement, Thinking (capped at 5 levels) and Potty (capped at 3 levels). Each one is tied to a favorite emotional state: a happy toddler learns Communication and Thinking faster, a playful toddler boosts their Imagination, and an energized toddler works on their Movement.

Toddlers learn twice as fast when an older Sim teaches them something. Taking the time to read, tell stories, and play with an adult radically transforms their future prospects.

Reaching level 3 or higher in a toddler skill unlocks a bonus personality trait when they age up to child. Children, meanwhile, develop four skills: Motor, Creativity, Social, and Mental. These are respectively cultivated on the playground, with a drawing table or activity table, by chatting with other children, and by reading or practicing children's chess.

Boosting progression: moods, traits, and objects

Three simple habits can multiply your learning speed:

1. Choose the right mood. Focused for Logic, Programming, Writing; Inspired for all creative skills; Energized for Fitness; Confident for Charisma.
2. Select a relevant trait. At Sim creation, Creative benefits artists, Genius benefits scientists, Active benefits athletes, Foodie benefits cooks, Art Lover benefits photographers.
3. Invest in good equipment. A high-end computer, a professional easel, or a home fitness treadmill each generate a discreet but genuine progress bonus.

Some packs add aspiration rewards like "Freezer Bunny's Big Brain" that permanently increase the learning speed of all skills. An investment worth considering early in the game.

Skill cheats: reach level 10 in one second

Want to save time? The cheat console (Ctrl + Shift + C on PC, four simultaneous triggers on console) lets you enter direct codes. First activate testingcheats true, then the following command:

stats.set_skill_level Major_XXX 10

Replace XXX with the internal English name of the skill: Major_Charisma, Major_Logic, Major_Painting, Major_HomestyleCooking, Major_GourmetCooking, Major_Bartending, Major_Fishing, Major_Gardening, Major_Guitar, Major_Piano, Major_Violin, Major_Handiness, Major_Mischief, Major_Programming, Major_VideoGaming, Major_Comedy, Major_Photography, Major_Writing. For children, use Skill_Child_Motor, Skill_Child_Creativity, Skill_Child_Social, or Skill_Child_Mental instead.

Watch out for capitalization and underscores: the slightest typo and the game will return a silent error. Copy and paste rather than typing by hand.
