In brief

The Unfinished Business quest at the X-18 lab is only available within a strict story window: after "The trail is getting hot" and before "A Minor Incident". Once past this point, no save file can reopen it. This guide explains how to check your playthrough's eligibility, pick up the contract from Diode, make your way through the lower floors with the code 2012, and above all how to maximize your rewards across the four possible endings.

On August 20, 2026, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl receives its Cost of Hope expansion and its 2.0 update. Until then, there's still free content to complete in the Zone, and it has an expiration date: the Unfinished Business mission, added on April 14 by the Sealed Truth content update, which reopens the lower levels of the X-18 lab.

Here's the catch: this mission isn't available permanently. It only triggers after completing the main quest "The Trail Is Getting Hot" and as long as you haven't started "A Minor Incident". GSC Game World spelled it out clearly in its announcement: once you cross that threshold, no save file reopens access. On a save that's already past that point, the only solution is to start a new campaign.

Here's how to check whether your save is still within the window, where to pick up the contract, what to bring with you underground, the sealed door code, and what each of the outcomes gets you.

Step zero: is your save still eligible?

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2's campaign has about thirty main quests. The two you need are fairly far apart in the story order, which leaves a comfortable margin — as long as you don't rush ahead.

  • "The Trail Is Getting Hot" comes in the first third of the story, right after "Return to the Waste Processing Station". This is the minimum threshold: until it's done, Diode has nothing to offer you.
  • "A Minor Incident" comes much later, right after "The Assault on Duga". This is the maximum threshold: as soon as you start it, the lab mission disappears from the playthrough for good.

In practice, open your PDA and check the quest log. If your current main objective falls between these two milestones — tracking down Strider, the back-and-forth trips to Malachite, the Red Forest, preparing for Duga — you're within range. If your marker is already pointing toward the mirror installation or toward Richter, it's too late for this playthrough.

A word of caution: make a dedicated manual save before starting the mission. It'll also let you compare the endings, more on that below.

Where to pick up the contract: Diode, at the Waste Processing Station

The starting point is the Waste Processing Station, the stalker hamlet planted in the middle of the Garbage zone. You've already set foot there during the campaign: that's where you find Diode, the local mechanic, the one who repairs and upgrades your gear.

Talk to him once "The Trail Is Getting Hot" is done. He didn't break through X-18's armored doors out of scientific curiosity: he wants what's sleeping down there, and he needs an escort who knows how to hold a rifle. The payout matches the risk.

Don't count on him to carry the fight. Diode opens the way, comments on things, and leaves you to handle everything that moves.

What to bring before heading down

X-18 is an enclosed, dark environment, saturated with electrical anomalies and populated by zombified soldiers. The worst opponent of the expedition is a Poltergeist, that invisible mutant which throws objects and hits you through walls — it's only vulnerable during the brief moments it materializes.

The minimum checklist before you press the button:

  • A high rate-of-fire weapon and plenty of ammo to feed it: the zombified come in waves through narrow corridors, and they can take a beating.
  • A backup shotgun for close-quarters fights in cramped rooms.
  • Double up on medkits and anti-radiation drugs: there's no trader underground, and heading back up isn't always an immediate option.
  • Room in your stash. The mission hands out a lot of sellable loot, and if you're aiming for the most profitable ending, you'll walk out with entire caches.
  • Repaired gear, plain and simple. Heading down with armor at 30% durability means losing half your radiation protection.

One detail that matters: keep your detector on you. X-18 is riddled with anomalous fields, and a Veles — the model sold for 9,000 coupons by the armorer at Yaniv station — also flags anomaly positions, not just artifacts.

Walkthrough, step by step

1. Head down to the lower level

Follow Diode to the laboratory entrance and search the surroundings: you'll find a recording of a conversation between him and Nestor, which sets up the context for the operation. Then look for the passage to the lower floor. On a stalker's body lies a PDA containing a basement map: read it, it'll save you from wandering in circles.

2. The key, then the power cut

From the elevator hall, make your way to the room where the stalker guarding the area is camped out. Once the path is clear, use the control panel to cut the power — that's what neutralizes the electric barrier — then grab the key from the room's safe.

It's in this same room that the sealed code door appears, the one that actually leads into X-18. Note it, you'll be back.

3. The door code: 2012

Good news, the code isn't randomly generated: it's 2012 in every playthrough. The game reveals it to you piece by piece, painted in blood on the walls and filled in by PDAs picked up along the way.

  • The 2 and the 1 are found in the area plunged into darkness, accessible once the electric barrier is deactivated — one marked on a wall, the other near a door, by a pillar.
  • The last two digits, 20, are written on a wall in a room reached by crossing a network of pipes, after closing a valve and clearing the area.

You can obviously enter 2012 straight away, but searching the PDAs along the way remains worthwhile: they tell the story of what happened here, and X-18's lore is the best argument for this update.

4. Professor Mikheyev and getting the power back on

Behind the door awaits Professor Mikheyev, a scientist who never left the facility. The conversation unlocks what comes next: you need to restart the laboratory's power circuit. The path runs through a ventilation shaft that leads to the control room, where a red button gets everything running again.

With the power back on, the place wakes up: zombified soldiers in numbers, and the Poltergeist. Hold a position with a wall at your back, let them funnel in through a chokepoint, and reload whenever you get a second. Assistant Kovalenko's PDA, picked up along the way, rounds out the file.

The transmitter: four outcomes, four payouts

Everything hinges on the final exchange with Mikheyev, around the transmitter from his research. This is where the manual save really pays off: the reward gaps are massive, and nothing tells you in advance what each line of dialogue triggers.

According to figures published by Game8, which mapped out the mission's branches, here's what each decision nets you:

Final decisionWhat you get
Hand the transmitter over to Diode15,000 coupons
Confront Mikheyev and spare him11,000 coupons
Confront Mikheyev then kill him26,000 coupons and access to Lukash's stashes
Take the transmitter and kill MikheyevLukash's stashes: an Integral-A, an RNBW scope, and coupons
Leave the transmitter with MikheyevNothing

The takeaway is simple: the most lucrative branch is the one where you confront the scientist before settling the matter, because it stacks the coupon payout with the contents of the stashes. The question is whether you play Skif as a mercenary or as a stalker who sleeps at night — the Zone doesn't judge, but your coupons do.

Bonus, outside the mission: by inspecting the concrete slabs in Mikheyev's area, you stumble on a second code, 2865, which opens a secured room. It's not part of any objective, which is exactly why many players walked out of X-18 without ever opening it.

Why do it this week rather than after August 20

Three reasons, and none of them are sentimental.

First, mods. GSC had already recommended disabling modifications before installing Sealed Truth. The August 20 2.0 update goes much further, since it moves the game from Unreal Engine 5.1 to a significantly newer version of the engine: part of the mod ecosystem won't survive the change, and a scripted underground mission is exactly the kind of content that breaks first. Doing Unfinished Business now, on a known and stable build, means avoiding an emergency reinstall.

Then, your save. Many players plan to pick back up their ongoing playthrough on Cost of Hope's release day. If that save is still before "A Minor Incident", you have a window of a few days to avoid permanently losing access to the lab.

Finally, narrative coherence. Cost of Hope brings Skif back toward the Chornobyl power plant and the Iron Forest, against a backdrop of renewed tensions between Duty and Freedom. X-18's archives, meanwhile, go back to the experiments that made the Zone what it is today. Doing both in order gives the expansion a depth you won't get anymore once the mission is locked.

The checklist before heading down

  • "The Trail Is Getting Hot" completed, "A Minor Incident" not started.
  • Dedicated manual save, kept until the final dialogue.
  • Armor and main weapon repaired, ammo in quantity, medkits and anti-radiation drugs doubled up.
  • Diode at the Waste Processing Station, in the Garbage zone.
  • Door code: 2012. Optional room code: 2865.
  • Don't confirm the final line without knowing what you want: the gap between the worst and best outcome exceeds 25,000 coupons.

If your save has already moved past the point of no return, there's no point forcing it: keep that save intact for August 20, and save Unfinished Business for your next campaign. It'll still be there, and you'll discover it on a freshly rebuilt engine.

Frequently asked questions

Can you redo Unfinished Business after starting "A Minor Incident"?
No. Once "A Minor Incident" has started, the quest disappears from your playthrough for good. The only fix is to restart an entire campaign if you missed it.
What is the code for the sealed door at X-18?
The code is 2012 in every playthrough. You discover it in pieces painted in blood on the walls and in PDAs you pick up: the 2 and the 1 in the electrical area, the 20 in the pipeworks.
Which ending is the most profitable?
Confronting Mikheyev and then killing him nets 26,000 coupons together with access to Lukash's stashes, making it far more lucrative than the other branches.
What happens if I go back down without cutting the power first?
The electrical barrier will block your access to the critical areas. You must first shut down the power supply via the control panel in order to progress.
Is fighting the Poltergeist mandatory?
Yes, it appears once Mikheyev asks you to restart the electrical circuit. Hold a defensive position with your back to a wall and let the enemies come through the chokepoint.

Key takeaways

  • The quest window is restricted: it disappears permanently as soon as you start "A Minor Incident".
  • The sealed door code is 2012 in every playthrough, discovered in fragments across the basements.
  • Four distinct endings yield between 0 and 26,000 coupons plus Lukash's stashes: confronting and then killing Mikheyev maximizes the loot.
  • Head down equipped with a fast-firing weapon, a shotgun, plenty of healing items, and a Veles detector to avoid anomalies.
  • Make a manual save before the quest to compare the endings without having to restart an entire campaign.
