In brief

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2's 2.0 update, "Back to the Zone," fixes 51 mission bugs, 13 of which outright blocked progression. Among the most serious: A Big Score, Shift Change (six fixes on its own), A Minor Incident, which also locked out Cost of Hope, and Unfinished Business at the X-18 laboratory. Previous saves remain compatible.

It's neither the switch to Unreal Engine 5.5.4 nor the four brand-new weapons that take up the most space in the patch notes for Update 2.0 "Back to the Zone" of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl, published online on Thursday, August 20, 2026 alongside the update itself — free, on PC, Xbox Series X|S and PS5. It's the list of fixed missions.

We went through it line by line. Of the "over 500 bug fixes" announced by GSC Game World, the Missions section alone lists 51, and 30 quests are named specifically if you add in the Main & Side Quests, Open World Encounters section. Thirteen of them had an issue that flat-out prevented players from completing them.

Here's which ones, what was blocking them, and what you need to reopen if you're resuming a save left hanging. One reassuring point right off the bat: all previous saves remain compatible, GSC confirmed this on August 19. No new playthrough is needed to benefit from these fixes.

Why the quest titles remain in English in this article

A clarification is in order, since it shapes everything that follows: no French patch notes exist. The address stalker2.com/fr may well be online, but it's just a translated shell. The API that feeds the studio's news only accepts two locales, en and uk; a request in fr returns zero articles. No official French wording therefore exists for the mission titles quoted below, and we reproduce them exactly as GSC writes them, without making up an in-house translation. If your journal displays something different, it is indeed the same quest.

The client itself is translated: the French Steam achievements list just went from 58 to 76 entries with the expansion, and it attests to the spelling "la Liberté" for Freedom and "le Devoir" for Duty. However, it contains no mission titles from the base game. One detail buried in the Other changes section is of particular interest to French speakers: 2.0 fixes several French localization issues in PDA notes and adds the missing images for several missions in the journal.

The 13 quests that couldn't be completed

Here are the progression blockers that the notes declare resolved, along with the circumstance described by the studio.

MissionWhat was blocking progress before 2.0
A Big ScoreImpossible to complete under certain circumstances, and if Akopyan died during the shootout with the bandits; missing quest marker
Shift ChangePlayer stuck in the radio room; game blocked after loading a save made in the elevator
A Minor IncidentObjectives could not be validated; the Chimera could be killed by A-Life NPCs
The Assault On The DugaMission impossible to complete
Dark as DungeonCancelled immediately
The Side HustleRemained active, with no way to complete it
All That Is LeftProgression lock under certain circumstances
Black Sheep"Kill the Zombies" step blocked; Blizzard non-interactive
The Last StepPlayer stuck at the Generators level; persistent portal sound
The Key To FreedomAll captives ended up dead
The Sound Of MusicSledgehammer became hostile and invulnerable
Down BelowSpark troops failed to spawn
Escape From The CageDalin remained stuck

Three lines concern A Big Score, making it the most patched-up mission of the bunch alongside Shift Change. Separately, Once More Unto The Breach receives "several performance fixes": it wasn't blocked, but another flaw was spoiling it.

Shift Change: six fixes for a single mission

No other quest is mentioned as often. Shift Change accounts for six separate entries:

  • player stuck in the radio room;
  • game blocked after loading a save made in the elevator;
  • the Emitter impossible to retrieve from the chest;
  • reward granted when it shouldn't have been;
  • audio issues during the mission;
  • Burers respawning in a loop near the Waste Processing Station once the mission was completed.

The fourth point is the most insidious: a reward granted by mistake makes it seem like the mission is complete when the follow-up doesn't actually trigger.

Two quests to reopen as a priority

Two missions deserve a separate breakdown, for different reasons.

A Minor Incident: the lock that also closed off half of Cost of Hope

A Minor Incident receives two fixes: the objectives wouldn't validate, and the Chimera could be killed by A-Life NPCs before the player could, which prevented the mission from being completed.

Yet this is precisely the mission that serves as the gateway to the second part of Cost of Hope, as we detailed in our guide to starting the expansion. A player whose campaign got stuck on it didn't just have a broken quest: they had half the expansion out of reach. The August 20 patch reopens both at once.

Unfinished Business: the "Use the code 2012" step would no longer close out

We had devoted an entire guide to this X-18 laboratory mission on August 10. The 2.0 notes confirm two long-standing reported flaws: the "Use the code 2012" step remained active when the code had been entered while it was still only partially discovered, and zombies would spawn directly in front of the player during the mission. The first one penalized the best-informed players. The laboratory receives other fixes along the way: elevator, outdoor sounds audible from the basement, level art and level design touch-ups.

NPCs that were missing, silent, or died too soon

Second category, the most extensive: characters that didn't do what the script expected of them.

  • Hot On The Trail: Jumper was absent, and the weather remained frozen after the end of the mission.
  • On The Edge: Hamster and Ricochet could die instantly right at the start of the Monolith's assault, and Gaffer responded with generic topics.
  • Down Below: misplaced NPCs, and skipping dialogues too quickly during a broadcast teleported the player to the Mirage.
  • In Search of a Guide: if Trapper died, his body marker did not display. Three Captains: mercenaries remained hidden behind a wall.
  • Dark Times: NPCs refused to talk to the player. Wishful Thinking: NPCs teleported.
  • Lex the Legend could be invisible, or respond with a "busy" topic instead of his scripted dialogue — same symptom for the Scoutmaster if the player had killed the blind dogs before arriving at the location.

Side objectives that refused to validate

  • In the Name of Science: Bayun's necklace could not be retrieved at the boat house.
  • The objective "Get rid of the threats in the Kazkovyi camp building" would not validate if the player had disarmed the traps before starting the mission.
  • Searching the Journalist's cache at the Clear Sky base could fail to count as a completed objective.
  • Honta: the mission would not progress if a broadcast occurred on the way to his house, and the reward for delivering mutant parts was not paid out.
  • The Boundary: Spirit's body disappeared from the tunnel after a reload; Trapper's and Chernozem's PDAs were mistyped.

Two blockers that outright prevented resuming

Outside of quests, two fixes affect the ability to resume play itself. The first: an infinite loading screen could occur when loading a save made at Zaton. A flaw that turns a break of a few months into a lost save.

The second: Deluxe and Ultimate edition missions launched inconsistently after a game version update. Two access locks are also fixed: the Icarus Hub could close permanently if the player accidentally injured the guard, and players could get stuck locked inside Dvupalov's hideout.

What to do before relaunching an old save

  1. Remove your mods. GSC recommends disabling them in case of performance or stability issues, and points to support.stalker2.com/hc.
  2. Don't start a new playthrough. Earlier saves are compatible, which is the point of the August 19 announcement.
  3. Open your journal and spot the stuck quests. A mission that stays active with no completable objective, a missing marker, a silent NPC: the three symptoms that come up most often in this list.
  4. Keep a save from before the block, if you have one. The studio doesn't state anywhere whether a fix applies retroactively to a playthrough where the lock has already closed. For a dead NPC or an item that's become impossible to pick up, the question genuinely matters.
  5. Report what's still broken to the technical support center, the channel GSC points to at the end of its notes.

One last marker: these fixes arrived yesterday, Thursday, August 20, 2026, alongside the paid expansion Cost of Hope. Update 2.0, meanwhile, costs nothing: the 51 mission fixes listed here are available to every owner of the game, regardless of edition.

You had a blocked mission in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 — will you reload your save or start a new game?

Frequently asked questions

My save was stuck on a mission in version 1.0 — do I need to start over from the beginning?
No. GSC confirmed on August 19 that all previous saves remain compatible with 2.0. Just load your save: the fix should unblock the broken quest, and you can carry on as normal.
Shift Change has six fixes — was it really the worst bug?
Yes, along with A Big Score. Shift Change was riddled with issues: players stuck in the radio room, saves locked in the elevator, rewards paid out incorrectly, and Burers looping endlessly after the ending. It's the most complex quest to repair.
I'm stuck on A Minor Incident — does that also stop me from playing Cost of Hope?
Exactly. A Minor Incident acts as the gateway to the second part of Cost of Hope. If you get stuck there, the entire expansion becomes inaccessible. 2.0 fixes both at once: just load your save and continue.
The quest titles stay in English — why not in French?
No official French patch notes exist. GSC only released its fixes in two locales (English and Ukrainian). French mission names only appear in Steam achievements ("la Liberté," "le Devoir"), but not in the base game.
I had an infinite loading screen at Zaton — is that fixed?
Yes. 2.0 patches the bug that caused a freeze when loading a save at Zaton. An essential fix that was costing players their progress.

Key takeaways

  • Thirteen missions were completely blocked before 2.0, preventing progress in the main campaign or the expansion
  • Shift Change racks up six separate fixes, making it the buggiest quest in the bunch
  • A Minor Incident also locked Cost of Hope: reopening one automatically unlocks the entire expansion
  • The sneakiest issues? Rewards paid out incorrectly, NPCs frozen in place, and steps that refused to trigger
  • All existing saves remain playable, with no need to restart from scratch
