In brief

Fishing arrives as early as your second night at Moonlight Peaks: earn your rod by beating Noel's challenge and start filling your purse. Between common fish like the Whisper and rare gems like the Armour (280 coins!), each species has its own spot and earning potential — explore Silverveil's lakes, the rivers and even the underground waters to maximize your profits.

Fishing arrives as early as your second night in Moonlight Peaks. No shop, no discreet tutorial: you have to earn your rod through sheer nerve, in a contest against an NPC. Good news - it's genuinely accessible, and rare fish pay out enough to get you out of a rough financial patch early in the game.

How to get the fishing rod

As early as your second night, cross the bridge to the right of your house, pass under the arch and head to the sandy beach. You'll find Noel there, who throws down a challenge: catch three different fish species before he does. If you win, he hands you 250 Coins. And best of all, he lets you keep the rod.

The challenge is generous: you have the whole night. Look for fish-shaped shadows on the water's surface, cast your line, wait for a bite, and reel it in. Three distinct species, and you're done. Once you've got your catches in hand, go back to see Noel at The Broken Lamp inn to settle the bet.

Fishing mechanics: what you need to know

No complicated mini-game here. You cast, you wait, and you reel in when it bites. The shadows beneath the surface show you exactly where to aim. One important tip, though: don't cast your bait directly into the school, the fish will scatter. Aim just next to it, then gently reel the line back to draw them in.

Note

If you're playing with a controller, a vibration signals the right moment to reel in your catch. On keyboard, just watch to make sure the fish has actually bitten before pressing. You'll also occasionally reel in junk - keep it, it sells!

All the fish, their locations and their values

Each fish has a base value and a base amount of energy. Both figures increase with the fish's star level. A Whisper with no stars is worth 40 Coins and gives 6 energy; at 1 star, it goes up to 50 Coins and 8 energy. The same logic applies to all species.

Fish Location Base Energy Base Value
Whisper Everywhere 6 40 Coins
Splotch Silverveil Lake 6 55 Coins
Mouthout Silverveil Lake 8 100 Coins
Orbis Silverveil Lake 8 75 Coins
Goldy Rivers near Silverveil - spring & summer only 8 50 Coins
Glibby Rivers near Silverveil 8 65 Coins
Violet Moonlit Pines rivers 8 65 Coins
Brickle Howling Marshes 8 80 Coins
Leftsee Underground waters 8 140 Coins
Armour Rose Grove 8 280 Coins

Priorities based on your progress

Right at the start of the game, the Whisper is your friend: it can be caught anywhere, no conditions attached. Ideal for filling your purse while you're still finding your bearings. But as soon as you gain access to Rose Grove, the Armour clearly becomes the most profitable catch in the game with its 280 base Coins. Almost seven times more than a Whisper.

The Leftsee is also worth the detour: 140 Coins for a fish hidden in underground waters is a solid effort-to-reward ratio once you know how to access it. And watch out for the Goldy - seasonal, available only in spring and summer near Silverveil. Miss the window, and you'll have to wait for the next season.

This guide will be updated as seasons pass and new content is added to Moonlight Peaks.

Early in the game, do you go for common fish first for cash or head straight for the rare spots?

Frequently asked questions

How exactly do you unlock fishing?
Head to the sandy beach on your second night (cross the bridge to the right of your house, pass under the arch). Noel challenges you there: catch three fish species before he does. You've got the whole night, and it's manageable. Once you've got all three catches, go confirm the bet at The Broken Lamp — you'll pocket 250 coins and, more importantly, the rod.
Which fish pays out the most?
The Armour at Pink Grove, with 280 coins base — nearly seven times more than a Whisper. The Leftsee in the underground waters also offers a good ratio at 140 coins, ideal once you've got access to that area.
Where can you find each fish species?
The Whisper anywhere with no conditions, the Splotch/Mouthout/Orbis at Silverveil Lake, the Goldy in the rivers near Silverveil (spring and summer only), the Glibby/Violet in the nearby rivers, the Brickle in the Howling Marshes, the Leftsee in the underground waters, and the Armour at Pink Grove.
Is the fishing mechanic complicated?
Not at all. Cast your line toward the fish-shaped shadows on the surface, wait for the bite, then reel in. On controller, a vibration signals the right moment; on keyboard, just check that the fish has bitten before pressing.
Why do the fish flee when I cast into them?
If you send the bait directly into the school, they'll bolt. Aim next to the school, then reel your line in slightly to draw them toward the hook — it works every time.

Key takeaways

  • You get the rod by winning a challenge against Noel: catching three different species before he does, which is honestly doable.
  • The Armour at Pink Grove pays out 280 coins base — seven times more than a Whisper, making it your long-term goal.
  • Don't cast directly into the school of fish, aim next to it and reel in slightly to draw them in without scaring them off.
  • The Goldy only bites in spring and summer near Silverveil — if you miss the window, wait for the next season.
  • The debris you reel in also sells, so keep everything your line brings back.
