In brief

Moonlight Peaks is built around mining: just two caves, but they unlock everything. This guide covers pickaxe progression (from Rusty to Gold), the complete mapping of the Cave of Echoes and the Crystal Cave, and above all the transformation chain that quadruples the value of your crystals via the Refiner, the Furnace, and the Enchanted Mortar.

In Moonlight Peaks, mining is the pillar that unlocks almost everything else: no Copper Bar, no upgraded tools; no Refined Stone, no machines; no Rose Quartz, no Glass for greenhouses and furniture. Little Chicken's game only has two mines, but they're enough to fill entire vampire nights — provided you know what to look for there, with which pickaxe, and above all what to do with the ore once it's back up on the surface.

This guide covers the game's two caves — the Cave of Echoes in Misty Shores and the Crystal Cave in Moonlit Pines —, the pickaxe progression that gates access to deposits, the full processing chain (Refiner, Furnace, Enchanted Mortar) and what to sell, gift, or keep. Useful note: Moonlight Peaks has no French version, so all the place names, items, and machines mentioned here are those from the game, in English.

The golden rule: the pickaxe decides everything

As with all tools in the game, the Pickaxe is upgraded at the Howling Hammer, Ridge's shop in town — open from 6 pm to midnight, vampire hours being what they are, and closed on the 15th of each season as well as on festival days. Each ore tier requires the previous pickaxe tier:

  • Rusty Pickaxe (starting tool): breaks stone and Copper Ore deposits;
  • Copper Pickaxe: unlocks Iron Ore deposits and blasts the boulder blocking the entrance to the Crystal Cave;
  • Iron Pickaxe: opens up Gold Ore, Rose Quartz, and Moon Crystal deposits;
  • Gold Pickaxe: the final tier, purely a matter of mining comfort.

Each upgrade costs 3 bars of the corresponding metal on top of coins (1,000 for copper, 4,000 for iron, 16,000 for gold) and consumes the tool from the previous tier. The loop is therefore deliberately circular: you mine copper to forge the pickaxe that will mine iron, which forges the one that will mine gold. There's no need to burn through your savings on the Gold Pickaxe too early: those 16,000 coins are far better invested in a farm building until you've exhausted what the Iron Pickaxe already allows you to do.

Cave of Echoes: the main mine in Misty Shores

The Cave of Echoes is located south of your farm, in the Misty Shores area, west of the Ambrosia Mansion. It's the game's "all-purpose" mine: you'll find plenty of Stone there, Copper Ore from the very first night, then Iron Ore with a Copper Pickaxe, and finally Gold Ore once you have the Iron Pickaxe in hand. Breaking deposits can also — rarely — unearth a Diamond, the mine's most lucrative find.

The cave isn't just rows of rocks: Vampsters and Soul Blobs live there, and several underground fishing spots let you catch species found nowhere else — Whisper, Leftsee, Skullfin, and above all the Missing, a very rare catch worth 750 coins at base quality. If you're heading down for a long session, bring the fishing rod along with the pickaxe: the two activities pair well on site.

Lost Moon Alcove: the mine's secret

The Cave of Echoes hides a secret area, the Lost Moon Alcove, tied to the main quest "A Missing Moon." Here you'll find the Purple Moonlight Flower, one of the collectible Vampsters, as well as the Moon Glimmer, a small creature that can be captured year-round. Without spoiling the quest: when the story mentions a missing moon, this is where it all happens. Keep this spot in mind and avoid selling your rare flowers before finishing this narrative thread.

Crystal Cave: Rose Quartz and Moon Crystal

The second mine is located in Moonlit Pines, near Fiona's house. Its entrance is blocked by a rock that only gives way to the Copper Pickaxe — but beware the trap: getting in isn't enough. The crystals inside require an Iron Pickaxe to be mined. Going there too early means making the trip for nothing, or almost nothing: an internal fishing spot can save the visit.

Two resources justify the detour:

  • Rose Quartz (20 coins): the game's "utility" crystal, the starting point of all Glass production;
  • Moon Crystal (75 coins): rarer, it sells for noticeably more and serves as a high-end gift.

This is also where a step of the main story takes place: Persephone asks you to bring back 6 Rose Quartz to purify her yoga space. This quest leads to the crafting of the Mana Extractor — one more reason not to reflexively sell your first crystals to the merchant.

From rock to riches: Refiner, Furnace and Enchanted Mortar

Raw ore is worth next to nothing. All the value of mining comes from three farm helpers to set up on your land.

The Refiner: stone first

Unlocked very early, the Refiner turns 6 Stone into 1 Refined Stone. Never sell your Stone: Refined Stone goes into crafting a large part of the game's machines, equipment and furniture — including the following two machines.

The Furnace: the heart of the chain

The Furnace blueprint is obtained from Ridge and is crafted at the Workbench with 15 Copper Ore and 5 Refined Stone. So plan on having about fifteen copper ores in reserve even before thinking about bars. Its recipes:

  • 1 Wood → 1 Charcoal (5 coins) — the fuel for all smelting;
  • 4 Copper Ore + 1 Charcoal → 1 Copper Bar (35 coins);
  • 4 Iron Ore + 1 Charcoal → 1 Iron Bar (35 coins);
  • 4 Gold Ore + 1 Charcoal → 1 Gold Bar (80 coins);
  • 2 Quartz Dust + 1 Charcoal → 1 Glass (80 coins).

The math is quick to do: 4 Copper Ore sold raw bring in 24 coins, the Copper Bar is worth 35 — and above all, it's the bar, never the ore, that Ridge and crafting recipes require. Smelt everything, systematically.

The Enchanted Mortar: from crystal to powder

Given by Luna during the "Need for Herbs" quest, the Enchanted Mortar is crafted at the Workbench with 5 Iron Bar and 10 Refined Stone. While it's mainly used to grind dried herbs for cooking and potions, it's also what turns — instantly — Rose Quartz into Quartz Dust (30 coins). Two Quartz Dust and one Charcoal put through the Furnace then yield a Glass worth 80 coins: the full chain quadruples the value of your crystals, and Glass remains essential for advanced buildings anyway.

Sell, gift or stockpile?

Three simple rules so you never regret a sale:

  • Priority items to stockpile: Stone, Refined Stone, Iron Bar, Glass, and Rose Quartz. These are the materials that show up most often in machine and furniture blueprints.
  • Best to give as gifts: Rose Quartz is Persephone's favorite gift, and it's also well liked by Sabrina, Mina, Jada, Noel, Evan, and Winston. Moon Crystal is Dragan's favorite gift and is liked by Rei. A crystal given to the right NPC earns more friendship points than its 20 or 75 coin sale price.
  • Best to sell: Diamonds found in the Cave of Echoes, surplus Moon Crystal once Dragan is covered, and any Glass produced beyond your building needs.

The miner's roadmap, step by step

To wrap up, here's the most efficient progression order if you're picking a save back up this weekend: mine Copper Ore at the Cave of Echoes from the very first nights, build the Refiner and then the Furnace (15 Copper Ore + 5 Refined Stone), smelt 3 Copper Bar for Ridge's Copper Pickaxe, then switch over to Iron Ore until you get the Iron Pickaxe. At that point, the Crystal Cave becomes your main destination: 6 Rose Quartz for Persephone, the rest turned into Quartz Dust to kick off Glass production, and Moon Crystal as a gift for Dragan. Gold Ore and its 16,000-coin pickaxe can wait until the farm runs itself — the mine, after all, isn't going anywhere, and its echoes have all the time in the world. Just like you.

Frequently asked questions

Do you really need to forge the Gold Pickaxe for 16,000 coins?
No, it's purely a convenience item. The Iron Pickaxe is enough to reach every important deposit; invest in your farm buildings instead while you wait.
What should you do with the 6 Rose Quartz that Persephone asks for?
Give them to her: this quest unlocks the Mana Extractor. Never sell your first crystals to the merchant out of reflex.
Raw Copper Ore or Copper Bar for selling?
Always the bar. 4 raw Copper Ore earn 24 coins, while 1 Copper Bar is worth 35, and it's the bar that every upgrade blueprint requires.
Can you explore the Crystal Cave with just the Copper Pickaxe?
You can enter, yes, but the crystals inside require the Iron Pickaxe to be mined. Going there too early means making the trip for nothing, unless you want to fish underground.
Should Stone be sold or stockpiled?
Definitely stockpile it. The Refiner devours 6 per Refined Stone, and the latter goes into almost every blueprint in the game — machines, furniture, walls.

Key takeaways

  • The pickaxe you own strictly determines what you can mine: every ore requires its own tool, and that's intentional.
  • Raw ore earns you next to nothing; real profit comes through the Furnace (a Copper Bar is worth 35 coins versus 24 for Copper Ore sold alone).
  • Rose Quartz and Moon Crystal can't be sold: the former feeds the Glass chain, while the latter, gifted to Dragan, earns more in friendship than in coins.
  • Lost Moon Alcove hides a secret area tied to the main quest; going there too early means spoiling the narrative discovery.
