Genshin Impact: “Heated Battle Mode: Tactical Formation” opens today — you don't play your own deck, and matchmaking requires Player Level 4
In brief
The hardcore "Tactical Formation" mode opens Saturday, August 29 and completely flips the script: you won't be playing your own deck here. Character cards are selected on the spot and action cards are randomized, making collection irrelevant. The only real gate is Player Level 4 for automatic matchmaking.
The Genius Invokation TCG relaunches its "Heated Battle Mode" today, Saturday, August 29, under the name "Tactical Formation." The special rule for this edition boils down to one sentence, and it flips the usual balance of power: you won't be playing your own deck.
An account that has never collected a single card thus starts on equal footing with a veteran. That's rare — especially since the entry lock hasn't budged an inch.
The special rule, word for word
HoYoverse phrases it this way in its official announcement:
In this edition of Heated Battle Mode, Travelers must use Character Cards selected on the spot and randomly generated Action Cards to do battle.
Two halves of a sentence, two distinct effects. The Character Cards selected on the spot mean your trio isn't prepared before the match: it's decided at the moment of play. The randomly generated Action Cards, meanwhile, purely and simply remove the deck-building phase.
Card farming therefore gives you no advantage here, and its absence doesn't penalize you either. No collection to pull out, no list to optimize the night before: this is the piece of TCG content from version 7.0 that's most indifferent to what you own.
One caveat, since the announcement stops there: HoYoverse doesn't specify which pool the Character Cards are drawn from, how many Action Cards are distributed, or whether there are difficulty tiers. Those details only live in the in-game panel.
A human opponent, and an invitation board
Second notable point: this mode is played against another player. The announcement describes two ways to enter a duel, and both go through someone else.
- Invite a teammate — the simplest route if someone on your friends list plays with cards.
- Matchmaking, open "after reaching Player Level 4."
Beware the wording trap, because the announcement uses both labels on the same page: Adventure Rank refers to your account, while Player Level is specific to the Genius Invokation TCG. A very advanced account can still be under Player Level 4 if it just unlocked the card game — and matchmaking will remain closed to it. HoYoverse doesn't say how this level is raised.
The starting point, however, is clearly named: the Invitation Board of The Cat's Tail, the tavern in Mondstadt. No new area to unlock, no back-and-forth trip to Snezhnaya.

The three entry requirements, as a reminder
They're identical to those for "The Forge Realm's Temper: Game of Wits," which we detailed on August 20. If you were able to open that event, you'll enter this one without doing anything more.
- Adventure Rank 32 or above.
- Archon Quest Prologue - Act III "Song of the Dragon and Freedom" completed.
- World Quest "Battlefield of Dice, Cats, and Cards" completed.
The third is the only one that really blocks progress. It's the introductory quest for the card game, it doesn't appear on any mandatory path, and nothing forces you to accept it — some very old accounts have never started it. That's the paradox of this event: its special rule erases the collectors' advantage, but its entry point remains reserved for those who once accepted a side quest.
The schedule, and the time reference
The announcement gives a single window, expressed in server time: 2026/08/29 10:00 ~ 2026/09/14 03:59. On the Europe server that reference is UTC+1; the America server runs on UTC-5 and the Asia server on UTC+8.
| 7.0 Content | Opening (server time) | Closing (server time) |
|---|---|---|
| Heated Battle Mode: Tactical Formation | 08/29 at 10:00 | 09/14 at 03:59 |
| Phase 2 wishes | 09/01 at 18:00 | 09/22 at 14:59 |
In practical terms: opening at 10:00 this Saturday and closing during the night of Sunday the 13th to Monday, September 14 at 03:59, both in your own server's time. A little less than sixteen days.
Above all, remember the gap with the line below. Heated Battle Mode closes eight days before the phase 2 wishes, which run until September 22. So don't align this content with "the end of the version": it starts early, and its first three days even fall before phase 2 begins, on Tuesday, September 1 at 6 p.m.
No named reward
This is the blind spot of the announcement, and it's worth stating plainly: the "Rewards" block on the official page contains only an icon. No label, no quantity, no tier. HoYoverse therefore names no event currency, and we won't go guessing one from a pictogram.
So no one can decide today between "worth checking out" and "can wait" based on the payout: it isn't published. Open the panel in-game starting at 10 a.m. server time, the list will be there. If you come across a numbered rewards table elsewhere, it doesn't come from this announcement.
What to do this weekend
- Check "Battlefield of Dice, Cats, and Cards." This is the only step that can't be improvised on the last day. As long as it isn't finished, everything else is theoretical.
- Go to the Invitation Board of The Cat's Tail. That's where the entry point is, and the announcement cites no other.
- Check your Player Level before relying on matchmaking. Below 4, you'll need a willing teammate, not a queue.
- Don't aim for September 13. Closing falls at 03:59 the next day, server time: by Sunday evening, there's already almost nothing left.
Verdict: this is the least demanding content of this version's ending in terms of preparation, and the most poorly documented in terms of payout. If the mode is already unlocked for you, sixteen days of duels with no deck building cost almost nothing. Otherwise, the real task of the weekend isn't the event — it's the quest that opens it.

Key takeaways
- You don't play your own deck — character cards chosen on the spot and randomized action cards eliminate any collection advantage
- Matchmaking requires Player Level 4, not Adventure Rank: a highly advanced account can still be blocked if it just unlocked the cards
- The only real prerequisite: having completed the quest "Of Dice and Cats and Cards", the same condition as the previous event
- The mode closes September 14 at 3:59 AM, eight days before the end of phase 2 — don't wait too long
- No reward is named in the official announcement, only an icon: impossible to judge whether it's worth it before opening the in-game panel
