In brief

Cedric Grace, the paranoid lord of Clairval Manor, has gone into hiding following the events of chapter 3. To find him in this House Grace quest, you'll need to solve a complex puzzle: recover a secret key, obtain two daggers by manipulating a light-up wheel, then insert them into a fireplace to access the basement where he's hiding. Once found, report the information to the House Grace servant to officially complete the quest.

The quest 'The Lord Who Hid in the Manor' arrives fairly late in the Hernand region's progression: first you need to defeat the Reed Devil boss in chapter 3, then advance the Grace House faction to stage 3/5 by completing the quests Celestial Borough, Pollengarth Apiary and Airship in the Skies. Once the chain The Owner of Clairval Manor is unlocked, the manor puzzle awaits you - and it's noticeably trickier than it looks.

Important warning

Don't solve the puzzle before you have the quest active. The Steam and Reddit communities report a well-known bug where the objective "Obtain the golden dagger" stays stuck if you've already picked up the daggers. If this happens to you, go back to the trigger points in the manor or reuse the fireplace to restart the script.

How to start the quest

Talk to the servant marked on your map to trigger The New Lord's Fate. Follow him while talking - the conversation ends in front of Glenbright Manor, in the south of the Hernand Highlands. He advises you to enter through the second-floor window, at the top right of the facade. Do so. The quest The Lord Who Hid in the Manor starts immediately.

Step 1 - The basement key behind the painting

Entering through the window, you arrive in a room with a fireplace. Remember this spot well: you'll come back to it. Go down to the bottom of the main staircase. To the left of the steps, a painting hangs on the wall, and the floor beneath it bears suspicious scratches. Walk straight through this wall without looking for a door: a turning passage opens onto a small hidden room. Pick up the Clairval Manor basement key from the table, then head back out.

Step 2 - The puzzle with the statue and the two daggers

Go up to the second floor and turn immediately left. A statue of a man holding a large sphere stands there. Open the closet to the left of this statue: it hides a concealed wheel. Turn it until the beam of light centers on the circle the statue is holding. This mechanism unlocks two wall hiding spots, one on each side.

  • Dagger adorned with a blue stone: to the left of the wheel
  • Dagger adorned with a blue stone:  on a display stand to the right of the wheel

Pick up both daggers. Without them, the rest is blocked.

Step 3 - The fireplace, the library and the basement

Go back to the room with the fireplace, on the left side of the second-floor hallway. Above the fireplace, two slots await you. Insert each dagger into its slot. The bookcase to the right rotates, revealing a secret passage. Climb down the ladder inside, follow the basement corridor to an ordinary wooden door, and use the basement key to open it.

Finding Cedric Grace - and the limits of success

Behind the door, Cedric Grace, the lord of Clairval Manor, is holed up in the darkness. He is completely paranoid, convinced that the Reed Devil will come back for him. Even if you tell him the boss is dead, he flatly refuses to come out. The conversation leads nowhere. And that's intentional.

Go back to the Grace House servant, whose position is marked on your map - he's at the Porteforge Tannery, northwest of the manor. Tell him about his lord's state to officially complete the quest.

Rewards

  • Jewelry box (x1): a box containing a random gem. Upon opening it, you might get an Azurite, among other possibilities.

Honestly, the reward is modest compared to the complexity of the puzzle. But the quest is part of a larger chain around Grace House, and unlocking these steps remains necessary to progress through the Hernand region's storyline.
