Battlefield 6 free from August 18 to 25: the 4 maps, the 6 trial modes — and EA's fine print

Battlefield 6 opens up for free from August 18 to 25, 2026, and the entry point isn't the one you'd expect: this isn't a separately downloadable demo, but rather temporary access grafted onto Battlefield REDSEC, the game's free-to-play component. You install REDSEC, and the trial playlists show up in the menu.

The opening is timed to the rollout of the Season 4 Top Gun update, this Tuesday, August 18 at 12:00 UTC, i.e. 2:00 PM in Paris. The window closes on August 25.

EA has given two different counts: "four maps and four playlists" in its French event guide, "six modes and four maps" in its patch notes. Both are accurate — the official infographic makes it possible to reconcile the two, which is useful for knowing what you'll actually be able to play.

Four maps, including the two showcases of the Top Gun phase

The trial gives access to four locations:

• Wake Island — the return of the series' historic map, going live the same day as the Top Gun update.
• Siege of Shanghai — the game's largest map, expanded for the occasion with usable aircraft carriers.
• Cairo Bazaar and Hagental Base — EA's patch notes are only published in English and cite these two names as-is; we keep them as no French version has been published.

The first two are exactly the maps the Top Gun phase is built around. In other words, the trial doesn't offer back-catalog content: it puts you directly on the new content.

Four playlists containing six modes: that's where the gap comes from

EA's official infographic lists four menu entries, one of which groups three modes on its own:

Carrier Assault is the revival of the old Carrier Assault mode, overhauled into a combined-arms clash: infantry pushes through, naval units provide support, aircraft hold the skies, and victory is achieved by destroying the enemy's carrier. This is the mode that justifies the trial all by itself.

The two-seat fighter jets are the selling point, and they're flown by two players

The update introduces two aircraft that the trial makes accessible: the F/A-81F Super Spectre, a two-seat NATO fighter built for air superiority and precision strikes, and the F-74A Seacat, whose variable-geometry wings adjust in flight.

The two seats aren't decorative: pilot and co-pilot share the workload. EA says so in its official tips — "when it comes to new vehicles, all aviators have a WSO behind them," meaning a Weapons Systems Officer, seated behind the pilot. If you invite a friend to try the trial, put them in your cockpit rather than in another squad.

The learning ground is called Survival: Air Superiority, a REDSEC mode made up exclusively of fighter jets, in pairs. It's permanently free since it falls under REDSEC, trial or not.

The Top Gun event lasts three weeks longer than the trial

This is the discrepancy to know before diving in. The event runs from August 18 at 12:00 UTC to September 15 at 12:00 UTC, i.e. four weeks, while free access ends after seven days.

Its system relies on Elite Medals, a temporary currency earned by completing challenges. Two tracks grant them: Ace Pilot challenges, open to everyone, whose payout increases with difficulty, and BF Pro challenges, reserved for Season 4 subscribers, sold separately.

Medals are exchanged for ten items, unlocked in any order you choose: weapon bundles across several categories, aircraft skins, profile items. Those who unlock all ten gain access to one final exchange, the Aviation Ace soldier skin. EA specifies that all the medals needed can be obtained purely by playing: the two store packs that contain them are a shortcut, not a requirement.

What the trial doesn't cover, and the fine print

Three limits are worth laying out before you download:

• The trial requires owning Battlefield REDSEC and all game updates. It's free, but it's a full download, not something to start an hour before you want to play.
• EA's footnote is unambiguous: Carrier Assault, the multiplayer maps, and certain content require Battlefield 6, sold separately. The trial lifts this restriction for seven days; on August 25, it returns.
• The single-player campaign isn't part of the offer, which only mentions multiplayer playlists.

One last practical point: owners of the full game will cross paths with trial players in these same playlists. So you won't be confined to matches reserved for newcomers — and many of your opponents will be several seasons ahead.

The week's plan, if you only have a few evenings

Seven days go by fast. In order of value:

1. Start with Carrier Assault on Tsuru Reef: this is the mode that EA's footnote specifically names as reserved for game owners outside the trial period.
2. Move on to Wake Island in Conquest, the map everyone will want to have seen.
3. Track your challenges from the main menu, Challenges section, by "tracking" the ones you're aiming for — they then appear in the pause menu, saving you from going back through menus between matches.
4. Group challenges from the same family together (all those tied to Carrier Assault, or all those tied to a single aircraft): EA explicitly recommends this method to accumulate medals faster.
