In brief

Amplitude Studios announced Humankind 2 at gamescom 2024 for 2027 on PC, but the announcement trailer immediately sparked accusations of AI generation. The studio denied this by producing behind-the-scenes photos from actual filming at Nu Boyana Studios in Sofia, with real actors and physical sets, although the CGI backgrounds remain unexplained.

Amplitude Studios announced Humankind 2 on August 25, during gamescom's Opening Night Live, for a release in 2027 on PC. Discussion immediately shifted to the announcement trailer, a live-action film accused of having been generated by AI.

Filmed in Sofia, with set photos to prove it

The studio denied it: the trailer was filmed at Nu Boyana Studios, in Sofia, with "real actors, real sets, and custom-built props". PC Gamer, the recipient of this response, states it saw behind-the-scenes photos showing the actors on set, in front of partial sets and a blue screen.

The denial covers the trailer, and nothing else: Amplitude did not specify how the CGI backgrounds were produced. Still, the AI accusation has become a reflex, and a studio must now prove otherwise to defend a film it actually shot.

The game itself remains historical turn-based strategy. The Steam page promises to combine "ever-evolving cultures" while "a shifting climate reshapes the world". The climate isn't just a backdrop: every decision has consequences for it and for your people's culture.

Mind the language. As of August 26, Humankind 2's Steam page only lists English. The first Humankind, released on August 17, 2021, was translated into French — interface and subtitles, without voice-over. No French localization has been confirmed for the sequel so far.

Amplitude, a Paris-based studio that became independent again after splitting from Sega, releases this sequel almost exactly five years after the first installment, on the heels of ENDLESS Legend II.
