AION 2 Stress Test: Dates, Times, and How to Join
In brief
NCSOFT is opening AION 2's doors to everyone on September 17 and 18, with no key or sign-up required, for a total of twelve hours of load testing. The level cap will be set at 37, the shop will be closed, and all progress will be wiped after the test — a free window to check compatibility, choose a class, and set up controls ahead of the early access launch on September 30.
NCSOFT announced on Wednesday, August 26, 2026 the organization of a pre-launch test for AION 2, on September 17 and 18. This is the first time the publisher has opened the game to the West without any filter: "open to everyone: no key, invitation, or registration required".
The test comes between the two already-known milestones: early access on September 30 and launch on October 5.
A correction to yesterday's article
On August 26, we relayed the press release distributed by NC during the Opening Night Live, which announced a "Launch Scale Test" on September 17 and 18 "by registration", noting at the time that the Steam page had no registration button and that the details remained to be confirmed.
They have now been confirmed, and they say the opposite: there is no registration at all. NCSOFT's official announcement is categorical — "no key, invitation, or registration required." So there's nothing to watch for on the Steam page between now and mid-September: it will simply be a matter of downloading the test client on the 16th.
The exact schedule, in CEST
NCSOFT publishes its schedule in PDT and CEST. Here is the timetable as given, with Central European Summer Time (CEST):
| Stage | Time slot (CEST) |
|---|---|
| Preload | From September 16 at 3 p.m. to September 17 at 3 p.m. |
| Day 1 | September 17, from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. |
| Day 2 | From September 18 at 9 p.m. to September 19 at 3 a.m. |
The mismatch between the two days is not a misreading: the first slot falls in the late afternoon, the second in the dead of night. A European player who wants to play the full twelve hours will have to stay up through the night from Friday to Saturday.
Only two platforms: Steam and PURPLE, NCSOFT's in-house launcher. Play time is capped: 6 hours per day, 12 hours total.
What the test will not include
The publisher lists five restrictions, and they are severe. They mostly reveal what NCSOFT is trying to measure: server stability, not monetization.
- No purchases possible. The store, Luna, Pass, subscriptions, and payment portals are all disabled.
- No trading. The Marketplace, Luna trades, and player-to-player trading are all cut off.
- No Founder's Pack items. Those who purchased a pack will not be able to use it during the test.
- Wardrobe disabled. Only default outfits will be available.
- Level cap: 37. Content reserved for higher levels remains locked.
The level cap is what will determine how much of the game can be judged: at 37, players will see neither the Abyss nor the end-of-progression content. This test will give a sense of the pacing of the early hours, not of the endgame.
Progression: kept for two days, then wiped
NCSOFT is explicit about the three stages:
- progress is kept between the two test days;
- it is deleted at the end of Day 2;
- there is no transfer to early access or to launch.
Day 1 thus serves as the foundation for day 2, but nothing will survive until September 19. For those planning to play seriously starting on the 30th, this test is a proving ground — a chance to pick a class and try out settings without wasting any useful time.

The Steam player trap: an app to uninstall
This is the easiest detail to miss, and it will cost a whole evening to those who do:
“Steam players must uninstall the test app and download AION 2 separately to take part in early access on September 30.”
The test runs on a separate Steam listing — app 4972320, different from the one for AION 2. In other words, the client installed on September 16 won't work on the 30th: the full game will need to be downloaded again, and an MMO doesn't download in five minutes.
PURPLE players, on the other hand, “don't have any additional steps to take”.
What this says about the schedule
A stress test open to everyone, thirteen days before early access, is a classic exercise: the goal is to push the servers to their breaking point, not to fine-tune balance. The fact that NCSOFT is holding it without a key or sign-up points in the same direction — the more people involved, the more useful the test is.
Two unknowns remain unresolved, and nothing in the announcement clarifies them:
- Servers and open regions. NCSOFT does not say whether the test will run on the final infrastructure.
- Available languages. The test announcement does not say which of the game's language versions will be in place on September 17.
What these twelve hours are really for
\n\nWith a level cap of 37, a locked wardrobe, and no founder items, the test does not allow AION 2 to be evaluated as a finished product. It does, however, allow three concrete things, provided you prepare for them:
\n\n- \n
- Check that the game runs on your machine. This is the only chance to do so before committing time on September 30, and it's free. \n
- Try out a class. Twelve hours is more than enough to get a feel for an archetype at the early tiers, and to avoid discovering at level 30 that you picked the wrong role. \n
- Set up your controls and interface. An MMO only needs configuring once; better to do it on a server that will be wiped. \n
On the other hand, anything related to the economy is off the table: the Marketplace is closed, trading is disabled, and the shop is deactivated. The monetization questions that have occupied the community since the announcement of the Founder Packs won't be answered during these two days — a Thursday and a Friday, not a weekend.
\n\nDates to mark on your calendar
- September 16, 3 p.m. — start the pre-load, don't wait until the next day.
- September 17, 3 p.m. – 9 p.m. — Day 1, six hours.
- September 18, 9 p.m. – September 19, 3 a.m. — Day 2, six hours, overnight.
- After the 19th — uninstall the test app if you're on Steam, then start downloading AION 2 before September 30.
