Sims 4 Gardening: Grafting, the Dark Orchid, and Rare Plants

In The Sims 4 (EA / Maxis), gardening looks like a chill skill: you plant three tomatoes, water them, and cash in a few simoleons. Then you discover grafting, hybrid plants, a fruit that revives your Sim, and a plant creature that devours visitors. This base game skill actually hides one of the deepest systems in the game, with its secret botany, money trees, and deadly flowers. Here's how to go from beginner sprout to the famous dark orchid.

The Gardening skill, level by level

Gardening is leveled up like the other base game skills: by practicing, by reading the three volumes available at the library (levels 1-3, 4-6, then 7+), and by regularly tending to your plants. Each tier unlocks a specific interaction on planters and plots.

Levels 1 to 4: the basics

• Level 1: your Sim can buy seeds, plant, water, weed, and harvest. Each plant displays a health status shown by a green, orange, or red icon.
• Level 2-3: maintenance speed increases, and mistakes (weeds, sick plants) become rarer.
• Level 4: your Sim unlocks the "Talk to Plants" interaction, which fulfills social needs without needing another character nearby.

Levels 5 to 10: the real hidden mechanics

• Level 5: unlocks fertilizing. You can throw leftover meals, fish, or other plants on as fertilizer.
• Level 7: grafting becomes available. This is the real turning point for gardening.
• Level 8: opens up bonsai trees and pruning in dedicated pots.
• Level 9-10: ultra-fast maintenance, plants that more easily reach "Perfect" quality, and maximum financial yield.

Tip: open a gardening book volume 1 right at the start of the game. Reading raises the skill without tiring out your Sim, unlike repeated digging, which quickly drains energy and hygiene.

Life cycle: planting, watering, weeding, harvesting

A plant in The Sims 4 goes through several stages: seed, sprout, young plant, mature. The time it takes depends on the quality of care and the presence of a sunroom or greenhouse (Seasons expansion) to avoid frost and drought.

To keep the green icon, three actions are enough:

• Water as soon as the soil looks dry (once or twice a day depending on the season).
• Weed systematically, otherwise quality drops and the harvest suffers.
• Evolve the plant when the "Evolve" action appears: it raises quality by one notch (up to Perfect).

Quality ranges from Rotten to Perfect. The same tomato sells for a few simoleons at Normal quality, but brings in much more once Perfect, and improves the quality of dishes cooked with it. This is therefore the key factor for any Sim aspiring to be a chef or a Master Gardener.

Fertilizer: quality makes the difference

Starting at level 5, fertilizing becomes the garden's quiet accelerator. You can fertilize with almost anything: meal leftovers, caught fish, condiments, or another harvested plant. The higher the quality of the item, the more powerful the boost.

Some particularly rewarding fertilizers:

• Rare or golden fish: the best time/effect ratio, especially early in the garden.
• Already harvested Perfect Fruits: a virtuous loop that speeds up the transition of young plants into Perfect quality.
• Spoiled dishes: avoids waste and prevents flies from appearing on the plot.

A quality fish placed at the foot of a young sprout can make it gain several quality tiers at once. It's the fastest method to get a "Perfect" orchid before attempting the final grafts.

Grafting, the key to hybrid plants

Grafting unlocks starting at gardening level 7. The idea: take a cutting from plant A, then graft it onto plant B. Plant B keeps its own nature… but also produces the fruits, flowers, or vegetables of plant A. This way, you can get two harvests from a single plant, and above all create species that don't exist in nature.

How to graft

1. Select a mature plant, click on Take a Cutting. The cutting appears in the inventory.
2. Click on the receiving plant, choose Graft, then select the cutting from the list.
3. Wait for it to mature: the receiving plant will now display both types of harvests.

The iconic hybrids

• Orchid = Lily + Snapdragon
• Pomegranate = Apple + Cherry
• Death Flower (Dark Orchid) = Orchid + Pomegranate
• Banana = Pear + Lemon
• Dragon Fruit = Strawberry + Snapdragon
• Cowplant Berry = Snapdragon + Dragon Fruit
• Bird of Paradise = Tulip + Chrysanthemum
• Bonsai Bud = Strawberry + Daisy

Note: lilies and snapdragons are mainly found in Willow Creek and Oasis Springs, and some plants can also be fished (pomegranate in the Willow Creek clearing, snapdragon in the Oasis Springs cave).

The legendary plants of the base game

Once the classic hybrids are mastered, the true pleasure of gardening begins: tracking down the rare plants that unlock unique mechanics.

The Dark Orchid (Death Flower)

This is the plant to get. Its recipe: Orchid + Pomegranate, grafted after a long path of successive hybridizations. Its property is unique in the game: if you give it to the Grim Reaper when he comes to collect a Sim, he gives you back the deceased and leaves empty-handed. In other words, the dark orchid prevents death, even for Sims who are already elderly or in the middle of drowning.

The Cowplant (man-eating plant)

Obtained by planting a cowplant berry (Snapdragon + Dragon Fruit), the cowplant is half-plant, half-cow. It needs to be fed every 12 hours. When hungry, it holds out a piece of cake on its tongue to attract curious visitors: the Sim who takes a bite is swallowed whole. Once fed, it produces cowplant essence milk with variable effects depending on its last meal.

The Money Tree

Unlike the others, it can't be obtained through grafting: the seeds are purchased at the Rewards Store with Satisfaction Points for 5,000 points. Once planted, it takes about five days to mature, then yields several thousand Simoleons per harvest depending on its quality. It's one of the best investments in the base game.

Mandrake root, deadly fish, and other curiosities

Mandrake root and deathfish don't grow in the garden, but serve as ingredient rewards for rare recipes and potions. You'll come across them through fishing, exploration, or certain DLCs (Vampires, Island Living). Harvest them and keep them fresh: they make excellent boosted fertilizers for your most precious hybrids.

Our game plan through to the dark orchid

To close the loop without getting lost, here's the typical route for a Sims 4 gardener aiming for the ultimate trophy. Count on a good week of play if you play without cheats, a few hours with time accelerators and greenhouses.

1. Buy three planter boxes and immediately plant apple, cherry, lily, snapdragon — all can be found in Willow Creek and Oasis Springs.
2. Level the skill up to 5 by watering every morning and reading gardening books while waiting for harvests.
3. Fertilize everything you can: fish, meal leftovers, ruined dishes. Aim for the Perfect quality on each plant before taking a cutting.
4. Once you reach level 7, graft Apple + Cherry for the Pomegranate and Lily + Snapdragon for the Orchid. Wait for them to reach Perfect maturity.
5. Final step: Orchid + Pomegranate. The resulting flower is the dark orchid. Keep it safe in your Sim's inventory.

A single Sim can carry several dark orchids. It's the best birthday gift to give an elder nearing the end: the Grim Reaper will accept the offering and leave without their prey.

Bonus: once the Freelance Botanist aspiration is completed, your hybrids grow faster and your harvests reach Perfect quality almost automatically. Combined with the money tree, a ten-plot garden can bring in several tens of thousands of Simoleons per week without lifting a finger, while also building up a stockpile of dark orchids for the whole family.

Freelance Botanist aspiration and the Scientist career

Two goals pair well with gardening. The Freelance Botanist aspiration requires reaching level 10 in Gardening, harvesting Perfects, and collecting most of the plants in the game. It rewards you with a dark orchid and unlocks the Green Thumb version, which makes plants grow faster just by touching them.

The Scientist career (Get to Work expansion) — often nicknamed the "mad scientist career" — offers quests alongside it that use the garden as a lab: hybrids to create, plants to clone via the SimRay, and serums to concoct. The Gardening + Scientist combo turns your Sim into a genuine plant doctor.
