Sims 4 Aspirations: Full List, How to Choose, and Rewards
In brief
Aspirations structure your Sims' long-term progression across four milestones, unlocking Satisfaction Points and a permanent bonus trait. This guide lists all the categories (Love, Creativity, Fortune, etc.), explains how to choose them and change them in-game, and suggests the best ones to start with hassle-free.
Choosing a Sims 4 aspiration is one of the very first decisions you make for a new Sim, even before sculpting their face or populating their trait library. Yet this little yellow hexagon determines what will occupy your character for dozens of hours of gameplay: a life goal broken down into four major stages, a shower of satisfaction points, and, at the very end, a permanent bonus trait that stays etched even if you change your ambition afterward. This guide covers all the categories, cites the standout rewards, and offers you a short-list to get started with confidence.
What is an aspiration in The Sims 4?
An aspiration is your Sim's long-term life dream. Where whims (the little green bubbles that pop up in-game) reflect short-term needs, the aspiration structures a character's entire progression. It's made up of four successive stages, each of which unlocks a shower of satisfaction points (the currency used to buy reward traits, see our dedicated guide). Once the fourth stage is completed, the Sim also pockets a permanent bonus trait.
The bonus trait stays with the Sim for their entire life, even if you switch aspirations afterward. In theory, you can therefore chain several aspirations to stack several bonus traits on the same character.

How to choose and change aspirations
There are two possible moments to set an aspiration:
- In Create-A-Sim (CAS): when creating an adult, young adult, or teen character, a yellow hexagon sits near the personality traits. Click on it to browse all the categories and select a starting aspiration.
- In-game, via the Aspiration tab: in the left-hand interface, open the "Aspirations" panel then click the change icon. You can switch as many times as you like, with no penalty — stages already completed remain locked in if you come back to the same aspiration later.
Note: children choose a separate aspiration when they move into their life stage, and teens also have their own small dedicated list since the High School Years expansion.
Structure: 4 stages and a final reward
Every aspiration always follows the same pattern:
- Stage 1: simple objectives (talk to Sims, read a book, cook a dish).
- Stage 2: raising the related skill and first specific interactions.
- Stage 3: advanced career or socializing requirements.
- Stage 4: the grand finale — mastering a skill to level 10, writing a best-seller, reaching the top of a career, etc.
Each completed stage grants a batch of satisfaction points; completing the fourth stage unlocks the reward trait. For example, the Big Happy Family aspiration awards the "Fertile" trait, which increases the likelihood of twins and triplets.
Tip: if a stage has you stuck, the cheat code
aspirations.complete_current_milestoneinstantly completes the current milestone. See our cheat codes guide for full usage.
Love and Family aspirations
These are the great narrative classics of The Sims. Three aspirations dominate the category:
- Serial Romantic (sometimes translated as "Heartbreaker"): go on as many dates as possible. Reward: Alluring.
- Soulmate: build a stable relationship and get married. Reward: Romantic Lover.
- Big Happy Family: have plenty of children and build a lineage. Reward: Fertile, one of the most sought-after traits for legacy-style playthroughs.
Athletic and Food Aspirations
For Sims who prefer muscle or the stove:
- Fabulously Fit (athlete): jog, work out, climb the Athletic career. Reward: Never Weary.
- Bodybuilder: iron-pumping and strength competitions. Reward: Toned — muscle mass never fades away.
- Master Chef: max out Cooking and Gourmet Cooking, reach the top rungs of culinary careers. Reward: Great Chef, dishes go up a notch in quality.
- Mixology Master: max out the Mixology skill. Reward: Craft Beverage, better drinks served to guests.
Creativity and Knowledge Aspirations
The brainy and artistic branch of the game, very popular for Sims who work from home:
- Bestselling Author: write increasingly lucrative books. Reward: Bestselling Author.
- Painter Extraordinaire: churn out one masterpiece painting after another. Reward: Masterpiece — paintings are regularly excellent.
- Musical Genius: master piano, guitar, and violin. Reward: Piano-Forte, increased instrumental virtuosity.
- Computer Whiz: hack, program, play. Reward: Web Master.
- Nerd Brain: master Logic and Handiness. Reward: Handy, instant repairs and upgrades.
- Renaissance Sim: max out several skills at once. Reward: Professorial, your Sim can then write manuals in the fields they've mastered.
Wealth, Nature, and Popularity Aspirations
The pursuit of riches, the outdoor life, or the social whirl — everyone finds their own playground:
- Fabulously Wealthy: reach and then surpass one million Simoleons. Reward: Financially Fabulous — automatic daily Simoleon bonus.
- Master Landlord: own a high-value built estate.
- Rags to Riches: live on little, save up, refuse opulence. Reward: Thrifty, bills are permanently reduced.
- Freelance Botanist: master gardening and collect every species. Reward: Green Thumb.
- Outdoor Enthusiast: fishing, camping, herbalism. Reward: Carefree.
- Friend of the World: build friendships with a great number of Sims. Reward: Charismatic.
- World Famous Celebrity or Party Animal: throw five-star parties and build up their aura. Reward: Party Animal.
Role-Play and Deviance Aspirations
Since the post-2019 updates, "role-play" aspirations add a narrative layer to strong archetypes:
- Vagabond: living on the fringes, sleeping on benches and fishing for dinner. Reward: Free Spirit.
- Child of the Islands (Digital Native): streaming, gaming and living at the rhythm of screens. Reward: Video Game Pro.
- Public Enemy (Deviance branch): stacking up mean acts and climbing the Criminal career. Reward: Powerful.
Tip: "role-play" aspirations are perfect for testing out a specific story (a reclusive Sim, a computer hacker, a romantic drifter) without relying on a paid pack.
Aspirations from add-on packs
Every expansion or game pack adds one or more aspirations, often tied to the pack's flagship mechanic:
- Cats & Dogs: Friend of the Animals, building an inseparable bond with a pet.
- Vampires: Vampire Family, maximizing occult powers. Reward: True Master.
- Realm of Magic: Spellcraft & Sorcery, becoming a well-rounded spellcaster. Reward: Subtle Spellcaster.
- City Living: Gastro Gnome, trying every food truck and restaurant in the neighborhood.
- Jungle Adventure: Archaeology Scholar, exploring the temples of Selvadorada. Reward: Museum Patron.
- Discover University: University Studies, degree and skills fast-tracked.

Child, Teen and Elder aspirations
Non-adult life stages also have their own lists:
- Child: four aspirations focused on Mental, Artistic Prodigy, Motor, or Social Butterfly. Each unlocks a child trait that's useful in the teen years.
- Teen (High School Years): four specific aspirations (high school star, drama club, etc.) that only teens can start.
- Elder: no dedicated aspiration, but elders can continue or pick back up any adult aspiration.
The 5 best aspirations to start with
- Bestselling Author: profitable from step 2 onward, playable from home, ideal for a first attempt.
- Nerd Brain: the Handy trait saves a fortune on repairs and prevents appliance fires.
- Friend of the World: boosts every other social aspiration thanks to the Charismatic trait.
- Big Happy Family: essential for a dynasty-focused save, the Fertile trait opens up unique mechanical possibilities.
- Freelance Botanist: huge passive income from harvests, ideal for modest beginnings.
