PUBG: Battlegrounds — the guide to Secret Rooms on Taego and Rondo after 42.2 (keys, jars, loot)
In brief
Update 42.2 has completely overhauled the loot in Taego and Rondo's Secret Rooms: eleven brand-new items on Taego, reshuffled weapon pools, and a clarified mechanic on Rondo. With these two maps in featured rotation until August 13, now is the perfect time to make the most of these locked-off areas before everything changes again.
Update 42.2, rolled out on PC on July 15, 2026 and on console on July 23, didn't just bring back Solo Deathmatch and the Hot Drop mode: it also thoroughly reworked the loot in Taego's and Rondo's Secret Rooms. Rearranged shelves, eleven brand-new items on Taego's side, a reshuffled weapon pool on both maps — if you haven't opened one of those locked doors in a few months, what's waiting behind them has changed.
The timing couldn't be better to get back into it. In the current Normal Match rotation (Europe region), Taego has been a fixed map on PC since Wednesday, August 5, while on console, both Taego and Rondo have been running as featured maps since Thursday, August 6. In other words: the two maps with reworked Secret Rooms are exactly the ones filling up the queues this week.
This guide sums up how Secret Rooms work in 2026, the ways to get a key, the details of the new loot — and the catch that many players find out too late: keys only exist in Normal Match, never in Ranked mode.
How Secret Rooms work in 2026
Taego introduced the system with update 13.1 on July 28, 2021: secret room keys scattered among ground loot let players open locked doors located around the map — the community counts a dozen of them, from the outskirts all the way to the center. Inside, the base loot hasn't changed in five years: an Auto Defibrillator (the item that lets you revive yourself after being knocked down), aim-assist scopes, a low chance of care package items, and large quantities of healing and throwable items.
Rondo got its own Secret Rooms much later, with 38.2 on November 4, 2025. The concept differs on one point there: each locked zone has four doors, and opening just one unlocks them all. The direct tactical consequence: a wide-open door can be spotted from afar and signals to everyone that someone has gone through — or is still inside.
Other maps have their own locked loot zones, but 42.2 only touches Taego and Rondo: that's where the current interest lies.
Where to find a secret room key
- In ground loot: keys spawn randomly across the entire map, just like weapons and healing items. There's no guaranteed spawn point — you loot normally and treat the key as a bonus.
- In destructible jars: introduced with 35.2 on May 13, 2025, first on Erangel and Taego before a gradual rollout to the other 8x8 maps, these jars can be smashed with a single weapon or melee hit and may drop extra items, keys included. The Auto Defibrillator, however, no longer appears there since that same update: to get one, you now have to enter the room.
One crucial rule to know, spelled out in black and white in the 35.2 patch notes: secret room keys only spawn in Normal Match mode. Ranked mode in 42.2 does run Erangel, Miramar, Taego, and Rondo at 25% each, but you'll never find a key there. So there's no point building a ranked strategy around Secret Rooms: they belong exclusively to regular public matches.
Taego: eleven brand-new items and a reshuffled weapon pool
Update 42.2 changed the shelf layout in Taego's Secret Room and, more importantly, added items there that had never appeared in it before. The official list:
- Ghillie Suits (the French client keeps the English name);
- pickaxe;
- jammer pack;
- foldable shield;
- mountain bike;
- mortar;
- repair kit;
- M79;
- taser;
- grappling gun;
- emergency cover flare.
Strategic reading: the room is no longer just an equipment chest, it has become a full utility stop. You can come out of it with a folded mountain bike in your inventory to speed up rotations, a mortar and a foldable shield to hold a position at the end of the game, or a Ghillie Suit that's worth its weight in gold on Taego's open hills. The jammer pack, for its part, secures late-game movements in the blue zone, and the grappling gun opens up repositioning lines that nobody expects.
The weapon pool has also been reshuffled by 42.2:
| Weapons added | Weapons removed |
|---|---|
| ACE32, M24, Kar98k, UZI, UMP, Saiga | K2, VSS, S686 |
The direction of the change is clear: niche weapons (VSS, S686) and the K2 are stepping aside in favor of the current meta's sure bets. Picking up an M24 or a Kar98k in the first few minutes, with the scopes lying around on the same shelves, changes the tempo of a match on a map as open as Taego.
Rondo: crate weapons put back in their place
On the Rondo side, the 42.2 change is more subtle but just as structural. Until now, supply crate weapons had a chance to appear in any weapon slot within the locked zone; they can now only spawn from their dedicated slot. The jackpot becomes less random, and the visit more readable: on entering, there's just one spot to check to know whether the detour paid off.
The weapon rotation follows this refocus: Saiga12, UMP, MP5K, and JS9 join the pool, the VSS drops out. A clear shift toward close-quarters combat, consistent with the dense urban compounds in Rondo where these zones are located: you come out of the room equipped to clear a compound, not to hold a ridge at 400 meters.
The right instincts once you've got the key
- Make the detour early. A Secret Room's value is at its peak in the first circles: full gear, full heals, an Auto-defibrillator in your pocket before the first skirmishes. Late in the game, the same trip exposes a lot for an uncertain payoff.
- Read the door before going in. An open door means someone has already been through — and in Rondo, where opening one door unlocks the other three, that information is valuable for the whole area. Grenade or go around, but don't walk in exposed.
- Prioritize the Auto-defibrillator. Whether solo or in a small squad, it's the room's most valuable item: it turns a distant knockdown into a minor setback.
- Share within your squad. Heals and throwables come out in large quantities: a single key found by one teammate can resupply all four players.
- Think about your exit. A mountain bike or grappling gun picked up on the spot saves you from crossing on foot through a plain everyone is already watching.
A window closing in mid-August
The current Normal Match rotation switches every Wednesday at 4 a.m. on PC and every Thursday at 9 a.m. on console (Paris time). On PC, the week with Taego as a fixed map therefore runs until the morning of Wednesday, August 12; on console, Rondo and Taego remain featured maps until Thursday, August 13, the date of the last switch planned in the 42.2 map operation report. Beyond that, the next major update will reshuffle the maps and, perhaps, the contents of the shelves once again.
Until then, the math is simple: two reworked maps, packed queues, and keys dropping just as often on the ground as in the destructible jars of Erangel and Taego. If a secret room key crosses your path this week, don't leave it on the ground — it's rarely the loot that disappoints, it's the player who arrives too late.

Key takeaways
- Secret Room keys only exist in Normal Match, never in Ranked mode — no point looking for them in ranked.
- Taego now features Ghillie Suits, ATVs, mortars, grappling guns and plenty more items that make it far more than just an equipment chest.
- On Rondo, crate weapons now only spawn from their dedicated slot, making loot much less random and the visit more strategic.
- The Secret Room detour is most worthwhile early on: an open door or the sound of fighting tells you the spot is occupied and potentially trapped.
- The Self-AED remains the most valuable item: it turns a knockdown into a mere setback, decisive whether you're solo or squadded up.
