In brief

PUBG: Battlegrounds update 42.3 transforms shooting from a moving vehicle with three combined penalties — increased bullet spread, amplified recoil, and the requirement to fully lean out before firing. Drive-bys stop being a viable strategy, forcing squads to slow down or drop off their passengers before making contact.

The 42.3 update for PUBG: Battlegrounds was rolled out on PC this Wednesday, August 12, 2026, following maintenance from 2:00 to 10:30 AM Paris time. Consoles will follow on August 20.

The LMG meta shuffle and the new PUBG: Playgrounds hub have already been covered in detail in our pages. This guide focuses on what the summaries left out — namely a change that will alter how squad rotations play out: shooting from a moving vehicle is becoming noticeably less reliable.

Vehicle shooting: the real gameplay change

Until now, the firing window from a moving vehicle was one of the most profitable tools in the game: a passenger leaning out the door could interrupt a heal, break up a rotation, or finish off a downed player, at full speed and without any real drawback.

42.3 introduces three stacking penalties:

  • Bullet spread now starts with a 10% penalty and climbs progressively up to 20% as speed increases;
  • recoil is penalized by 20 to 30%;
  • and above all, you now have to be fully leaned out before you can shoot. No more firing mid-animation, right as you lean out of the vehicle.

The tactical consequence is clear. Drive-bys are no longer a first-resort option. Starting with this update, engaging from a moving vehicle against a stationary, well-positioned opponent becomes a bad trade in most situations.

What to adopt instead: slow down before engaging. Since the spread penalty is tied to speed, a sharp deceleration restores a good deal of accuracy. And for squads that used to rotate while shooting, the new standard will be to drop the passenger off before contact rather than hoping for a miracle at the door.

The crosshair becomes customizable — and shareable via code

This is the most anticipated quality-of-life feature in years. 42.3 introduces a full crosshair customization system, with a wide range of options.

Even better: PC players now have access to setting-sharing codes. In practice, a player's configuration — yours, or a pro player's — can be shared and imported without going through a screenshot and twenty minutes of manual copying.

Our advice for the week: don't look for the "optimal" crosshair. Adjust one that stays readable on Miramar's bright backgrounds as well as Vikendi's dark areas — that's the only criterion that really matters in a match. A thin, colored crosshair beats a pretty one nine times out of ten.

The settings menu has also been overhauled, with side navigation and reset buttons per section. A small detail, but one that keeps you from breaking everything while trying to fix a single setting.

Map rotation now follows your regional habits

The rotation applied in 42.3 is based on map preferences measured by region between June 1 and July 28, 2026.

This is a point worth understanding rather than just experiencing: the available selection isn't the same everywhere in the world, and it shifts from one update to the next based on what the local community is actually playing. If a map you enjoy disappears from your queue, it's not a global editorial decision — it reflects the past two months on your server.

Practical takeaway: the most effective way to keep a map in rotation is to play it during the measurement window.

New summer Survivor Pass

Update 42.3 launches a new Survivor Pass with a summer theme, accompanied by a new weapon skin. The details of its progression are published in the August store announcement.

A common-sense reminder for those buying the passes: a pass pays off over the course of the season, not in its final weeks. If you're on the fence, the decision should be made now, not in September.

Crates removed from the store, with compensation

Several crates are leaving the store with this update. Affected players receive compensation in G-Coins ranging from 180 to 1,950, depending on the item.

Be sure to check your balance after the update: this compensation doesn't come with any persistent notification and sometimes ends up forgotten for months.

POBG: a mini-game for maintenance windows

A minor but fun addition: update 42.3 adds POBG, an offline mini-game playable during maintenance windows. A direct response to a recurring annoyance — this morning's eight-and-a-half-hour downtime, for example, would have been a perfect use case.

The Playgrounds editor gets richer

The editor gains a team selection interface and status boards. For creators of community modes, these are two building blocks that were sorely missing from match management — we've detailed how the PUBG: Playgrounds hub works in a dedicated guide.

The schedule to remember

  • August 12, 2:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. (Paris time): maintenance and PC rollout;
  • August 20, 3:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. (Paris time): console rollout.

Console players therefore have eight days to prepare: until then, vehicle shooting remains as it was, and it's worth making the most of it while the current bearings still hold.

Frequently asked questions

Why was vehicle shooting weakened?
Drive-bys had become too profitable a tool without any real drawback — a passenger could interrupt a heal or finish off an opponent at full speed with no real risk. Update 42.3 rebalances the mechanic by imposing increasing spread with speed, amplified recoil, and the requirement to fully lean out before firing.
How should I adapt my rotation with these changes?
Slow down before engaging a dug-in opponent — since the spread penalty is tied to speed, a clear deceleration restores accuracy. For aggressive rotations, prefer dropping off the passenger before contact rather than relying on shots fired from the vehicle.
How do I use crosshair sharing codes?
You can now export your configuration or that of a pro player via a code, then import it directly into the settings without manually copying each value. This is available on PC starting with update 42.3.
When will consoles receive update 42.3?
Consoles will have to wait until August 20 between 3:00 AM and 11:00 AM Paris time. Console players therefore have a week to still enjoy vehicle shooting as it was before the changes.
Why is map rotation changing by region?
The selection is based on preferences measured locally between June 1 and July 28. If a map disappears, it reflects what your regional community was actually playing during those two months, not a global editorial decision.

Key takeaways

  • Shooting from a moving vehicle becomes significantly less reliable with combined spread and recoil penalties.
  • Squads will now need to slow down before engaging or drop off the front passenger before contact rather than relying on drive-bys.
  • Crosshair customization now comes with sharing codes, allowing configurations to be imported in a few clicks without manual copying.
  • Map rotation now adjusts based on regional preferences measured over two months, rather than a global editorial choice.
  • A new summer Survivor Pass and the POBG mini-game during maintenance round out the PC update on August 12.
