In brief

In Outbound, adopting a dog is a key step to enhance your adventure. You can pick up your canine companion at the Paws and Whiskers lodge located on the Coast, then train it to help you carry items and gather resources during your explorations.

In Outbound, discovering the world is even more fun with a canine companion by your side. Here's how to adopt a dog, and everything you need to know about it.

How to adopt a dog in Outbound

To acquire a dog, you need to head to the Paws and Whiskers lodge, a location you can only discover after reaching The Coast, your second unlocked map. Here are the steps to follow:

  1. Get the level II pickaxe blueprint: this will allow you to reach previously inaccessible areas.
  2. Visit the cluttered tunnel: located in the northeast corner of the map, it's difficult to access and requires a van upgrade to climb its slopes.
  3. Use your upgraded pickaxe: inside the tunnel, use the pickaxe to clear the rocks blocking the entrance.

After following these steps, you'll be able to drive the van into the tunnel and access the coastal area, where the lodge is located.

Exploring the coastal area

Once you arrive at The Coast, follow the path that winds into the woods. At its end, you'll see a stunning coastal area. On your right, a large wooden sign will announce the entrance to the Paws and Whiskers lodge. Simply head down the path to the small pet shop located at the back.

In the yard, you'll see several dogs. Approach them and choose the companion that appeals to you most. As soon as you select a dog, a button will appear next to it with the option "Choose a companion". Choose the dog you want to adopt, give it a name, and confirm to adopt it. There you go, you're now the happy owner of a canine companion!

The different dog breeds

In Outbound, you have four dog breeds available. Although their coat and eye colors vary, their capabilities are identical. Here's what awaits you:

  • Dog 1 : Brown coat, brown eyes.
  • Dog 2 : Black coat, green eyes.
  • Dog 3 : White coat, blue eyes.
  • Dog 4 : Spotted coat, amber eyes.

Note

Choosing a name is also important since it's permanent, so take your time thinking of a name you like.

How many dogs can you have in Outbound?

Each player can only own one dog at a time in Outbound. But if you're playing in a group, each member can have their own dog. So if there are four of you in a group, you'll have four dogs!

The benefits of having a dog in Outbound

Your dog is able to carry items for you, thereby increasing your storage capacity during your runs. By spending time with him, you'll also be able to train him to help you pick up items or bring them back to your van. You can obviously feed him, and like any good pup, he loves being petted...

Your dog's good health is essential for him to help you as best as possible, so make sure he always has some food available. Spend time playing with him to keep his morale up, and train him whenever possible, as this will allow you to unlock new skills.
