Monster Hunter Wilds: the guide to update 1.042 — 25 event quests finally playable offline, prologue demo and price cut
In brief
Monster Hunter Wilds update 1.042 finally unlocks the game's 25 event quests offline, removing the connection requirement that had been paralyzing a significant part of the endgame. At the same time, Capcom is rolling out a free prologue demo on August 5 and permanently lowering the game's price starting August 6.
Capcom rolled out version 1.042.00.00 of Monster Hunter Wilds on Tuesday, August 4, 2026 at 2:30 AM UTC, or 4:30 AM French time. On paper, it's a technical update with no new monster or new weapon. In practice, it fixes one of the most persistent complaints leveled at the game since launch: the requirement to be online to access event quests.
From now on, the 25 event quests and challenge quests currently available can be launched offline. No connection, no online subscription on console, no dependence on server status. For a game where a significant part of the endgame runs through these quests, that's no small detail.
This guide covers what the update actually changes, the fixes that concern you depending on your weapon, and the two announcements that come with it: the free prologue demo on August 5 and the permanent price drop on August 6.

The shift to offline: what it actually changes
Capcom's official patch notes are explicit: "The 25 Event Quests and Challenge Quests currently available, which previously required an internet connection to accept, can now be played offline." Three of them are named specifically:
- Special Assignment: Slay the Gogmazios;
- Liberating Solitude;
- Event: The Dream Steps.
There's also a special case: the time-limited event quest "Doctor's Orders" — the hunt for the 10★ Alpha Rompopolo — which becomes permanent and also joins the batch of offline quests. A limited-time quest turning into permanent content is rare for Capcom, and it's good news for everyone who missed its original window.
Why does this matter? Because as things stood, a console player without an online subscription simply couldn't access some of the high-rank content they had already paid for. A PC player on the move with an unstable connection was in the same bind. Farming a Gogmazios, currently one of the main sources of endgame gear, was made conditional on a factor entirely outside the game itself.
A small quality-of-life addition alongside this: the event quest list at the Quest Counter has been reorganized so that currently available quests move to the top of the list. Anyone who was scrolling blindly will appreciate this.
How to take advantage of it right away
If you're jumping back into the game after several weeks away, here's the priority order we recommend.
First, check the event quest calendar. Capcom stresses this point in its notes, and for good reason: not all quests are active permanently. Going offline doesn't make quests available forever, it only removes the connection requirement for the ones currently on offer.
Next, lock in the Gogmazios. Special Assignment: Slay the Gogmazios is the heaviest quest in the batch, and the one that feeds into the game's highest gear tiers, particularly for upgraded Artian weapons. With no connection requirement, you can finally farm it solo at your own pace, with support hunters, instead of waiting around for a group.
Then move on to "On Medical Orders." Now that it's permanent, it's no longer urgent — but a 10★ alpha Rompopolo remains a profitable and quick hunt, ideal for short farming cycles.
Finally, the challenge quests. These stand apart from regular event quests: fixed equipment, a timer, a leaderboard. The Free Challenge Quest "Supremacy Alpha Arkveld", which rewards the "Arkveld: Proof of Mastery" accessory, is the one with the most symbolic value — and its animation bug has just been fixed (see below).
The fixes that affect you
The list is short but well targeted. A few entries deserve attention:
Sword and Shield: a trap bug fixed
This is the most important fix for affected players. Until now, with the weapon drawn, it was impossible to place a trap via a radial menu shortcut immediately after activating Focus Mode with the Sword and Shield. For a weapon whose identity rests precisely on versatility in the heat of action — placing a trap without sheathing is one of its long-standing selling points — this was an annoying gameplay snag. It's now fixed.
Multiplayer: the "Resonance II" stacking issue repaired
A technical fix, but one with real consequences in group hunts. Previously, a player who benefited from the effects of "Additional Guard" or "Convergence" boosted by a teammate's "Resonance II" set bonus skill could no longer enjoy the normal versions of these effects once the boost wore off. In short: playing with an ally equipped with Resonance II penalized you past a certain point. This behavior has been fixed.
Monsters: Guardian Thunder Anjanath and Supremacy Alpha Arkveld
Two visual and readability corrections. The stray textures on the head of the Guardian Thunder Anjanath are gone. More usefully: on certain attacks by the Supremacy Alpha Arkveld, effects meant to spread in four directions could be unpredictably deflected by the terrain. In a fight at this level, where survival hinges on reading the telegraphs, this was far from cosmetic.
Technical: DLSS and audio
Capcom announces measures against stuttering when a framerate limit is active and NVIDIA DLSS is enabled — a long-reported issue on PC. The music and sound effects that sometimes failed to trigger have also been fixed, as has the animation of the "Arkveld: Proof of Mastery" accessory, which used to freeze under heavy system load after drawing a weapon.
Graphics drivers: recommended versions
Capcom specifies the versions to install for the best stability on Steam:
- NVIDIA GeForce: 581.57 or newer;
- AMD Radeon: 25.9.1 or newer.
A warning not to ignore: Capcom notes that issues have been identified with AMD Radeon drivers version 25.10.2 and above. If you're on Radeon and the game has been misbehaving since a recent driver update, you've probably found your culprit.
Update size
About 3.5 GB on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam. Expect closer to 5.5 GB total on Steam if you've installed the high-definition texture pack.
The free prologue demo arrives August 5
This is the other part of the announcement, and it targets a different audience: those who haven't taken the plunge yet.
The free Prologue Demo is scheduled for August 5, 2026 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC — the day after the update, which is precisely what sets the stage for it. Its features:
- it covers the prologue up to the end of the mission that leads you to the forest;
- it gives access to full character creation;
- it offers all 14 weapon types: Great Sword, Long Sword, Sword and Shield, Dual Blades, Hammer, Hunting Horn, Lance, Gunlance, Insect Glaive, Charge Blade, Switch Axe, Heavy Bowgun, Light Bowgun, and Bow;
- its content is identical to that of the full game, not a stripped-down version for demonstration purposes.
The condition you absolutely need to know for save data transfer: Capcom's notes are unambiguous — you must launch the full game with no save data from the full version already present. In other words, if you already own Monster Hunter Wilds and have played it, the transfer from the demo won't work.
It's a logical constraint, but it has a practical corollary: don't recommend the demo to a friend who has just bought the game and created their hunter. The correct order is demo first, purchase second.
On a broader level, a demo that offers all 14 weapons is an excellent entry point. Weapon choice has historically been the number one hurdle for new Monster Hunter players; being able to try them all, for free, before committing solves a real accessibility problem.

The August 6 price cut
Capcom is pairing all this with a permanent price cut on the base game starting August 6, 2026, along with new bundles including additional content. Exact prices vary by storefront and region: check directly on Steam, the PlayStation Store, or the Microsoft Store on the day.
The timeline is perfectly clear: update on the 4th, free demo on the 5th, price cut on the 6th. Capcom is orchestrating a three-day acquisition push, and taking event quests offline is part of that — a new player who buys the game in August won't feel like they're accessing a truncated catalog when playing offline.
So what about the content?
Let's be clear: this update brings no new monster, no new weapon, no new area. Monster Hunter Wilds' content ceiling remains what was set by the last major update, and the next real milestone is still the Ascendance expansion, expected in 2027.
Update 1.042 is therefore exactly what it claims to be: an infrastructure and quality-of-life update, paired with a commercial push. It won't bring back a veteran who has already finished their optimal build. But it removes a real point of friction for everyone else — and for a game still aiming for a long career, that's probably more useful than one more monster.
