In brief

Cayo Perico Survival imposes three intense waves with eight unique types of undead and rules radically different from classic survivals: masked radar, disabled climbing, poisoned water, and four zones that follow one another. The weekly challenge is validated as soon as the third round ends, earning you GTA$100,000 and an exclusive t-shirt, with no bonus multiplier this week.

This week's GTA Online weekly challenge, active until Wednesday, August 12, 2026, fits in one line: survive three waves in Cayo Perico Survival. Up for grabs are GTA$100,000 and the Noise Rockstar Logo Aged t-shirt. There's no need to go all the way through the activity: clearing the end of the third round is enough to trigger both rewards.

Let's say it right away, Rockstar hasn't attached any multiplier to this survival mode this week. The bonuses for the week of August 6 to 12 are elsewhere: 2x on Cayo Perico Assault, 2x on On My Yacht, 3x on Community Series Missions and 2x on the first completion of the Cayo Perico Heist finale. So the appeal of this survival mode lies entirely in the challenge's flat reward — and in the fact that it only requires three rounds out of ten.

Still, this isn't an ordinary survival mode. Released on August 28, 2025 as an extension of the "Dirty Money, Clean Fun" update, it drops the single arena of classic survival modes: four zones follow one another, eight families of undead take turns, and several usual game rules are simply disabled. Here's how it works.

Where to launch Cayo Perico Survival

Three entry points lead to the mode:

  • from the in-game phone, in the playlists: the Cayo Perico series includes the survival mode and can be launched from anywhere on the map;
  • from the map, via the palm tree icon located south of Los Santos, near the international airport and the docks;
  • from the Pause menu, under Rockstar Created Jobs, Survival category.

The mode supports 1 to 4 players and works very well solo: no one steals your weapon pickups, and you alone decide the pace of repositioning. With four players, though, clearing waves goes noticeably faster, which matters if you're running multiple sessions in a row for the collection rewards.

The rules this mode changes

Even before the first wave, four changes weigh heavily on how you play:

  • The radar and health bar are hidden. They only reappear when you open the weapon wheel: get in the habit of checking it regularly, it's the only way to know where you stand.
  • Climbing is disabled and ladders are blocked off. Since the undead have no ranged weapons or climbing ability, Rockstar has closed off every unassailable position: camping on a rooftop is not an option.
  • The water is poisoned. Any body of water drains health very quickly, which rules out swimming away — even when the horde pushes you toward the beach.
  • Two health kits per zone, not one more, and they don't respawn. Save them for the last round of each sector.

The setting also changes, which is the real novelty compared to the Ludendorff cemetery survival mode. The start takes place in El Rubio's fortified compound, near a crashed Maverick. According to community findings, players then board a Stafford after the second wave — heading to the Main Dock or the crop fields depending on the map variant drawn —, then a Vetir after the fourth wave to reach West Beach, and finally a Squaddie after the seventh wave to finish at North Dock.

The eight undead types and how to counter them

This is the real content of the mode, and it's where playthroughs come to a halt. Each family has a boosted health pool and a specific ability. Three of them carry an official name in Rockstar's French news feed — conquistador, panther tamer, duplicator — while the others are identified by their behavior.

TypeWhat it doesHow to kill it
ConquistadorArmored skeleton wielding a musket, fires from range.Completely immune to bullets and explosions. Only melee attacks bring it down.
Panther TamerConstantly running, it keeps spawning panthers around itself without stopping.Absolute priority target: taking it down instantly kills every panther it has spawned.
DuplicatorSplits into two upon each death, up to five times. A single one can fill the whole screen.Kill it while it's still alone, or push through the whole chain: eliminating the original once it reaches its final phase removes the remaining clones.
ArmoredCovered in thick ballistic armor. Also comes in a flaming or explosive variant.Highly resistant to firearms: explosives are required, along with several direct hits in the later rounds.
ExplosiveCharges at you and triggers an energy pulse on contact — or upon death.Take it down from a distance, never in reaction to it. Don't finish it off in melee.
MageStays still and generates clouds of toxic gas around players using its staff.Easy to aim at since it doesn't move, but it drives you out of cover: deal with it as soon as it locks onto your position.
Undead DJMotionless behind its turntables, it slows down players and speeds up the undead.If it's the last enemy of the wave, it forces players to dance toward it before blowing up: keep your distance and shoot.
Possessed AnimalBoar, deer, coyote, or panther, only on certain rounds. Its attacks cause bleeding.Fast and low to the ground: the shotgun remains the most reliable answer.

Three shooting priorities follow from this. The panther tamer first, because it keeps feeding the wave continuously as long as it's standing. The duplicator next, as long as it hasn't started its chain of splits yet. The mage last, as soon as it stops you from holding a position. The conquistador, on the other hand, isn't handled with a gun: pull out the baseball bat, take the musket hit, and strike.

Clearing the three-wave challenge cleanly

The first rounds take place entirely inside El Rubio's compound, before the first vehicle trip. This is the easiest portion of the mode: few special types, weapon pickups scattered around the grounds, and cover angles everywhere.

The efficient routine:

  • Sweep the compound as soon as the mission starts, before the pressure builds, to pick up everything lying around. The combat shotgun and the assault shotgun handle most of the close-quarters fighting, the combat MG and the special carbine hold the corridors, and the compact grenade launcher and the RPG should be saved for armored enemies. Molotov cocktails and grenades are also scattered around.
  • Immediately locate the two health kits in the area and leave them untouched until the third wave.
  • Keep a baseball bat on you at all times. It's your only answer to the conquistador and it doesn't use any ammo.
  • Don't stay pinned against the same wall. The mage's gas and the explosives' blast radius specifically punish static positions, and with climbing disabled you lose your usual fallback plan.

Once the third wave is over, the challenge is complete: you can leave the session without any regrets. This is probably the least time-consuming weekly challenge of the entire summer event, since it requires no preparation, no property investment, and no teammates.

Pushing to wave 10 and beyond

Survival rewards aren't fixed: the mode pays out 15 mission points (JP) and an amount of GTA$ and RP that increases with the time spent on the island. Going all the way therefore mainly makes sense if you're chasing RP.

After the tenth wave, the host decides: take off aboard the Velum parked on the runway, or switch to endless waves in one of the four zones already visited. Choosing to flee doesn't end the danger — Manchez Scouts and Squaddies spawn at the exit of the last zone, and you'll need to cross the island, running over everything in your path, to reach the plane.

Three collectible rewards are tied to the mode, worth 800 RP each. They appear in sequence in the stats, in the rewards section, under the "Dirty Money and Clean Business" category:

  • survive 15 waves — since the counter has to hold within a single session, you'll necessarily have to go through the endless waves;
  • kill at least one of each type of special undead;
  • perform a dance action for 60 seconds while an undead DJ is active.

The "I Survived Cayo Perico" T-shirt, meanwhile, is unlocked from your very first played session, regardless of how many waves you clear. The "The Buccaneer" outfit and its 100,000 GTA$ bonus, however, were tied to the September 2025 launch window: don't count on it today.

While you're on the island

Since you're already there, Cayo Perico Heist Assault pays double until August 12. It's a rivalry mode for 8 to 30 players split into two teams, unlocked from rank 1. The attackers successively hack three pairs of radars, then take the compound, head down to the basement, and maintain the data upload until the end; the defenders have just one objective, disarm what's been hacked and hold out until the timer runs out. On the attacking side, items marked with a dollar sign on the map and bonus objectives significantly boost the final payout: don't rush headlong toward the main objective if your team is holding the ground.

Two final points. The Cayo Perico survival is permanent content: it won't disappear on August 13, only the paid challenge expires. And if you're only after the GTA$100,000, there's no need to gear up before heading out: the mode provides all the weaponry on site, and the three required rounds are played in a single zone. The rest — the eight types of undead, the four sectors, the endless waves — is there for the mode itself, not for your wallet.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to complete the three-wave challenge?
The first three rounds wrap up relatively quickly, generally between 15 and 25 minutes depending on your skill level and the number of players. It's one of the least time-consuming challenges of the week.
What's the best weapon build for Cayo Perico Survival?
Combat shotgun and assault shotgun for most engagements, combat MG and special carbine for corridors, compact grenade launcher and RPG for armored enemies. Add Molotov cocktails, grenades, and a non-negotiable baseball bat for the conquistador.
Why is the water poisoned and how do you avoid it?
Rockstar chose this mechanic to prevent swimming escapes to the beach and force frontal combat. Stay on dry land and let the undead chase you there, never toward the water.
Is Survival better played solo or in a group?
Solo, you control the pace and don't have to share weapon pickups. With four players, waves clear much faster, which matters if you're chaining multiple runs or aiming for RP. Choose based on your goal.
What changes after the tenth wave?
The host can choose to flee by Velum or switch to infinite waves in one of the four zones. Manchez Scouts and Squaddies appear at the exit, and the danger persists even after you flee.

Key takeaways

  • The panther tamer is your absolute priority target: eliminating him instantly kills all his big cats and clears the wave
  • Keep your baseball bat for the conquistador, the only enemy immune to bullets that you can only stop in melee
  • Only touch the two health kits in each zone during the third round, as they never respawn
  • Climbing and closed rooftops force you to fight on the ground: keep moving constantly to dodge the mage's gas and the explosives' shockwaves
  • Solo or with four players, three waves are enough to complete the challenge, but pushing on to wave 10 is mainly worth it for RP and progressive GTA$
