The Sims 4 has generated a lot of buzz around its love stories, and for good reason: finding a soulmate and then saying "I do" remains one of players' favorite rites of passage. From meeting to first kiss

Before marriage, there's romance. Romantic relationships in The Sims 4 are built brick by brick, across two separate bars: friendship and romance. There's no skipping steps: your Sim must first build a solid friendship before flirty interactions can unlock their full potential.

Once the ice is broken with some small talk, head to the Romance category in the social menu. Interactions like "Compliment," "Flirt," or "Charm" fill up the pink bar, as long as both Sims are in a favorable mood. A playful, happy, or flirty Sim sees their chances of success skyrocket, while an angry or embarrassed Sim risks a resounding rejection.

A little field advice: always start with a simple friendly interaction before attempting to flirt. A Sim approached directly with "Flirt" often refuses, and a single misstep can freeze the romantic relationship for several hours of gameplay.

When the pink bar reaches about two-thirds full, the "First Kiss" interaction becomes available. This is the real turning point: a successful kiss unlocks the "Ask to Be Boyfriend/Girlfriend" option, which officializes the relationship status and opens the door to the next steps.

Making it official: moving in together

Being a couple isn't enough to put a ring on it, but it helps enormously. Once the relationship is stable, you can propose to your partner that you take the big step: sharing a roof. The "Ask to Move In" option is found in the Romance menu. Depending on the partner's situation (family, dependent children, current housing), the game offers to merge households, contribute funds to the household, or bring in only certain members.

Moving in together makes everything that follows much easier: the couple shares meals, sleeps in the same bed, and naturally sees their relationship grow. This is also when the whims system starts spontaneously suggesting engagement, an excellent indicator that the relationship is ripe.

The marriage proposal: how it works

Now, on to getting down on one knee. For a successful proposal, several boxes need to be checked:

• Both Sims are in an established relationship, with a romance bar close to maximum.
• The proposer is in a positive mood, ideally playful or happy.
• No recent negative event (argument, cheating, a rejected kiss) has clouded the relationship in the past few hours.

Then select the soulmate and, from the Romance menu, choose "Propose Marriage." If the conditions are met, a small romantic animation triggers: the Sim gets down on one knee, pulls out the ring, and the partner accepts. Both Sims officially become engaged, a status that unlocks new interactions such as "Talk About Wedding" or the ability to schedule the event from the calendar.

Quick wedding or grand ceremony?

The base game offers two radically different paths, and the choice mostly depends on what you're in the mood for.

The quick wedding

Also called a “Vegas wedding” by the community, it takes just one click. Once engaged, select your partner and choose “Get Married Right Now.” No arch, no guests, no preparation: the two Sims exchange vows on the spot, and the status changes to “Married.” Ideal for shy couples, special runs (100 Baby Challenge, legacy challenge), or simply when you're playing without wanting to organize a whole reception.

The full ceremony

The “traditional” version goes through the phone: the Host a Social Event icon, then Wedding. The game asks you for the date, the location (home or a public lot), the guests, and displays a checklist of objectives to complete in order to earn a bronze, silver, or gold medal. A gold wedding awards gifts (furniture, appliances) deposited directly into the household inventory.

Pulling off a successful ceremony: the winning checklist

On the lot, a ten-Sim-hour countdown is displayed, with the tasks to complete shown in the upper left corner of the screen. The classic objectives for a successful wedding are as follows:

• Place a wedding arch — this is the mandatory object needed to start the ceremony.
• Place a tiered cake, previously bought or baked, then decorate it for the wedding.
• Gather the guests in front of the arch and start “Exchange Vows.”
• Cut the cake and serve slices to keep the guests' attention.
• Follow up with the first dance and the bouquet toss.
• Thank the guests to multiply the success points.

A caterer, a bartender, and a musician can be hired for a few hundred Simoleons each. They make life easier: no more need to manage food, drinks, or ambiance, so your Sim can focus on the key interactions with guests.

Watch out for unexpected mishaps: guests leaving too early, an argument between two family members, or a Sim falling asleep can cost you precious stars. Provide plenty of restrooms, self-serve food, and avoid overly cramped lots where Sims bump into each other.

The My Wedding Stories pack: Tartosa and traditions

Released on February 23, 2022, the The Sims 4 My Wedding Stories pack expands on every stage and introduces a new world: Tartosa, a small coastal town with the feel of an Italian riviera. There you'll find a florist, a bakery, and a formalwear shop, as well as a new “Wedding Venue” lot trait that can be placed on your own builds to host weddings.

Pre-wedding events

The pack adds several celebrations that mark the engagement period:

• Bachelor/Bachelorette Party with a host and up to seven guests, plus a list of optional activities.
• Engagement Dinner to officially introduce the families the night before the big day.
• Family Reunion that can host up to fifteen guests, with a buffet and drink fountain.
• Welcome Dinner, designed for guests coming from far away the night before the ceremony.

Roles and traditions on the big day

Once the ceremony is planned, you can assign specific roles to your loved ones: up to two witnesses, one officiant, a ring bearer and a flower girl or boy. Each Sim must accept individually, and a resentful friend may refuse — make sure to nurture your relationships beforehand to avoid last-minute hurt feelings.

As for traditions, the pack offers a good dozen optional activities: exchanging vows, speeches, cake cutting, tea ceremony (a nod to Chinese weddings), rice throwing, bubbles, first kiss, first dance, toast, petal aisle… You only select the ones that fit your story, none are mandatory.

Storytelling tip: the tea ceremony and additional outfit colors let you stage weddings inspired by Asian or Indian cultures. It's a chance to tell more diverse stories than the classic Western white dress.

Tartosa Town Hall

Don't feel like organizing everything? Tartosa Town Hall is open from 9am to 6pm and offers a quick civil wedding, somewhere between the base game's express marriage and the full ceremony. Ideally, you can go from town hall to a small beach reception, without having to manage the entire checklist logistics.

After the "I do": divorce, remarriage and vow renewal

The Sims 4 knows all too well that couple life isn't always smooth sailing. If the relationship deteriorates — too many arguments, an affair, incompatible traits —, you can start a separation via the "Divorce" interaction in the Romance menu. The partner leaves the household, keeps a share of the funds depending on the situation, and becomes single again. The friendship, though, doesn't disappear automatically: nothing prevents a post-divorce friendship, or even a reconciliation a few seasons later.

Nothing prevents remarriage either. A divorced or widowed Sim can go through the whole process again: flirting, engagement, new ceremony. The My Wedding Stories pack even adds a vow renewal, a dedicated event for already married couples who want to celebrate a new milestone in their life together, with the same staging as a first wedding.
