Are Sprites Disabled in Ranked Fortnite? Override Explained

Fortnite's message of the day, updated on Friday 21 August 2026 at 22:59 UTC, contains one line the season notes never put front and centre, and it changes things for everyone in ranked play:

"Sprites will now appear in Ranked too, with abilities disabled to maintain even competition."

That is two pieces of information in one sentence, and they need separating carefully, because they do not say the same thing. Sprites — the French client calls them esprits — do appear in Ranked. But their abilities are switched off there. You can run into them, extract them, collect them; you cannot count on them to win a fight.

What the text says exactly, and what it does not say

Here is the full passage of the message of the day, headed "Keep Collecting and Mastering":

"There are all new Sprites to discover and collect! Extract and equip them for game-changing Sprite Powers, level them up, and keep growing the Collection in Override. Sprites will now appear in Ranked too, with abilities disabled to maintain even competition."

Three verbs structure the loop in public matches: extract, equip, level up. A Sprite is not picked up like a floor weapon: it is extracted, then equipped, then levelled.

Sprites are not a Season 4 invention: Chapter 7 Season 3 already had them, and we devoted a guide to them alongside the boss Mythics. On the other hand — and this matters, so that no false certainties spread — Epic's text says nothing at all about the following:

• It does not say how many Sprites Season 4 has, nor which ones.
• It does not say whether extraction and upgrading work in Ranked, or only the spawning.
• It does not say whether collection progress made in Ranked carries over to your profile.
• Nor does it say whether "abilities disabled" covers every effect a Sprite has, or only its active powers.

Any categorical claim on those four points, today, is extrapolation. We are sticking to the official sentence.

Why "abilities disabled" is good news in Ranked

The justification comes from Epic itself: "to maintain even competition". Reading it in reverse is instructive. A system of random items granting game-changing powers poses a structural problem in ranked play: two players of equal skill do not finish a match with the same arsenal, and the gap depends not on their play but on their drops.

The trade-off is clear: keep the collection, remove the advantage. In practice, for a ranked player, time spent hunting a Sprite during a ranked match is time that returns no immediate combat gain. If your goal for the session is to climb, Sprite looting goes back to being what it always should have been in competitive play: a secondary objective, handled when the zone and the survivor count allow it.

Gifting the Battle Pass unlocks a style on both accounts

The other novelty in the message of the day concerns gifting. The official text:

"Gifting the Override Battle Pass unlocks the Peril Peak Mali Style and matching accessories for both the gifter and the friend receiving it!"

The wording is worth pausing on, because it is more generous than usual. It is not "the recipient gets a bonus", it is both accounts: the one paying and the one receiving. And the unlock covers not just an outfit style but the style plus the matching accessories.

Mali is one of the Outfits introduced with Chapter 7 Season 4; "Peril Peak" is an alternate Style for it. As always with gifting offers, Epic publishes no end date in the message of the day: nothing guarantees the mechanic lasts the whole season.

Override, in one paragraph

For context, here is the season's welcome message:

"Break the rules. Change the game! Activate Overrides to switch up the game and explore areas inspired by gaming legends like Sonic, Tetris, and Pac-Man as the future of the Island unfolds."

Worth noting: Tails is not an Outfit but a Sidekick — the category the game describes as follows: "This hologram of Tails has you seeing double." Tails Pad, meanwhile, sits among the season's Back Blings.
