In brief

Year of the Fullbacks turns your fullbacks into 97-rated centre-backs for free via four straightforward matches. The Evolution caps out at 97 no matter the starting point, which makes 88-90 cards far more appealing than investing in a 94. Watch out for the playstyle filters, though: they knock out the best FUTTIES cards of the cycle.

The Evolutions tab in EA Sports FC 26 is currently hosting the best defensive operation of the entire FUTTIES cycle, and it doesn't cost a single credit. Year of the Fullbacks takes a fullback, adds the center-back position, and grants +8 overall rating along with twenty points across eleven defensive and physical attributes. No consumables to unlock via SBC, no FC Points to spend: four matches are all it takes.

This is the kind of Evolution that solves a very concrete problem at the end of a cycle. After piling up 97- and 98-rated cards up front, the center-back pairing has become the weak point of most squads: good special center-backs go for very high prices on the Transfer Market, and defensive Icons remain reserved for those with a million credits to spare. Here, an 89-rated fullback you already have in your club comes out the other end as a 97-rated wall.

The question is who to put into it. The entry requirements rule out a good number of interesting cards, and a rating cap makes certain choices completely pointless. Here's the breakdown, with deadlines noted as of August 6, 2026.

Exactly what Year of the Fullbacks delivers

The Evolution has four levels. Each one is completed the same way: play a match in Squad Battles on Semi-Pro difficulty or above — or in Rush, Rivals, Champions, or a live event — with the player undergoing the Evolution on the pitch. No win required, no clean sheet needed either. It's a purely mechanical grind, completable in a single evening.

LevelRequirementCumulative bonuses
11 match with the Evolution player+8 overall rating, +4 weak foot, +20 reactions, jumping, strength and aggression
21 match+20 composure, sliding tackle and stamina
31 match+20 interceptions and heading accuracy
41 match+20 defensive awareness and standing tackle

In total: addition of the center-back position, +8 overall rating, +4 weak foot, and +20 across eleven attributes. FUT.GG puts the net gain at just over 200 attribute points once the 99 cap is applied to already-high stats. Since the CB position is added to the card rather than simulated, it fills a center-back slot without the repositioning penalty in the Chemistry calculation.

The entry requirements, and the trap that rules out half the club

  • Position LB or RB — natural center-backs are excluded
  • Overall rating: 95 maximum
  • Total number of positions: 5 maximum
  • PlayStyles: 10 maximum
  • PlayStyles+: 4 maximum

The real filter isn't the overall rating, it's the double limit on PlayStyles. The top-tier FUTTIES cards and recent Icons very regularly cross the ten PlayStyles threshold, and any card that's already been through one or two Evolutions has a good chance of having exceeded four PlayStyles+. Before opening the Transfer Market, open your club and sort through it: the ideal candidate is often already sitting there, and sometimes it's older than you'd think.

Second point, less spectacular but costly: a card entered into an Evolution becomes permanently untradeable. Don't sacrifice a fullback you were planning to sell before the shift to FC 27, and don't enter a card you're already using as a starter in its original position either: it will be locked up for the duration of the four matches and will come out with a center-back profile, not an attacking wing-back one.

Which fullback to sign: the 97 cap changes everything

This is the detail that most "best players" lists leave out. The displayed bonus is +8, but the final rating caps at 97. FUT.GG cites the example of Filippo Terracciano, who goes from 90 to 97: he only gains seven points. In other words, from 89 overall onwards, everyone ends up in the same place. Signing a 94-rated card to get exactly the 97 that an 89-rated card would have given you is throwing away the price difference for nothing.

The profile to look for, then, is a fullback around 88-90, tall, fast, with defensive PlayStyles and a decent passing base. Destructoid, which published its selection on 5 August 2026, highlights Theo Hernández and João Cancelo in their Glory Hunters versions, Denzel Dumfries, Alphonso Davies, Jules Koundé in his Team of the Year version, Patrick Dorgu and Jayden Oosterwolde, as well as the fullback Icons Paolo Maldini, Cafu and Lilian Thuram.

Two sensible caveats about this list. First, fullback Icons are expensive and frequently come with too many PlayStyle+ to pass the filter: check the card before buying it, not after. Second, a very attacking fullback handles the +20 well but often starts from a laughable heading base. Yet that's precisely the attribute that decides whether your new centre-back can handle crosses. A player with 55 heading ends up at 75: that's not enough for a centre-back. Prioritise starting aggression, strength and heading, as these are the three stats the bonus amplifies best when the base is already decent, and leave pace aside: it isn't boosted by this Evolution.

The deadlines as of 6 August 2026

The counters checked today show around ten days left before submissions close on FUT.GG, and sixteen to seventeen days before full expiry — which places the signing deadline around 16 August and the final closure around 22 August. FUT Mind, meanwhile, showed sixteen days and eleven hours remaining. These trackers are based on in-game data but can be off by an hour or two: the counter shown in the Evolutions tab is the authoritative one, and that's the one to check before starting your first match.

A word on the name. The Evolution is listed under its English name, Year of the Fullbacks, including on the French versions of trackers (FUT Mind, FUTEvolution). If you can't find it by name, identify it by its description, which promises to shift your favourite fullback into the centre with a defence and physicality boost.

What else to wrap up this week

The Evolution ties up a slot for four matches, so it's worth using the time to clear out the rest of your list. The SBCs and active objectives that genuinely deserve your time:

  • 85+ x2 Upgrade — the repeatable SBC that refreshes daily. It's the backbone of fodder production for everything that follows; do it every day without thinking as long as you have club players to clear out.
  • 1 of 3 FUTTIES Team 2 Player Pick — around 29,500 coins based on solutions tracked at FUT Mind, three repeats available, refreshes every two days. It's currently the best coin-to-reward-ceiling ratio among the player pick SBCs.
  • The entry-level FUTTIES player SBCs — Jens Petter Hauge (96) at around 22,750 coins, Thorgan Hazard (96) at around 42,250 coins, Federico Chiesa (96) at around 103,000 coins. Chiesa is the most time-sensitive of the three: it only had three days left on the clock at the time of tracking, compared to five for Hazard and six for Hauge.
  • The free objectives — the Flash FUTTIES Tournament (as listed on FUT.GG) requires completing three out of four challenges in a 3-5-2 formation and rewards a choice of one FUTTIES Team 2 player pick out of two, plus 75 tokens. "Third Time Lucky" offers a choice of one out of four and 100 tokens for five out of six challenges. Zero coins spent in either case.

By contrast, the big Icon SBCs deserve a cold, hard calculation before diving in. The FUTTIES version of Fernando Torres (97) comes in at around 558,000 coins for thirteen challenges, while Eusébio (98) sits at around 555,000 coins for twelve. At that level of spending, in the middle of August and just weeks away from the shift to FC 27, you're locking up the equivalent of several weeks' worth of rewards into a card that will lose all practical value once the next installment launches. If your goal is to comfortably finish out the season rather than collect, the trade-off clearly favors the repeatable player pick SBCs.

What order to tackle it in

The plan fits into two evenings. First step, before any purchase: open your club, filter by LB and RB positions, and check who falls short of ten playstyles and four playstyles+. If a right-back or left-back around 89 already stands out, you don't need to buy anything. Second step, four Squad Battles matches on Semi-Pro with the card in your lineup, which also feeds your weekly score and any ongoing FUTTIES objectives. Only at the third step, once the 97-rated center-back is in place, will you know exactly how many coins you have left to weigh between the player pick SBCs and the Icons.

This Evolution isn't the flashiest one out there right now — it doesn't produce a pink card with triple-digit attacking stats — but it's the only one that fills, for free, the most expensive position to properly kit out in August. In the closing stretch of the cycle, where every coin spent will be gone within weeks, it's exactly the kind of move that should take priority.

Frequently asked questions

How many matches do you actually need to unlock the full Evolution?
Four matches total, one per level. No wins required, no clean sheet objectives: you just need to field the player on the pitch at Semi-Pro or higher (Squad Battles) or online (Rush, Rivals, Champions). It's a pure mechanic you can knock out in one evening.
Why commit an 89-rated card instead of a 94 if they both end up at 97?
Because the final rating cap is 97 regardless of the base card. A 94-rated card costs far more on the market to deliver the exact same result as an 89. It's economically pointless, and FUT.GG proves it with the numbers.
Which fullbacks sail through the playstyle filter without issue?
Theo Hernández (Glory Hunters), João Cancelo (Glory Hunters), Denzel Dumfries, Alphonso Davies, Jules Koundé (Team of the Year), Patrick Dorgu, and Jayden Oosterwolde all check out. Careful though: fullback Icons (Maldini, Cafu, Thuram) often exceed the PlayStyle+ limits, so check before buying.
What's stopping most players from using this Evolution?
The two playstyle limits knock out roughly half of the interesting cards. Any high-end FUTTIES or recent Icon regularly blows past the cap of ten standard PlayStyles or four PlayStyle+. Before hitting the Market, sort through your club — the right candidate is often already sitting there.
How long do I have to commit this Evolution?
Trackers pointed to roughly sixteen to seventeen days from August 6, 2026, putting the commitment deadline around August 16 and full closure around August 22. The countdown in the game's Evolutions tab is the definitive source, so check it before starting your matches.

Key takeaways

  • Four matches with no win condition to turn an 89-90 fullback into a 97-rated centre-back completely free
  • The 97 cap makes it pointless to commit a 94-rated card when an 89 gives you exactly the same end result
  • Playstyle limits automatically rule out top-tier Icons and FUTTIES cards, so check before you buy
  • Prioritise aggression, strength, and basic heading; pace doesn't get a bonus
  • Committing a card makes it permanently untradeable and locks it up for four matches, so don't sacrifice an asset you'd rather flip
