EA Sports FC 26: your j. FUTTIES items come out without a PlayStyle — the Lab, the 4 PlayStyles+ and the 5th consumable

In brief

j. FUTTIES items arrive bare-footed — with no PlayStyle or PlayStyle+. EA is compensating by raising the Evolutions cap to four, and promises a fifth consumable before the event closes. It's up to you to shape your cards in the Lab according to your strategy.

The information appears on the campaign's official page and it explains a lot of disappointments: at EA, "every regular FUTTIES item is released without a PlayStyle or PlayStyle+". The card you've just pulled from a pack or an SBC arrives bare. Its attributes are there, its stars too, but the layer that matters most on the pitch is empty, and it's up to you to add it at the PlayStyles Lab.

In return, EA has loosened the cap during the campaign: the Evolutions limit rises to four PlayStyle+. And the same page announces a fifth PlayStyle+ Evolution consumable "towards the end of the campaign". Here we are: FUTTIES started on July 24, 2026 for an announced duration of four weeks.

One caveat before we go further, because it changes your planning. EA writes "for four weeks" starting from July 24, which brings us to today, Friday, August 21, 2026. But the FUTTIES event published on the game's Steam page carries a window running until August 28, 2026 at 5:00 PM UTC, i.e. 7:00 PM Paris time. The two contradict each other, and EA hasn't settled it. The second is likely a store promotional window, but we can't confirm it: treat this Friday as the last day, and take the extra week as a bonus if it exists.

Why EA ships FUTTIES items without PlayStyle

This isn't an oversight but a design choice, and EA cites two precedents on the same page: FUT Birthday and Football Festival: Path to Glory. The logic is identical each time. Rather than imposing a fixed profile, the publisher delivers a very high-end chassis and lets the player decide its orientation.

The chassis, indeed, is generous. Every FUTTIES item has at least a 5-star skill move or a 5-star Weak Foot — at least one of the two, not necessarily both — and four alternative positions. These two characteristics are locked in as soon as the card is released: they aren't configurable and cost no consumable.

The reasoning is therefore reversed compared to a regular card: you don't ask what the card can do, you decide what you want it to do. With four alternative positions, the same item can end up as a left winger for one player and an attacking midfielder for another.

The PlayStyles Lab, and why the + sign changes everything

A word on the terminology, because it circulates in several forms. EA only writes one name on its FUTTIES page: PlayStyles Lab. This is the screen used to apply a PlayStyle to an item, in both its ordinary version and its enhanced version, identifiable by the + sign. The "PlayStyles Lab+" you'll come across elsewhere isn't a second screen: the publisher doesn't publish that label. What does matter, however, is very real — a PlayStyle+ isn't applied at will, it's spent in the form of a consumable.

This is what gives real value to the PlayStyle+ Evolution consumables distributed during FUTTIES. They're the project's limiting resource: base PlayStyles are easy to find, PlayStyle+ are counted one by one. Your coins and tokens are useless here: everything comes down to consumables.

Four PlayStyle+: the cap that dictates an order of operations

“Raises the Evolution limit to four PlayStyles+”: the official wording deserves a slow read, because it doesn't talk about the card but about Evolutions. Our reading — the publisher doesn't spell it out — is that this is an entry criterion: an Evolution looks at what the player item presented to it already carries and rejects it if it exceeds its tolerance, a tolerance that FUTTIES raises to four PlayStyles+.

If this reading is correct, it results in a counter-intuitive order of operations: Evolutions first, customization second. A card you load into the Lab before presenting it to an Evolution could be refused entry when it would have gone through untouched. The cap itself is non-negotiable.

What remains is distributing the four slots. First fix the card's function, then only commit what serves it. For a finisher, Finesse Shot+, Power Shot+ and Low Driven Shot+ don't stack usefully: they answer three different moves, and applying two of them often means wasting one. It's better to have one PlayStyle+ for striking, one for pace, one for dribbling, and a fourth left open for the fifth consumable, should it arrive.

The fifth consumable: what EA wrote, and what it didn't write

The official statement is deliberately cautious: keep an eye out for a fifth PlayStyle+ Evolution consumable towards the end of the campaign. EA gives no date, no time, and no distribution channel. Nor does it specify whether it will come through an objective, an SBC, or an Evolution open to everyone.

We noted on August 11 that the “The Missing Piece” group delivered this fifth consumable, with a deadline of August 21 at 6:59 pm Paris time. EA's FUTTIES page, however, has never named the source: so take this deadline as the most likely hypothesis rather than a certainty. Either way, the course of action to follow today remains the same: check the Objectives, SBC, and Evolutions tabs before the evening.

And above all, keep an eligible card in reserve. The scenario to avoid is receiving the consumable once all your FUTTIES player items already carry four PlayStyles+: a campaign that closes takes with it whatever hasn't been used.

The Season 10 EVO PS consumable won't save you this weekend

Another source of PlayStyle exists outside of FUTTIES, and it's already open: completing the Season 10 World Tour progression pre-season, meaning reaching level 30 of the standard pass, awards a non-tradeable 82+ x7 Pack and an EVO PS consumable based on Quick Step, capped at 83 OVR.

Two caveats, and they're serious ones. The first concerns this cap: a consumable limited to 83 OVR won't apply to a FUTTIES item, which is almost always well above that. It's meant to refresh a modest card, not your 97-rated striker. The second concerns the date: this reward is part of the transferable rewards and cannot be claimed in FC 26. EA gives two deadlines for it on the same page: its text announces delivery "before October 9, 2026", its table states October 16, 2026. Either way, that's in FC 27 and not this weekend. We've detailed this mechanic elsewhere; the key point here is that it doesn't factor into your decisions today.

Where to find bases to configure

The volume documented by EA sets the pace: the first week of the campaign offered nine item SBCs, including seven FUTTIES items and two FUTTIES ICONS or Heroes. Over a four-week campaign, that represents a continuous flow of usable bases, all delivered blank in terms of PlayStyle.

Don't confuse card rarity with build quality, though. A FUTTIES ICON and a regular FUTTIES item start from the same blank slate: the difference lies in the starting attributes and the number of consumables you're willing to commit. A perfectly configured card is better than three half-equipped ones.

What to do today, Friday, August 21

  1. Take stock of your FUTTIES items and identify those that don't yet have any PlayStyle+ applied.
  2. Run these cards through the Evolutions you're interested in before touching the PlayStyle Lab, so as not to make them ineligible.
  3. Sweep through the Objectives, SBC, and Evolutions tabs today: this is the window EA announced for the fifth PlayStyle+ Evolution consumable.
  4. Keep at least one card whose four slots aren't full, ready to receive this fifth consumable if it drops.
  5. Don't expect anything from the Season 10 EVO PS consumable: capped at 83 OVR and delivered in FC 27 in October 2026 (EA writes "before October 9" in its text and "October 16" in its table).
  6. If the campaign were to run until August 28 as the Steam window suggests, everything above still holds: you'll simply have gained an extra week.

The rule fits in one line: during FUTTIES, a card's value isn't read from its overall rating, it's built in the Lab.

Frequently asked questions

Why do j. FUTTIES items release without a PlayStyle?
It's a deliberate design choice: rather than imposing a fixed profile, EA delivers a top-tier chassis and lets you decide the card's orientation in the Lab. You gain flexibility, but you have to invest the consumables yourself.
What's the difference between a regular PlayStyle and a PlayStyle+?
A regular PlayStyle is easy to come by, while a PlayStyle+ is a rare resource spent as a consumable. That's what makes the PlayStyle+ Evolution consumables handed out during FUTTIES so valuable: they're the real customization lever.
How many PlayStyle+ can I apply to a j. FUTTIES item?
Four maximum during the FUTTIES campaign. EA raised this cap compared to previous campaigns, and a fifth consumable is announced for the end of the campaign, though no date has been confirmed.
In what order should I apply PlayStyles and Evolutions?
Evolutions first, customization second. Loading up a card in the Lab before submitting it to an Evolution risks getting it blocked if it exceeds the PlayStyle+ tolerance. Submit your bare card to Evolutions first, then configure it in the Lab.
Can the Season 10 EVO PS consumable help me with j. FUTTIES items?
No, this consumable is capped at 83 OVR and therefore doesn't apply to j. FUTTIES items, which far exceed that cap. What's more, it won't be distributed until October 2026, well after FUTTIES ends.

Key takeaways

  • Every j. FUTTIES item comes out with no PlayStyle applied, but guarantees at minimum a 5-star skill move or 5-star weak foot and four alternate positions.
  • The PlayStyles Lab is your only tool for configuring the card's orientation — PlayStyle+ consumes limited resources rather than your coins.
  • You have four PlayStyle+ slots available during FUTTIES, which is why it's crucial to prioritize your card's role before applying Evolutions.
  • A fifth PlayStyle+ Evolution consumable is expected to arrive before the campaign ends, though EA hasn't confirmed an official date.
  • The official window closes on August 28, 2026 at 7:00 PM Paris time, though the announced duration is four weeks starting July 24.
