In brief

Clear River Games has announced the re-release of Terranigma in early 2027 for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series, Switch 2, Switch, and PC. Long awaited since 1995, the Quintet classic will feature its original visuals, a physical edition signed by Limited Run Games, and yes, an official French version.

Clear River Games announced on August 24, during the first Pixel Arcadia showcase, the return of Terranigma on consoles and PC in early 2027. Quintet's game had not been rereleased since 1995 due to blocked rights: in 2021, a petition led by character designer Kamui Fujiwara and composer Miyoko Takaoka was already calling for this rerelease.

The operation is being carried out with Square Enix, Enix's successor, and targets PS5, PS4, Xbox Series, Switch 2, Switch and PC, on Steam and GOG. A physical edition is planned: the Steam listing includes Limited Run Games among the publishers. No remake — the original visuals are kept, down to the Enix font of the dialogue boxes — and Fujiwara is providing new illustrations. English, French, German, Spanish and Japanese are among the announced languages.

Not a Western first — a North American one

It is often said that Terranigma never came out in the West. That is only half true. Nintendo published it in Europe from December 19, 1996, in English, then in French in the summer of 1997 — a translation by Julien Bardakoff, his first, years before he named the Pokémon in French. European boxes even shipped a 72-page guide in place of the manual. The one territory left out was North America: Enix had closed its subsidiary there before localization was finished.

For European players this is a homecoming; for North America it is a first. What remains unknown are the exact date, the price, and the contents of this edition.
