In brief

Cost of Hope arrives on August 20 with two major regions and the free 2.0 update that shifts the game to Unreal Engine 5.5.4. Get ready now: check your saves, secure your files, and anticipate the impact on your mods.

Cost of Hope, the first major narrative expansion for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl, launches on August 20, 2026 on PC (Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG), Xbox Series X|S, Xbox Cloud, and PlayStation 5. On the same day, GSC Game World is rolling out update 2.0, free for everyone.

Two and a half weeks, then. And unlike many expansions, this one requires real preparation — not because it's hard to access, but because the question "which save am I going to use" has an answer that commits you for dozens of hours.

What Cost of Hope includes

Two previously locked regions

The expansion opens up two areas that the base game kept closed:

  • The Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant itself (Chernobyl NPP in-game).
  • The Iron Forest.

For a game that carries "Heart of Chornobyl" in its title, access to the power plant is no cosmetic detail. It's the location toward which the entire fiction of the series has been converging since 2007.

A story spanning dozens of hours

GSC is announcing a storyline that the studio describes as massively non-linear, running for dozens of hours. The starting point: a mysterious PDA signal that draws Skif into a new plot, centered on the rising tensions between Duty and Freedom.

This choice of factions is no small thing for series veterans. The conflict between Duty — militaristic, convinced that the Zone must be eradicated — and Freedom — anarchistic, convinced that it must remain open and studied — is the foundational ideological opposition of the series. Bringing it back to the center of an expansion suggests that faction choices will carry real weight here.

The expansion also adds new weapons, new gear, and new enemies.

Update 2.0: the real event for those who won't buy the expansion

The 2.0 update is free and applies to all owners of the base game. Its main contribution is technical but carries significant consequences: it moves the game from Unreal Engine 5.1 to Unreal Engine 5.5.4.

This kind of mid-life engine migration is rare, and for good reason: it's risky. In concrete terms, you can expect gains in stability, memory management, and rendering and scaling technologies — precisely the areas where S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 was criticized most heavily at launch.

The trade-off to anticipate: a major engine version change frequently breaks mods. If your setup relies on a list of modifications, expect to have to recheck everything after August 20, and avoid updating in the middle of a modded playthrough you care about.

How to access it and at what price

Cost of Hope is part of the Season Pass for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2, which is itself included in the Ultimate Edition. If you own either one, you have nothing extra to pay.

For a standalone purchase, GSC has not confirmed a price to date. Estimates based on the price of the Ultimate Edition put the expansion at around twenty euros, but until the studio announces anything, treat that figure as an approximation.

The real question: which save should you use?

This is the point to think about right now, because it will shape your entire experience.

If you've finished the base game

Check that you have a save from before the point of no return. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 locks its final stretch, and a save made past that threshold might not work for tackling additional content built into the open world.

Do this check before August 20th. Discovering on launch night that you only have an end-game save means starting a whole new campaign before you can even touch the expansion.

If you're mid-playthrough

You're in the best position. Keep going, but don't rush toward the ending just to "be ready." Nothing indicates that finishing the campaign is a prerequisite, and an ongoing playthrough with a properly equipped character is exactly what you need.

If you've never played

Two and a half weeks is short for finishing S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2. Our advice: don't rush. Start now, play at your own pace, and let the expansion wait for you. It isn't going anywhere, and rushing through a game that relies entirely on tension and careful exploration is the best way to miss out on it.

Your checklist before August 20th

  1. Back up your save folder. This is precaution number one before any engine migration. A copy on another drive takes two minutes and can save a hundred hours of play.
  2. Identify a usable save, one made before the end-of-campaign lock.
  3. List your active mods and note their versions. You'll need this to rebuild your setup if 2.0 breaks them.
  4. Stock up on ammo and medical kits. You're heading into two unfamiliar regions with new enemies: this is not the time to travel light.
  5. Check your disk space. A two-region expansion combined with an engine migration won't download with three gigabytes free.
  6. Review your graphics settings. After an engine change, inherited settings are rarely optimal — plan on going back into the options menu on launch day.

What remains unknown

Let's be honest about the gray areas. GSC hasn't communicated a recommended level, nor any precise progression requirements for accessing the new regions. The studio also hasn't detailed the exact content of 2.0 beyond the engine migration, nor confirmed the standalone price.

These details will likely be clarified in the days before launch. In the meantime, the preparation described above remains valid no matter what: a clean save, a properly equipped character, and a healthy installation will never work against you.

Frequently asked questions

I only have a post-credits save, am I stuck?
Probably yes when it comes to accessing content integrated into the open world. You'll need to start a fresh full campaign. Check before August 20 whether you have a backup from before the ending lock.
I'm playing with mods, what's going to happen on August 20?
A major engine version change very often breaks modifications. List your active mods and their versions now, and plan on a full re-check after the 2.0 update.
Do I absolutely need to finish the campaign before Cost of Hope?
No, nothing suggests that. An ongoing playthrough with a well-equipped character is more than enough. Don't rush to the ending just to be "ready".
How much exactly does Cost of Hope cost?
GSC hasn't confirmed the price as of now. Estimates put it around 20 euros, but wait for the official announcement before counting on that.
I've never played S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2, do I have time to be ready?
Two and a half weeks is just enough to complete the campaign without rushing. Start now at your own pace instead of racing through: the expansion isn't going anywhere, and this game demands care to be fully enjoyed.

Key takeaways

  • Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant and the Iron Forest finally open up, promising dozens of hours of non-linear narrative exploration
  • The engine migration to Unreal Engine 5.5.4 should improve stability and performance, but will likely break your mods
  • A save from before the point of no return is essential: check now so you don't get stuck at an ending
  • Stock up on ammo and supplies before heading out: two unknown regions with new enemies aren't crossed while traveling light
