In brief

Marvel Rivals' August 27 patch fixes a major exploit on Doctor Strange: his shield would instantly fill up thanks to the Psionic Vortex Team-Up, short-circuiting all of the character's defensive tension. NetEase classifies this fix as an "unintended bug," not a rebalance—so there won't be any compensation.

NetEase rolled out the Version 20260827 patch for Marvel Rivals on Thursday, August 27, 2026 at 9 a.m. UTC — 11 a.m. CEST. It arrived without any service interruption: as the studio put it, “no server downtime; just download and play.”

This patch doesn't touch any hero statistics. Yet it contains a fix that changes a gameplay situation, and it concerns one of the most-played characters in the game: Doctor Strange.

Doctor Strange's shield used to fill up instantly

The entry is listed under the “Fixes and Optimizations” section, in the “Heroes” category. Here's what NetEase says, word for word:

Doctor Strange's Shield Surge — “Fixed an unintended issue that allowed Doctor Strange, when using the Team-Up ability Psionic Vortex, to instantly restore his Shield of the Seraphim to its maximum value while its enhanced effect was active.”

Three things follow from this, in order.

What the bug did

The Shield of the Seraphim is Doctor Strange's defensive resource: it wears down when he takes hits and slowly regenerates when he lowers it. The character's whole tension hinges on this meter. The fixed interaction reset it to maximum, instantly, provided the Psionic Vortex Team-Up ability was used at the right moment — when the shield's enhanced effect was active.

In other words, one team composition gave access to a full reset of the hero's main constraint. This isn't a numbers imbalance: it's a window that shouldn't have existed.

What changes for you

  • If you play Doctor Strange with this Team-Up: shield management goes back to being like everyone else's. Falling back and timing your plays regain their value.
  • If you play against him: the windows when his shield drops no longer close artificially. That's the moment your team needs to engage.
  • If you were building a composition around this interaction: it no longer has any reason to exist, and NetEase hasn't replaced it with any compensation.

The word that matters: “unintended”

NetEase writes “an unintended issue,” not “a balance adjustment.” The studio therefore isn't presenting this change as a negotiable rebalance, but as the repair of behavior that was never intended. There's nothing to expect in terms of a rollback.

Angela: her visual effects were glitching out after her death

Second hero fix, this one cosmetic:

Angela's Graphic Issues — “Fixed an issue where Angela's visual effects could display incorrectly after she was defeated while using the Team-Up ability Odin's Unacknowledged.”

No effect on gameplay, but useful to know if you'd reported strange visuals around Angela: it wasn't your graphics settings.

Three other visual issues fixed

Official nameWhat was broken
Mystic Video GlitchThe Team-Up preview video between Scarlet Witch and Doctor Strange wasn't launching properly
Cloak & Dagger's Crisp CanvasJagged textures on the "Sunset Shores" chroma for Cloak & Dagger's Coastal Couple costume
Scarlet Witch's Chaotic ChoreographyMisaligned placement of visual effects for Scarlet Witch's Floral Tide emote

The first of these three deserves a word: the Team-Up preview video is the only in-game source that explains what the ability does. As long as it wasn't launching, a player discovering the Scarlet Witch / Doctor Strange duo had no easy way to understand the interaction — the very one whose bug has just been fixed.

What's coming to the shop on August 28 at 2 AM UTC

The patch opens up three new offers, all starting August 28 at 2 AM UTC (4 AM in Paris):

OfferAvailability
Peni Parker — Liquid Shell BundleLimited: from August 28, 2 AM UTC to September 25, 2 AM UTC
Angela — Queen of Hel BundleStarting August 28, 2 AM UTC
Squirrel Girl — Acorn Divinity BundleStarting August 28, 2 AM UTC
Squirrel Girl — Acorn Divinity Emoji BundleStarting August 28, 2 AM UTC

Only one of these four bundles carries an end date: the Peni Parker one, removed on September 25. The other three are announced with no deadline — which, in the vocabulary of Marvel Rivals patch notes, distinguishes permanent offers from limited-time ones.

The deadline to keep in mind: September 11

The same patch sets the end of the Endgame Encore event and its Infinity Saga tab at September 11, 9 AM UTC — we detailed yesterday how the Encore coupon that recharges after each purchase works. This date isn't chosen at random: it corresponds to the switch to Season 10. Everything tied to Season 9.5 therefore stops at the same time.

And what this patch doesn't contain

It needs to be said clearly, because the question comes up with every update without fail: no hero or weapon rebalancing appears in the August 27 patch. No changes to damage, health points, cooldowns, or ultimate costs. The only gameplay-related lines are the two fixes above. The next major changes are therefore expected at the season switch.

NetEase publishes its patch notes in English only, and every localised client of Marvel Rivals keeps hero, costume and ability names in English. The labels above are quoted from the official notes.

This Doctor Strange fix—did you see it coming, or does it surprise you?

Frequently asked questions

Why isn't this a Doctor Strange nerf?
NetEase explicitly classifies it as an "unintended issue," not a "balance adjustment." The studio considers that this exploit window should never have existed—so it's a repair, not a rebalance.
Is there any compensation for Doctor Strange after this fix?
No, NetEase isn't planning any. The patch notes don't mention any compensatory buff, and the studio remains silent on the matter.
What actually changes in-game with this fix?
If you play Doctor Strange, managing the Shield of the Seraphim becomes a genuinely limited resource again. If you play against him, his vulnerability windows no longer close artificially—now's the time to attack in a coordinated push.
Are there other gameplay changes in this patch?
No, no hero or weapon rebalancing is on the docket. The only gameplay changes are the two fixes: the Doctor Strange one and the one for Angela's post-death visual effects.
When does the next wave of hero changes arrive?
At the Season 10 transition, whose date hasn't been announced yet. NetEase concentrates rebalances around season changes.

Key takeaways

  • Doctor Strange loses his ability to instantly fill his Shield of the Seraphim via Psionic Vortex, becoming a viable target again.
  • The hero's shield management returns to its normal constraints: no more artificially extended retreat windows.
  • NetEase describes this change as a technical fix, not a nerf: no rollback should be expected.
  • Three visual bugs were fixed alongside it, including the Scarlet Witch / Doctor Strange Team-Up showcase video that wouldn't play.
  • Three new bundles arrive in the shop (limited Peni Parker, permanent Angela and Squirrel Girl), while the Endgame Encore event closes on September 11.
