In brief

John Wick's Dog is a free pet to unlock before August 19 by freeing the animal from a cage on the island. It can be found at one of two randomly drawn locations (Desolate Desert or Groveler's Grove), and obtaining it also grants a legendary Pistol-Spear. Without the Season 3 Battle Pass, there's no way to get it once the season closes.

The "Frenzied Collection" season (Chapter 7 Season 3) closes on August 19, 2026, and with it all the rewards tied to the Battle Pass. Among the ones most often overlooked: the Sketch Dog pet, otherwise known as John Wick's dog. It doesn't unlock by leveling up: you have to go free the animal from a cage, on the island, before the season switches over.

The dog only appears in two locations, never both at once, and it's guarded by hostile NPCs. Once you know where to look, the operation takes two minutes — and it also drops one of the best pistols of the season.

Here are the two exact locations, the steps to follow, what the cage actually rewards, and the pet system rules you should know before spending a single V-Buck in the shop.

Where to find John Wick's dog

The dog is locked in a cage at one of these two points of interest, randomly determined each match. Only one location is active per match: if the cage is empty at the first one, it's at the second.

  • Sinister Strip — inside the large hotel-style building, south of the point of interest. The cage sits in the middle of the main room, the one that opens onto the grand staircase.
  • The Battlewoods — not on the surface, but in the sewers running beneath the area. The fastest access point is north of the point of interest: dive into the water and swim up the pipe.

These two areas are far apart, which rules out chaining them calmly early in the match. The most efficient approach is to pick your bus route as soon as you take off and commit to just one of the two: if the dog is elsewhere, you'll spend the match crossing the map instead of fighting.

How to free it step by step

  • Arm yourself before approaching: the cage is always surrounded by NPC guards, and showing up empty-handed doesn't forgive mistakes.
  • Eliminate the first pair of guards that triggers as you approach.
  • Hold your position: a second wave of reinforcements appears right after. This is what causes most attempts to fail, because people rush the cage between the two waves.
  • Interact with the cage to open the door and let the dog out.
  • Interact a second time to pet it: it's this action, not opening the cage, that completes the quest.

One detail that changes everything late in the season: if another player has already done the work before you in the same match, all you need to do is pet the dog to complete it on your end too. In other words, in squad modes, only one team member needs to clear out the guards, and the rest just have to come touch the animal. This is by far the fastest method if you're tackling this at the last minute.

One condition, however, cannot be worked around: you must own the Chapter 7 Season 3 Battle Pass for the pet to unlock. Without it, you'll get the loot from the cage, but not the companion.

What the cage really rewards

Freeing the dog isn't just about ticking off a quest line. The animal drops a legendary Spear Pistol and, more rarely, its mythic variant, the 9mm Baba Yaga. You also bank some season XP, which isn't nothing if you're still chasing the last tiers of the pass.

The Spear Pistol arrived with the season and remains one of the most underused weapons of the chapter. It's a high fire-rate semi-automatic, both accurate at medium range and comfortable in close-quarters duels thanks to a generous magazine — 21 rounds on the mythic version.

Its real quirk lies in its reload: at close range to an opponent, your character throws the empty magazine at their face, dealing 45 extra damage. It's not a gimmick. On an enemy left at 40 health behind a build, a well-placed reload finishes the job without needing to fire a single bullet. If you're still stuck on a quest that requires hitting an opponent with the magazine, this is the weapon you need.

The bonuses that unlock afterward

The mascot isn't the end of the story. Once the Dog (Sketch) is equipped in your locker, simply playing with it unlocks a series of associated cosmetic rewards: a gradient style for the animal, an emoticon, a reaction, and a mascot emote. None of this can be bought: progress is made purely through matches, with the mascot equipped.

In practical terms, this means freeing the dog from its cage on the evening of August 18th will indeed give you the mascot, but not enough time to unlock its extras before the season switch. If this interests you, it's better to free it now and leave the mascot equipped for your last ten days of Season 3.

Fortnite Mascots: the rules nobody reads

Mascots arrived on November 2, 2025, with Chapter 6 Season 6, and the game files now list a good sixty of them. They're equipped from the locker, exactly like a back bling, and they trot along beside you in matches.

Three points are worth knowing before buying one:

  • Customization is unique and permanent. On first setup, you choose the base color, accent color, eye color, and eye shape. Once confirmed, it's locked in for that copy — there's no button to start over.
  • The name, on the other hand, can be changed as many times as you like. It's limited in length and remains visible to other players.
  • No impact on gameplay. Mascots are invisible to your opponents, they take no damage, and they don't give away your position. So you never handicap yourself by equipping one.

The first point is the most important: Epic hasn't provided a reset option. Take the time to set the appearance in the menu rather than confirming it automatically between matches, especially on a free mascot you won't be able to buy back once the season ends.

The other mascots available this summer

The item shop moves fast on this type of cosmetic, with prices generally ranging from 1,200 to 1,800 V-Bucks depending on the license. Summer 2026 was particularly busy: Krypto on June 25, then a big batch on July 16 with Bat-Hound Ace, Junior P.A.N.D.A., The Great Dane and Bobomi, Patrick Starfish on July 23, and finally Sire Wyvern and Calm Capy on July 30.

On the Chapter 7 Season 3 side, three mascots arrived right at launch on June 6: The Black Barker, Sphinx of Meowdas and the famous Dog (Sketched). The latter is the only one that can be obtained directly in-game, via the Battle Pass — all the more reason not to let the window slip by.

Mascots changed status on July 23

One detail slipped under the radar: since July 23, mascots are no longer confined to the role of background dressing. Epic has opened them up to creators as programmable NPCs in UEFN, with appearance customization, scripted behaviors in Verse and dedicated animations.

Right after that, a collection page dedicated to creatures was added to the Discover tab, bringing together islands built around these companions — creature battles, collection games, co-op adventures. This is the first time a mascot has served a purpose beyond looking nice behind your character, and it's worth checking out if Battle Royale is starting to wear thin with ten days left before the season ends.

To do before the switch

Season 3 ends on August 19, with Season 4 taking over the next day. Everything tied to the Battle Pass — the dog included — becomes permanently inaccessible at that moment, with no catch-up mechanism or grace period.

The right way to approach these final days: unlock the dog on your very next session rather than waiting until the eve of the shutdown, equip it right away to let its side rewards keep running, and keep the Wasp Pistol in mind whenever you come across a well-guarded cage. A free companion and a mythic item for two minutes of detour — that's the best effort-to-reward ratio still available on this map.

Are you going to hunt down John Wick's Dog before August 19?

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to free the dog and get the pet?
The whole operation takes about two minutes once you know the exact location. If a teammate has already cleared out the guards, you just need to pet the animal to claim it for yourself.
Can John Wick's Dog be found at both locations in the same match?
No, only one location is active per match. If the cage is empty at Desolate Desert, it's guaranteed to be at Groveler's Grove, or vice versa.
What happens if I get the dog after August 19?
That's impossible. Season 3 closes on August 19 and all its rewards become inaccessible. Without a valid Battle Pass during the season, you'll never be able to unlock this pet.
Is the Pistol-Spear that comes out of the cage actually worth using?
Yes, it's one of the best weapons of the season. Throwing its magazine at close range deals an extra 45 damage, which is often enough to finish off a weakened enemy without firing a single shot.
Do you absolutely need the Battle Pass to get the pet?
Yes. You can grab the loot from the cage without it, but the pet itself only unlocks if you own the Chapter 7 Season 3 Battle Pass.

Key takeaways

  • The pet is freed by approaching a cage guarded by hostile NPCs, not by leveling up the Battle Pass tiers
  • It only appears at one of the two locations per match, so it's up to you to plan your route
  • The Pistol-Spear that comes out of the cage lets you stun enemies with its empty magazine, a mechanic that's often overlooked
  • Once equipped, the pet unlocks cosmetic rewards simply by playing, so make sure to do it before August 19
  • Pets have been more than just cosmetics since July: they can now serve as programmable NPCs in UEFN for creators
