Jackdaw AC Black Flag Resynced: upgrading and customizing your ship

Jackdaw upgrades and customization come into play as early as Sequence 3 of Assassin's Creed: Black Flag Resynced - meaning fairly early in the adventure. There are no complex prerequisites, but a few menus you need to know about and one sticking point that comes up often: locked upgrade tiers that many players don't know how to unlock. Here's everything you need to know, in order.

Customizing the Jackdaw's appearance

Visual customization becomes available from the first mission of Sequence 3, as soon as Edward takes command of the Jackdaw. Head below the navigation deck to the captain's cabin: you'll find two interactive stations there. The mannequin on the left handles Edward's outfit, while the ship model on the right opens the Jackdaw's customization menu.

Tip

Don't feel like heading back to the ship every time? Every Harbormaster gives access to exactly the same cosmetics menu. Handy when you're deep in farming between two islands.

What you can change visually notably includes the hull, sails, and figurehead. But let's be clear: no cosmetic boosts your stats. It's purely aesthetic - with the exception of a few bonuses included in the Deluxe Edition, which can have a gameplay impact.

To expand your collection, capturing forts is the best method. Besides new cosmetics, forts also reward Reales, which never hurts.

Unlocking and accessing the upgrade menu

The Jackdaw's functional upgrades arrive a bit later: they're introduced during the third mission of Sequence 3. The game requires you to buy a first upgrade from a Harbormaster - once that step is completed, the menu becomes permanently accessible from any Harbormaster.

Unlike the captain's cabin (reserved for cosmetics), ship upgrades can only be managed at dock, always through a Harbormaster. Ship icons on the map show you their locations in the major port cities.

Upgrades cost Reales and crafting materials - wood, metal, cloth, depending on the upgrade in question. To farm these resources efficiently, prefer boarding ships rather than sinking them: pirate hunters and large vessels are particularly profitable.

Unlocking higher tiers: Great Inagua

You'll quickly notice that several upgrades are grayed out and inaccessible. This isn't a bug. The cause: your Great Inagua hideout.

The island is unlocked via the quest "That Old Familiar Cove" in Sequence 4. Once Great Inagua is freed, talk to the NPC positioned next to the Harbormaster on the island. By investing Reales in this stand, you unlock new upgrade tiers for the Jackdaw, as well as its most powerful upgrades.

Note

This is the unlock step that most players miss. Upgrading the Harbormaster at Great Inagua is an absolute priority if you want to access the ship's full potential.

Which upgrades to prioritize?

Three categories deserve your Reales before anything else:

• Armored hull - increases the Jackdaw's HP. The longer you last at sea, the more damage you deal over time. Max this first.
• Broadside cannons - more cannons, more firepower. Essential for quickly destroying or boarding enemy ships.
• Ammunition - improves broadside damage. Combined with upgraded cannons, it radically changes naval combat.

These three areas become even more critical once you start tackling fortified forts, among other things. These encounters are tough with a base Jackdaw. A well-upgraded ship makes them significantly more manageable.

The logic is simple: invest in the Jackdaw before spending your resources elsewhere. A solid ship means less frustration, more loot, and a Caribbean that gradually becomes your playground rather than a permanent danger zone.
