inZOI: the Zois' autonomy is being rebuilt from scratch — why September's update will be light on new features, and what the studio admits
In brief
Originally planned for August, inZOI's update is now arriving in early September, but it will be light on new content. The reason: the studio is rebuilding the Zois' autonomy system entirely from scratch, admitting that the pace of content additions has degraded existing features and created conflicts between systems.
inZOI published a post titled "Sticks and Stones" on Friday 21 August 2026 at 12:39 UTC, signed Kjun. It follows the 19 August announcement, in which the studio pushed its August update back to early September. This time it explains why — and the explanation is considerably more interesting than the delay itself.
In short: the Zois' autonomy system is being rebuilt from scratch. As a consequence the studio openly accepts, the coming update will hold few visible new features. Here is exactly what the post says, and what it means for your ongoing save.
The admission: features that worked broke along the way
The central passage of the post is a rare admission from a studio in early access:
"Because we had been so focused on continuously adding new content, some features that previously worked well gradually became broken or began conflicting with one another through subsequent updates."
Put another way: the pace of content additions degraded what already existed, and successive updates ended up contradicting each other. Kjun adds that the further the team gets into this groundwork, the more it finds itself reflecting on where it could have done better as a development team.
The three symptoms the studio names outright
The post does not stay abstract. It lists behaviours players will recognise:
- Zois that used to follow their routines naturally and no longer go to sleep at the appropriate time.
- Zois that repeatedly perform unrelated actions instead of the ones they actually need to do.
- Unusual behaviour in how family members interact with one another and in their everyday routines.
And the diagnosis tying them together: "Each issue may seem small on its own, but when they accumulate, they ultimately affect the overall gameplay experience." Any single fault looks minor; it is the accumulation that damages the experience.
If you were playing while suspecting you had set your Zois' traits wrong, or blaming a mod conflict: it was not you. The studio acknowledges a structural problem in its own system.

"From the ground up": this is not a patch, it is a rebuild
Kjun's wording explicitly rules out patching over the cracks:
"So this time, rather than simply patching individual parts of the existing system, we are reviewing autonomy from the ground up and working on structural improvements across the entire system."
The word "autonomy" — the Zois' autonomous behaviour — is, by the studio's own admission, "one of the most important systems in inZOI". It is the heart of the game: the thing that makes a Zoi live their life when you are not steering them.
A calendar reminder is in order here. The August update was already supposed to carry, according to the 12 August communication, Zois autonomous at 90 %, vacations, free diving and a mod manager. It is precisely the autonomy brick that is back on the workbench today.
What the update will contain — and what it will not
The studio is preparing players for an apparent disappointment, and says so plainly:
"As a result, we haven't been able to add many new features in this update. We determined that trying to develop a large amount of new functionality while simultaneously carrying out a major overhaul of the existing systems would be too much under the current circumstances."
The announced content therefore splits into two piles:
| What is coming | What is pushed back |
|---|---|
| The "high-priority" improvements drawn from the FF list shared by the community | The usual volume of new features |
| The structural overhaul of the autonomy system | — |
| As many bug fixes as possible | — |
An honesty caveat on that "FF list": Kjun does not expand the acronym anywhere in the post. We quote it as-is, without interpreting it.
The closing sentence of that section sums up the trade-off: "More than anything, we want to get a build with as many bugs fixed as possible into your hands as soon as we can. If you can wait just a little longer, we will do our best to reduce as many of the currently identified issues as possible and bring you Zois who behave more naturally and reliably than before."
Note the "wait just a little longer": no new date is given in this post. The only public marker remains the "early September" announced on 19 August.

inZOI will be at TapTap 2026 in Shanghai, on 12 and 13 September
The post closes on an announcement Kjun presents as a first. inZOI has been invited to 2026 TapTap, a physical event running on 12 and 13 September, in Hall A of the West Bund Art Center, in Shanghai.
The announced programme: game demos and exhibitions, plus opportunities to meet developers and creators. The studio sees it above all as a chance to meet its Chinese players in person and introduce the game to them. Kjun promises to share more "next week" — meaning within days.
One calendar point worth keeping in mind: the update is expected in "early September" and TapTap runs on the 12th and 13th. The two deadlines sit close together, and nothing in the post explicitly links them.
What to take away for your save
- Stop looking for the cause of your erratic Zois in your own settings: the studio has acknowledged the problem and is treating it at the root.
- Do not expect a big batch of new features from the coming update: it is announced as groundwork.
- No firm date is communicated in this post; the marker remains "early September".
- If you had customised regions, the 19 August warning still stands: part of that work will need redoing.
- The video that accompanies the post is not hosted on Steam: the studio points to its Discord and official forum.
One closing remark, because it holds beyond inZOI. A studio in early access that publicly announces a content-light update in order to rebuild an existing system takes a real communication risk. It is also, for a life simulation game, the only trade-off that holds up over time: nobody plays a simulator whose inhabitants no longer know how to go to bed.

Would you rather accept a longer delay and an update light on new content for a truly solid autonomy system, or would you have preferred quick patches even if imperfect?
