In brief

inZOI is Krafton's life simulator that finally rivals The Sims 4 since its Early Access launch (March 2025). Powered by Unreal Engine 5 and packed with AI tools, the game offers an ultra-precise character creator, two distinct cities, and an emergent karma/ambitions system. This guide explains how to get started, optimize your PC, and understand the main mechanics before version 1.0.

Released in Early Access on March 28, 2025 on PC, inZOI is the life simulator from Krafton (the Korean studio behind PUBG) that established itself, almost overnight, as the first serious competitor to The Sims 4 in ten years. Powered by Unreal Engine 5, packed with generative AI tools and designed for community creation, the game appeals both to nostalgic fans of EA's sandbox and to the curious who want to see just how far a photorealistic simulator can go in 2026. Here is a complete guide to help you get started, understand the core mechanics, and find out what awaits you before version 1.0.

What is inZOI and where does the game stand in 2026?

inZOI is an open life simulator in which you create one or more Zois (the game's characters), settle them in a city, manage their needs, their career, their relationships, and above all their destiny. Since its Early Access launch, Krafton has been rolling out major patches one after another: mini-map, new careers, reputation, animations, cloud saving, and, over the course of 2026, an ambitious roadmap aiming to open up a co-op mode and add a new district inspired by Indonesia.

Every life becomes a story — the tagline displayed by Krafton on inZOI's Steam page sums up the project's ambition: turning a simulated life into a genuine, emergent narrative.

As of this writing, the game holds around 79% positive reviews on Steam and has just received the June 2026 update (host-based multiplayer + mod support), with a major patch expected in the fall. The 1.0 release doesn't have a firm date yet, but the PlayStation 5 version, initially slated for 2026, has been pushed back to the first half of 2027.

Downloading inZOI on Steam and PC requirements

inZOI is sold exclusively on Steam (app 2456740). Expect to pay around 40 euros for the base game in Early Access, with Deluxe cosmetic editions priced slightly higher. The download currently weighs in at around 60 GB — make sure you have room to spare, as future updates will only add to the client's size.

On the hardware side, Unreal Engine 5 is particularly demanding. Here's what Krafton officially states:

  • Minimum requirements: Intel Core i5 10400 or AMD Ryzen 5 3600, 12 GB RAM, NVIDIA RTX 2060 or AMD RX 5600 XT, 60 GB of disk space.
  • Recommended requirements: Intel Core i7 12700 or AMD Ryzen 7 5800, 16 GB RAM, NVIDIA RTX 3070 or AMD RX 6800 XT.
  • Supported upscaling: DLSS Super Resolution (NVIDIA), FSR 3 (AMD) and XeSS (Intel) — nearly essential if you're aiming for 1440p on High settings.

Tip: if your card is short on VRAM, start by disabling Ray Tracing (the “software global illumination” option in the settings) and lowering shadow quality — these are the two biggest FPS traps.

Creating your Zoi: the Zoi Studio

The first step after the intro cinematic is going through the Zoi Studio (the local “Create-a-Zoi”, also called the Zoi Editor). This is where inZOI immediately scores points against Maxis: every facial feature, every strand of hair, every tattoo can be adjusted with a level of precision worthy of a AAA character design tool.

Key points to keep in mind so you don't get lost:

  • Start with a preset close to the style you want, then fine-tune it — otherwise you risk spending an entire evening on it.
  • The Preferences (music, food, activities, decoration…) genuinely influence gameplay: they shape wants, the most lucrative careers, and the Zoi's satisfaction.
  • Personality traits combine with preference and karma to define personality — avoid stacking three contradictory traits.
  • The studio can be played standalone: inZOI: Character Studio is available for free on Steam, handy for testing before buying.

Choosing your city: Dowon or Bliss Bay

Early Access offers two cities, very different in their visual identity and gameplay offerings.

Dowon is a South Korean metropolis in the style of Seoul: skyscrapers, karaoke bars, temples, libraries, internet cafés, themed cafés and convenience stores (konbini). The standout careers here are firefighter, konbini employee, restaurateur or K-pop idol. It's the ideal playground for urban, ambitious Zois heavily into digital leisure and nightlife.

Bliss Bay is a seaside bay directly inspired by Santa Monica: beach, amusement park, beach volleyball court, surf shop, waterfront hotel. On the career side, you'll find amusement park, surf shop, fast food or furniture store. The atmosphere is much more laid-back, perfect for a "family in the sun" or "lifestyle influencer" scenario.

The choice isn't final: you can move from one city to the other during the game, and a third area — the famous Indonesian "cat city" — is arriving with the first major DLC expansion.

Managing needs, Desires and Ambitions

As in The Sims, your Zoi has a set of vital needs to keep an eye on (hunger, energy, hygiene, bladder, social, fun, environment). Nothing groundbreaking here — the real layer of gameplay lies above it, around three systems unique to inZOI:

  • Ambitions: long-term life goals (becoming a CEO, a celebrity, a rock star, a parent…). They pay off big but require weeks of play.
  • Desires: fleeting wants that pop up throughout the day and disappear after 24 hours. Treat them like micro-quests.
  • Meow Points and Donuts: reward currencies that feed the Meow Shop (exclusive items) and unlock immediate boosts to needs.

The Psicat companion, a small cat/assistant living in your Zoi Card (the quick-access menu), summarizes at any time what you still have to do. Honestly, turn off its advice once you've got the mechanics down, otherwise it quickly becomes intrusive.

Relationships, karma and career

inZOI's social layer relies on Karma, a moral gauge that rises or falls depending on your actions (generosity, lies, aggression…). Very positive karma opens up kind interactions and luck bonuses, while negative karma attracts darker events, including health and reputation penalties.

On the career side, each city offers different professional tracks. The actively playable jobs (where you follow the Zoi to the workplace) are still limited — firefighter, restaurateur, konbini employee, idol — but the March 2026 update added several more, and a professional reputation system now adds nuance to promotions.

The in-game app Pocket Market (on the Zoi's smartphone) lets you order food, resell items or access services — the equivalent of an internal mini-Amazon.

Build Mode, furnishing and generative AI

The Build Mode (sometimes called Build Studio) reuses the familiar grids from The Sims, with very free-form management of walls, terrain and floors. inZOI's real strengths lie elsewhere:

  • AI Texture Generator: describe a pattern (“emerald green art deco tile”), the AI generates the texture and you can apply it directly to clothing, sofas or wallpapers.
  • 3D Printer: import a 2D image or a video, the AI converts it into a placeable 3D object in-game. Ideal for recreating personal artwork or furnishing a room with unique objects.
  • Canvas AI: generate paintings, posters and prints from a simple prompt, without leaving the game.
  • Assisted behaviors: a small language model (sLM) enriches certain autonomous reactions of the Zois — still experimental, but very promising.

inZOI vs. The Sims 4: strengths and gaps

The comparison is unavoidable. On paper, inZOI outclasses The Sims 4 in 2026 in three areas:

  • Graphical fidelity (Unreal Engine 5 versus an in-house engine from 2014).
  • The depth of the character creator, closer to a modern role-playing game than a simulator.
  • AI-assisted creation tools, absent from EA's title.

But The Sims 4 still holds serious advantages: ten years of content (packs, kits, mods), a more refined system of emotions and social interactions, complete family content (babies, children, teenagers, pets, seasons) and a massive modding community. inZOI, meanwhile, remains a young game in Early Access.

Summing up inZOI as a “Sims-killer” in 2026 would be an overstatement: it's more of a fresh competitor, more beautiful, more modern in its tools, but one that still needs to gain systemic depth.

What's still missing before 1.0

Krafton is communicating about a dense 2026 roadmap, but several pieces are still missing:

  • Full multiplayer: home sharing and co-op mode are being rolled out, but the opening of large-scale servers isn't planned until late 2026.
  • The family life cycle: babies and aging were improved in summer 2026, but the depth of a “Growing Together”-style pack from EA isn't there yet.
  • Pets, highly requested by the community, are expected but not officially dated.
  • A real career system for all professions (currently, only a few are actively playable).
  • More cities: a second expansion, tentatively named Lavender City and inspired by France, has already been mentioned in datamines.

To go further

A few French-language resources worth keeping on hand to progress in inZOI:

  • Official website: playinzoi.com/fr — news, patch notes and roadmap.
  • Steam page: store.steampowered.com for purchasing and technical updates.
  • French communities: inzoi.fr and inzoi-france.com for guides, mods and texture imports.
  • French-language guides: Millenium, Breakflip and GameWave regularly publish thematic features (cities, careers, romances, cheats…).

In short: inZOI in 2026 isn't yet the ultimate life simulator, but it's probably the most exciting one to discover right now. Take the time to properly fine-tune your first Zoi, choose the city that fits your playstyle, and let yourself be swept up by the first truly credible alternative to The Sims in a decade.

Frequently asked questions

Do I really need to go through Studio Zoi, or can I just generate a random Zoi?
You can use a preset, but honestly, Studio Zoi is worth it: every facial feature, every strand of hair can be fine-tuned with a level of detail worthy of big AAA games. Start with a preset close to your style, then refine it — otherwise you'll spend the whole evening on it. Note that the free Character Studio on Steam lets you try it out before buying the full game.
Which city should I choose to start, Dowon or Bliss Bay?
Dowon is urban Seoul: skyscrapers, subways, karaoke bars, K-pop idols. Bliss Bay is Santa Monica: beach, amusement park, surfers. Pick Dowon if you want an ambitious, digital-first life, Bliss Bay for a laid-back, family-oriented one. You can move during the game, so the choice isn't final.
Is Psicat (the assistant cat) actually useful or just annoying?
Super useful in the first few hours to understand the mechanics, frankly intrusive afterward. Turn off its tips once you've mastered Desires, Ambitions, and Karma — otherwise it becomes just one more pop-up you didn't need.
How big is the download and what's the minimum setup to avoid crashing?
The game is currently around 60 GB (and it will grow). Minimum: Intel Core i5 10400, 12 GB RAM, RTX 2060, but that's tight. Recommended: i7 12700, 16 GB RAM, RTX 3070. Tip: if you have an older card, disable Ray Tracing first, then lower shadow quality — those are the two biggest FPS hogs.
Does the generative texture AI and the 3D Printer actually work, or is it just marketing?
It works: describe a pattern ("emerald green Art Deco tile"), the AI generates the texture and you apply it directly to clothes, sofas, or wallpaper. The 3D Printer converts a 2D image into a placeable 3D object. It's very handy for creating unique content without leaving the game, but it's still experimental and can occasionally glitch.

Key takeaways

  • Studio Zoi surpasses The Sims' creator: every facial feature, every tattoo can be fine-tuned with AAA-level precision, and your preferences genuinely influence gameplay.
  • Dowon (a Korean metropolis) and Bliss Bay (a seaside bay) offer two radically different experiences — your city choice shapes careers, hobbies, and overall vibe.
  • Generative texture AI, the 3D Printer, and Canvas AI transform building: describe an Art Deco tile pattern or import an image, and the game converts your creations into playable objects.
  • Your Ambitions (becoming a CEO, celebrity, parent) are long, rewarding quests, while daily Desires function as micro-quests — Karma affects everything.
  • Expect a 60 GB download and an RTX 2060 as a minimum; DLSS/FSR is nearly mandatory at 1440p High for a stable 60 FPS.
