In brief

El Tiburon in AC Black Flag Resynced refuses your sword strikes and bullets at first: his armor is immune. There are two ways to break it and finally defeat him properly — one slow and precise, the other instant with a smoke bomb.

El Tiburon shows up during the main quest of sequence 12, at the heart of a fort in Havana. From the first seconds of the fight, your sword hits bounce off his armor without leaving so much as a scratch. No bug, no glitch: it's intentional. You need to change your approach, and that's what we'll look at here.

How his armor works

Edward himself says it at the start of the fight: melee attacks are useless against this armor. Bullets are the key. Except even pistols seem ineffective at first - quick shots, manual aiming, nothing seems to work. This is where a lot of players get stuck or think it's a bug.

The reality: El Tiburon is completely immune as long as his armor is intact. You need to break it first, and there are two ways to do that. One slow, one fast.

Method 1: chained headshots

Aim manually with your pistol and chain headshots. No spraying wildly, you need to aim precisely. After enough successful headshots, the armor breaks and you'll be able to deal melee damage to him normally again.

It's reliable, but it takes time. If your aim isn't on point, the fight can drag on considerably. And meanwhile, El Tiburon keeps summoning reinforcements that pile up fast.

Method 2: the smoke bomb (recommended)

This is the most effective method. You need to meet three conditions right at the start of the fight:

  • Be at full health.
  • Position yourself close to El Tiburon.
  • Throw a smoke bomb directly at your feet.

As soon as the smoke deploys, shoot El Tiburon - quick shot or manual aim, it doesn't matter. The combination of smoke + shot triggers a small explosion that instantly breaks his armor. The repeated headshot process gets bypassed entirely.

Note

Once the armor is destroyed, the fight shifts into something much more manageable.

Finishing the fight

Once his armor is broken, El Tiburon becomes vulnerable to melee again. The classic pattern applies: parry his attacks and counter-attack until his health bar is empty. Nothing tricky at this stage.

The real challenge is managing the reinforcements he keeps summoning throughout the fight. They can quickly overwhelm you if you ignore them. Good news: they drop ammo and healing items. And if you're well positioned, you can grab one as a human shield to absorb shots and reposition safely.

Frequently asked questions

Why do my hits deal no damage to El Tiburon?
His armor is completely immune to melee attacks and initial damage. This is an intentional game mechanic, not a bug. You must first break this armor — either through chained headshots, or (recommended) with the smoke bomb + shot combo.
What's the best way to fight El Tiburon?
Position yourself at close range with your health bar full, throw a smoke bomb at your feet, and shoot him. The smoke + projectile combination triggers an explosion that breaks his armor instantly, much faster than aiming for the head indefinitely.
How do you handle the reinforcements he summons during the fight?
The enemies he summons drop ammo and healing items — they're a resource. You can also grab them as human shields to absorb shots and reposition calmly instead of ignoring them.
Does the fight become easy after breaking the armor?
Yes, very much so. Once the armor is destroyed, apply the classic tactic: parry his attacks and counter-attack until his health bar is empty. The real challenge is the armor phase, not what comes after.

Key takeaways

  • El Tiburon's armor absorbs all melee damage and basic bullet damage: it's intentional, not a bug.
  • A smoke bomb thrown at your feet followed by a shot destroys his armor instantly — the most effective strategy.
  • Chained headshots work but require precision and time as reinforcements pile up.
  • Once the armor is broken, the fight becomes classic: parry, counter-attack, and deal with enemies dropping ammo and healing items.
