Dead by Daylight: The Judgment Killer Guide - Chorus of Sin
In brief
The Judgment has a revolutionary mechanic in Dead by Daylight: rather than hooking survivors, it can banish them to the Exile through its Divine Light. This guide breaks down its power number by number, from managing piloting and Zeal to the Exile's traps, and explains what survivors can actually do to resist it.
Dead by Daylight released the Chorus of Sin chapter on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, alongside update 10.1.0. It brings a killer, The Judgment, and a survivor, Aurora Stardotter. The DLC is priced at €7.99 on Steam.
The Judgment has an exit no other killer possesses: facing a downed heretic, he can forgo hooking altogether. The French chapter page phrases it this way — "instead of using a hook, the Judgment can banish downed heretics to the Exile". This second realm has its own dangers, and the survivor there manages their survival while the match continues without them. This guide breaks down his power figure by figure, then what survivors can actually do against him.
Two sources, two vocabularies
This needs to be said upfront, because it shapes everything that follows. Behaviour Interactive only publishes its patch notes in English: the August 25 Steam post is entirely in that language. However, the French DLC page on Steam describes the power and perks using the official terms from the French client. We therefore cross-reference the two: the numbers come from the English notes, the names from the French page.
The cross-reference actually reveals a discrepancy that isn't trivial. The English notes title the power Will of the Gods and list Divine Light as its first ability. The French page, meanwhile, writes directly "POWER: DIVINE LIGHT", never mentioning a "Will of the Gods". We retain the French title.
| English notes | French client |
|---|---|
| Divine Light | Divine Light |
| Heresy / Heretics | Heresy / Heretics |
| Exile | the Exile |
| Zealous | Zealous |
| Shrines of Judgment | Shrines of Judgment |
| Seeds of Punishment | Seeds of Punishment |
| Hex: Under Your Thumb | Hex: Under Your Thumb |
| Lay Waste | Lay Waste |
| Celestial Witness | Celestial Witness |
| Fruits of your Labor | Fruits of your Labor |
| Salvation's Cry | Salvation's Cry |
| Boon: Steadfast | Boon: Steadfast |
A word on the general vocabulary, because it's confusing: Behaviour's French page calls "compétences" what the French-speaking community commonly calls perks — "The Judgment's perks", "Aurora Stardotter's Perks". It also writes "skill checks" and "generators" the same way as in English. We follow these labels.
Two items, however, escape the survey: Searcher's Pendant and Exiled Souls, which appear nowhere on the French page. We keep their original names rather than inventing new ones. The same rule applies to the add-ons, none of which are translated in the public documentation.

Holy Light: three seconds of steering, then a throw
The power comes in two phases, and it's the first one that makes the difference between a good and a bad Judgement.
Phase 1, steering. Hold down the power button: a column of light detaches from you and moves away, for up to 3 seconds. You steer it with the camera, sideways only — no up or down. It passes through walls, but slows down when it crosses an obstacle. During this phase, it doesn't harm anyone.
Phase 2, the throw. Press the attack button: the light freezes, has a delay, then becomes lethal. It injures and applies Heresy to any Survivor it hits.
This is where the progression lever lies. The longer you steer, the shorter the delay and the longer the lethal phase lasts. The patch notes give both bounds: the delay starts at 0.9 seconds and drops to its minimum of 0.3 seconds after one second of steering. In other words, one second of patience divides the reaction time given to the Survivor by three. An immediate release is almost always a mistake.
Three more numbers round out the picture:
- Cooldown: 6 seconds.
- Near-miss: 0.5 meters. A throw that misses by half a meter triggers Killer Instinct on the target for 2 seconds. A near-miss still gives you information.
- Aura visible at 48 meters. Once thrown, Holy Light is revealed to Survivors within this range. The figure was 32 meters on the Public Test Build; Behaviour raised it on the grounds that the light moves fast and passes through walls.
Zeal: what an exile grants
When you banish a downed Heretic, you gain Zeal for 60 seconds. During this time:
- Holy Light gains 10% size.
- Its cooldown is reduced by 20%.
- You keep steering for 0.3 seconds longer.
- The 2 nearest Altars of Judgement become active.
- You receive Killer Instinct on all Heretics for 3 seconds — only those whose Heresy meter is full.
Since the Public Test Build, a subtle but decisive fix: under Zeal, Holy Light's curve window is fixed at 0.3 seconds instead of varying with steering duration. Behaviour stands by this as a choice for consistency: the curved trajectory becomes reproducible.
One last point, often misread: if the downed Heretic is already at two hook states, they die instead of being sent to Exile. Exiling counts as a hook state.
Exile, from the Survivor's perspective
Exile works like a hook — except that it doesn't trigger any hook-related perks. Neither on the Killer's side, nor on the Survivors' side. A Killer built around hook effects therefore loses the benefit of those perks every time they exile instead of hook.
Once inside, the Survivor receives a Searcher's Pendant, a limited-use item, and finds themselves facing two categories of items.
Seeds of Punishment injure you: each contact removes 3 seconds from your sacrifice timer. This is the point that has changed the most since the Public Test Build, and not in the Survivors' favor:
| Setting | Test server | Live version |
|---|---|---|
| Timer penalty per contact | 1 s | 3 s |
| Immunity after a contact | 2 s | 0.5 s |
| Gap between two seeds | 3 m | 4 m |
The penalty has been tripled and immunity divided by four: crossing in a straight line is no longer an option. The gap being increased to 4 meters, on the other hand, leaves more room to slip through: that's our reading of it, the studio doesn't present this third setting as a compensation.
The Exiled Souls, for their part, help you. Point the Searcher's Pendant at one of them while holding down the use-item button to collect it. Each soul, up to ten, adds 0.5 seconds to disengage protections — the 10% Haste, Endurance, and Elusive. Ten souls therefore means 5 additional seconds, effectively doubling the base window.
With one major caveat, spelled out in black and white in the patch notes: the Exiled Souls stop granting these protections as soon as all generators are repaired. Late in the match, picking up souls no longer serves any purpose.

Heresy: the skill check that punishes a "good" result
This is the most counter-intuitive mechanic in the chapter, and it deserves to be read twice.
A survivor gains Heresy in two ways: by being hit by the Divine Light, or by taunting the Judgment. The patch notes detail this second case with a humor that leaves no doubt about the intent: crouching repeatedly, gesturing, or lingering in the exit area — "just leave," the text concludes.
What a heretic suffers: special skill checks while repairing generators. And here is the key point to remember. The English patch notes state that a "good" result causes the generator to lose progress. The French version says the same thing differently: progress regresses "when they miss the great skill check zone."
Both phrasings describe the same event. In Dead by Daylight, a skill check succeeded outside the narrow zone is a "good" result; succeeded within the narrow zone, it's "great." Under Heresy, aiming for "good" is no longer enough: it's great or you lose ground. The safety reflex most players rely on — releasing slightly early to avoid missing — becomes exactly the wrong move.
To get rid of it: repent at a Judgment Altar. Heresy will then gradually decrease.
Judgment Altars can also free someone from Exile
Altars appear throughout the Trial. They serve two distinct functions, and the second is the only way out for an exiled survivor:
- Repent to lower one's own Heresy.
- Pray at an active Altar — they are highlighted in red — to free a survivor stuck in Exile. Only survivors who are not themselves in Exile can do this.
Reminder of the cross mechanic: it's the 2 closest Altars that activate at the moment of exile. The Inquisitor therefore knows where his opponents will converge. That's where the game is decided.
A settings menu hidden in the Beta tab
Behaviour has added options specific to this killer, and they're not where you'd look for them: General Settings > Beta tab > The Inquisitor section. Two entries:
- Holy Light Control Settings — a dedicated sensitivity, independent of everything else.
- Killer Instinct Feedback on Near-Miss — enabled by default. Behaviour acknowledges that Killer Instinct can become intrusive and offers the option to turn off this specific feedback. Note: equipping the Heretic's Mark add-on automatically re-enables it.
A known bug you'll need to fix yourself from your very first match: setting the control sensitivity to 0 completely disables the horizontal movement of the Holy Light — that is, its only axis of movement. Setting it to 1 resolves the issue. Behaviour also notes that the tooltip for the near-miss option still displays placeholder text.
The add-ons have changed a lot since the public test
Fifteen add-ons were reworked between the test server and release. The most significant ones:
| Add-on | Change |
|---|---|
| Obsidian Feather | Moved to Ultra Rare rarity. Now prevents manual throwing, further speeds up steering, and reduces its duration |
| Mark of the Adherent | Complete rework: +10% radius outside of Zealous, Uncommon rarity, no more downsides |
| Superheated Glass | Zealous penalty reduced from 50% to 20%. New: breaking an object applies Heresy and makes survivors within 12 meters scream |
| Aurora's Telereceptor | New drawback: heretics who see your aura see it 2 seconds longer |
| Order of Inquisition | Minimum size penalty reduced to 25% (from 50%), maximum bonus reduced to 50% (from 100%) |
| Undying Flame | Radius penalty reduced from 50% to 20% |
| Prayer Kneeler | Loses its throw bonus, keeps the "sticky" slowdown |
| Confessor's War Horn | Duration corrected to 10s — it was actually 8s in practice |
| Searcher's Skull | Blindness increased to 2.5s (from 1.5s), a value that wasn't displayed |
The developer commentary on Aurora's Telereceptor is worth reading: the add-on had proven to be "a very consistent source of aura reading," particularly strong when combined with Lethal Pursuer. The added drawback rebalances this by warning survivors.
Three known issues that concern you
Behaviour lists six; three directly affect matches against the Inquisitor:
- Still Sight can no longer be activated after a rescue from Exile.
- Control sensitivity set to 0 blocks horizontal movement (see above).
- Mettle of Man triggers one hit too early — unrelated to the chapter, but active in the same matches.
What you need to remember
On the killer side: pilot for at least one second before throwing, that's the only way to get the 0.3-second delay. On the survivor side: don't taunt, aim for great skill checks as soon as Heresy rises, and collect your Exiled Souls while the generators are still running — after that, they're worthless.

Key takeaways
- Piloting the Divine Light drastically shortens the enemy's reaction time: one second of patience cuts the delay by a third.
- Exile does not trigger any hook-related perks, which heavily penalizes killers built around those effects.
- The Seeds of Punishment inflict a 3-second penalty to the sacrifice timer on each contact, making a direct route impossible.
- Exiled Souls offer only one real resource: up to 5 seconds of extra unhook protections if all ten souls are collected before the generators are repaired.
- Heresy forces special skill checks where succeeding "greatly" causes you to lose progress — a counterintuitive mechanic that demands real management.
