Clash Royale: the best evolutions after the August 2026 balance changes

In brief

The August 2026 patch shakes up the balance of evolutions in Clash Royale: eleven cards are being reworked, most of them nerfed. Before investing your fragments, you need to understand that you can only place a single evolution under normal conditions, and that these changes affect your entire deck. Witch, Skeleton Barrel spirits, and Princess evolutions become the targets for your next six fragments.

Supercell released the month's balance changes on August 4, 2026, the day after the launch of the K.H.A.O.S. season. About forty cards are affected, but it's the evolutions that take the hardest hit: eleven of them are being reworked, most of them nerfed. The publisher explains that some had dominated the competition for over a year and had become far too powerful compared to their base versions.

The problem is that you can't switch evolutions overnight. Six evolution shards are needed per card, and since the March 2026 rework, a deck only has three special slots left: one evolution slot, one hero slot, and one wildcard slot. Putting your shards in the wrong place means losing weeks of progress.

The framework: three special slots, not four

This is the point many players forget when it comes time to spend their shards. Since the March 2026 update, Supercell has brought the number of special slots down from four to three on the trophy road, in Ranked mode, and in challenges: one evolution slot, one hero slot, and one wildcard slot that can take either an evolution, a hero, or a champion.

The practical consequence: your deck can contain at most two evolutions, and only if you give up heroes and champions. In the vast majority of lists, you only run one. Unlocking an evolution is therefore no longer just one investment among others: it's a choice that shapes the entire deck.

As for resources, shards drop from the Royale Pass, the season shop, challenges, the shop, and level-up chests. The wildcard shard adds a shard to the card of your choice: it's exactly the kind of item you shouldn't waste on an evolution that just got nerfed.

The evolutions taking the biggest hit on August 4

Evolved Mega Knight: the end of permanent control

Supercell lists it among the nerfs and states it plainly: the uppercut no longer triggers on every attack but on every other attack. As compensation, the knockback dealt to heavy troops goes from 2.5 to 4 tiles, a +60% increase.

What made this evolution unbearable to play against wasn't the damage but the loop: every hit launched the opposing troop into the air, prevented it from retaliating, and let the Mega Knight strike again. With only every other hit triggering it, the loop is broken. The evolution remains excellent for shutting down a heavy push in one go, but it no longer locks down a lane by itself. If you haven't invested in it yet, it's no longer a priority.

Evolved Valkyrie: half the damage on her tornado

The tornado's damage drops from 84 to 42, a -50% cut. This is the most brutal nerf of the patch in percentage terms. The evolved Valkyrie used to pull in and wipe out swarms in a single deployment; now, she still pulls them in, but she no longer finishes the job. In practice, you once again need a spell or an area troop behind her, meaning an extra deck slot. An evolution that costs you an additional card to function doesn't deserve your evolution slot.

Evolved Archers, Evolved Barrel of Goblins, Evolved Mega Snowball

Three more subtle nerfs to widely used evolutions:

  • Evolved Archers: powerful shot damage from 168 to 140 (-17%). They remain a safe bet on defense, especially since Spirits now die in one hit against them, but their pressure on towers drops noticeably.
  • Evolved Goblin Barrel: goblin bait damage from 89 to 66 (-26%). The bait no longer functions as a free mini-spell.
  • Evolved Giant Snowball: knockback range reduced from 4.5 to 4 tiles (-11%). On a card whose whole appeal is anticipated placement, losing half a tile changes timings players have memorized.

Evolutions on the rise: where to send your fragments

Evolved Witch: rebuilt, and much more resilient

This is the big winner of the patch, provided you understand what changed. Supercell removed the permanent healing: only the first wave of skeletons now heals. In exchange, healing per skeleton goes from 53 to 153 (+186%) and the maximum hit points jump from 1,040 to 1,451 (+40%).

In other words, the Evolved Witch is no longer a card that sustains itself indefinitely on a lane, but a card that soaks up an enormous amount of damage in a short window. It's a defend-and-counter profile: you drop her on a push, she absorbs it, then she comes back on the counterattack with a stock of hit points that nothing else at this cost offers. If you're hesitating about your six fragments, this is where they pay off the most today.

Evolved Bat Swarm: the invincibility window finally becomes worthwhile

During its invulnerability phase, the Evolved Bat Swarm suffered a 50% attack speed penalty. It drops to 33%. The buff looks technical, but it's actually massive: the immunity window used to serve mainly to survive, now it also serves to deal damage. Against ground tanks without anti-air coverage, the difference shows up immediately on the tower's health bar.

Evolved Princess: a more consistent slow

The slow effect now triggers every two attacks instead of every three, with duration reduced from 7 to 5.5 seconds. Coverage increases and, above all, becomes more consistent: fewer gaps between two applications, resulting in more reliable control over troops advancing toward the bridge.

Evolved Goblin Cage and Evolved Barbarians: trade-offs to weigh

These two are mixed cases, not to be mistaken for buffs:

  • Evolved Goblin Cage: cycles go from 1 to 2, making it noticeably less available, but damage per second rises from 337 to 366 and the capture delay drops from 0.5 to 0.3 seconds. It becomes stronger when it's out, but it comes out half as often.
  • Evolved Barbarians: the 10% hit point bonus disappears, but the rage duration goes from 3 to 5 seconds (+67%). At the same time, base Barbarians gain hit points (691 to 716). The gap between the normal and evolved versions narrows, which argues for saving your fragments elsewhere.

Special case: the Evolved Mortar's attack speed goes from 4 to 4.7 seconds, exactly the value of the base Mortar after its own buff (5 to 4.7 seconds). The evolution no longer provides any rate-of-fire gain. Don't spend anything on it.

The Spirit nerf indirectly penalizes all your evolutions

This is the most underrated side effect of the patch, and Supercell writes it right in the patch notes: stacking spirits allowed players to chain through evolutions and heroes faster for just 1 elixir.

The four spirits — Fire Spirit, Ice Spirit, Heal Spirit, and Electro Spirit — lose 6% of their hit points, dropping from 230 to 217. They no longer automatically connect to crown towers and get eliminated in one hit by Archers, the Archer Queen, the Musketeer, and Tesla. Supercell justifies the change with a 53% usage rate in the top 200 and 31% in Ranked mode over 2026.

For your evolutions, the conclusion is mechanical: decks that stacked spirits at 1 elixir to complete their cycles will now need to bring back real spells and real support troops, and will therefore cycle more slowly. A 2- or 3-cycle evolution becomes noticeably less reliable than it was before August 4th. At comparable raw value, favor a 1-cycle evolution.

A fix actually points in this direction: the Furnace's generation speed goes from 7 to 5 seconds, specifically to offset the nerf to the Fire Spirit it produces.

Champion slot: evolution or hero?

The answer changed on August 4th. All hero and champion abilities switch from a cooldown-based system to single use, with the sole exception of the Goblin Machinist's, which is designed for quick, repeated activations. A hero therefore now only brings a single active effect per deployment, whereas an evolution automatically applies every time the card is played, with no input required.

In a long match, a draw followed by overtime, or simply against an opponent playing defensively, the evolution now pays off more. Putting a second evolution in the champion slot is a much more defensible choice than it was in July.

That said, several heroes have received compensation buffs and deserve a look:

  • Goblinstein's Tombstone Heroine: damage from 320 to 422 (+32%), sight range from 5.5 to 7 tiles, hit points from 4,044 to 4,224. Supercell warns she could be made to attack units if this adjustment isn't enough.
  • Mega Knight Hero: tower damage reduction goes from 50% to 75% and becomes permanent instead of lasting 5 seconds, teleport damage rises from 373 to 399. His ability is being refocused toward eliminating units.
  • Ice Golem Hero: the third explosion now applies a slow instead of a freeze, but damage per explosion jumps from 38 to 69 (+80%), enough to take out Goblins with the combined explosions.
  • Goblinstein and Little Prince: more modest compensation buffs, with the Doctor's damage going from 92 to 135 for the former, and the Guardian's damage going from 217 to 232 for the latter.

Test before you spend: the window closes on August 17th

There's a way to try out the reworked cards without spending a single fragment. Ken's C.H.A.O.S Draft league runs until August 17th, and C.H.A.O.S mode has you build a deck from a selection of cards, all brought up to level 11 — the reference level Supercell uses in its balance notes. So you get to judge the Evolved Witch or the Evolved Bats Swarm on their announced values, without owning them.

One last addition arrived in the evolution list this month: Evolved Elite Barbarians, who periodically throw rage-bladed spears at distant enemies. Too recent to have reliable data yet, it doesn't deserve your frags just yet.

The plan for the coming week can be summed up in three lines: keep your wild cards on hold until the meta has settled, prioritize finishing the Witch Evolution if you're playing a counter-defense deck, and above all, don't finish a Mega Knight Evolution or Valkyrie Evolution you started in July. Supercell notes that these adjustments are experimental and could be reversed: two weeks of hindsight is better than an ill-timed investment.

Frequently asked questions

Should I invest my six fragments in Evolved Witch after this patch?
Yes, without hesitation. She goes from a permanent auto-heal to an explosive defend-and-counter unit with +40% HP. She's the king of buffs in this patch, and her role changes completely: you drop her on a push, she absorbs damage, then she counter-pushes. Nothing else at this cost tanks as much.
Is Evolved Valkyrie still worth it with -50% on the tornado effect?
No. She can no longer clear swarms on her own, so you need a spell or an area-damage troop backing her up, which means an extra deck slot. An evolution that requires one more card to function doesn't belong in your evolution slot, especially with only three slots available.
How does the skeletons' nerf affect my other evolutions?
All four skeleton-type spirits lose 6% HP and die in one hit to crown towers. Decks that stacked them at 1 elixir to cycle fast will now need to add real spells, which means cycling more slowly. Your two- or three-cycle evolutions become less reliable; prioritize evolutions that cycle in one.
Is Evolved Mega Knight broken now?
No, he's still excellent at defusing a heavy push, but the infernal loop is broken. The uppercut now triggers only every other time, so he can no longer lock down a lane by himself. If you hadn't invested yet, he's no longer a priority.
Should I use my wildcard fragment after this patch?
No. Wasting a wildcard on an evolution that just got nerfed would be a mistake. Wait until you badly need an evolution that wasn't affected, or put it toward Witch if you missed out on your six regular fragments.

Key takeaways

  • Evolved Mega Knight loses its infernal control loop: the uppercut now triggers only every other time.
  • Evolved Valkyrie suffers the most brutal nerf (-50% on the tornado effect), no longer able to clear enemy groups on her own.
  • Evolved Witch explodes on defense (+40% HP), shifting from a permanent healer to a massive tank over a short window.
  • Skeletons lose 6% HP and no longer damage crown towers, indirectly slowing down your evolution cycles.
  • Only three special slots available: an evolution locks your slot, so choose wisely.
