Clair Obscur Expedition 33: The Best Tier-1 Pictos and Builds
In brief
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 isn't won on skills alone — it's the Pictos/Luminas build that decides the devastating one-shots. This guide breaks down the tier-1 compositions for each character in the late game: the three universal Luminas to activate urgently, then the specifics for Maelle (pure critical), Lune (chain burns), Sciel (invisible support), Verso (perfect duelist), Gustave (critical-lightning pivot) and Monoco, with synergies and key skills to turn your team into a boss-shredding machine.
Once you get past the first few hours of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, you quickly realize that skills alone aren't enough: it's Pictos and Luminas that decide who blows past the 9,999 damage cap and who stays stuck at 400. With over 200 Pictos scattered across the Nevrons, pigment cages, and Manor shops, choosing the right three runes per character becomes a science in itself. This guide covers the tier-1 "endgame" builds for Gustave, Lune, Maelle, Sciel, Verso, and Monoco, with the key Pictos, priority Luminas, and synergies that turn your expedition members into one-shot machines.
Pictos and Luminas: understanding the core of the system
Each character can only equip three Pictos at a time. A Picto grants two stat boosts (from HP, Defense, Speed, Crit Chance) and a unique passive effect. After four battles with it equipped, the Picto is learned and its passive becomes a Lumina: any party member can then activate it without wearing the Picto, as long as it stays within their total Lumina budget. You increase this budget by collecting Lumicolors from main and optional bosses, eventually unlocking four-digit Lumina budgets by the endgame.
The subtlety: each Picto can only be equipped by one character at a time, but its Lumina can be shared. So you can absolutely keep Painted Power (5 Luminas) equipped on Maelle, while also having Verso and Sciel benefit from it through their own Lumina pools. That's what makes the system so generous: the real game begins when your three characters share the same foundations.

The universal Lumina trio to always have active
Even before customizing per character, these three Luminas should be running on all your damage dealers and most of your supports:
- Painted Power (5 Luminas): removes the 9,999 damage cap. Without it, forget about endgame fights and the Eternal Manor.
- Cheater (40 Luminas): grants an extra turn in a row. A reward from the Sprong boss, this is the Lumina that defines the endgame.
- Mastered Energy (40 Luminas): every AP gain grants one extra. You'll start skills with 8 AP right from the first turn.
Round it out with Second Chance (100% HP revival, once per battle) and Solidification (+2 shields below 50% HP) to shore up any composition. From there, the real customization begins.
Maelle: the virtuoso blade who one-shots bosses
Maelle is the single-target DPS of the roster. The goal: reach 100% crit chance and unleash a Stendhal at 8 AP right from the first turn. In the endgame, she's equipped with the Medalum to start directly in Virtuoso stance, with Defense and Agility pushed to the cap.
Equipped Pictos (all 3 slots):
- Instant Crit: massively boosts crit rate, the pillar of the build.
- Death's Edge: colossal damage as long as health stays low — a perfect combo with Second Chance.
- Full Power: massive damage bonus conditioned on taking no damage.
Priority Luminas: Cheater, Painted Power, Mastered Energy, Energy – Start, Initiative. Skills to equip: Stendhal, Spectral Strike, Fleet Stride, Last Chance, Furious Foil, and Burning Canvas. Let Sciel set up the buffs, Gustave mark the target, and Maelle sweep everything in one strike.

Lune: the elemental mage, between burns and Genesis
Lune has two tier-1 paths depending on the act. Early on, she's played as a burn build with the Lumerim (–1 AP on fire skills, +20% fire damage). In Act 3, you switch to Troubadim or Trébuchim for an Elemental Genesis build that stacks pigments and blows up the screen.
Equipped Pictos (burn build):
- Healing Fire: attacking a burning target restores 25% HP. It's the best passive healing in the game when someone is constantly applying burn.
- Beneficial Contamination: +2 AP when applying a status effect (once per turn). Lune burns on every free shot, so she never runs out of AP.
- Double Burn: obtained at the Manor, it doubles burn application and pushes DoTs to the cap.
Priority Luminas: Painted Power, Cheater, Mastered Energy, Critical Burns, and Instant Crit. Skills: Hell, Wildfire, Immolation, Thermal Transfer, Chaos, and Healing Glow. The Healing Fire Lumina, once unlocked on Lune, also turns Gustave and Verso into passive healing dispensers.
Sciel: the twilight reaper-support
Sciel is the invisible pivot of the best comps. She can clearly DPS with her cards and Twilight phase, but her true potential shows in support: she stacks Powerful, Swift, and Shell on the whole team in a single turn. Signature weapon: the Tisseron (Act 2) then the Litheson or Moisson in the endgame for +20% dark damage in Twilight.
Equipped Pictos (support-DPS build):
- Fleeter Than Fighter: takes an extra turn with 50% less damage. Insane on a support who doesn't need to hit hard, but stacks buffs twice as fast.
- Sudden Death: chance to instantly finish off a weakened target — a perfect combo with her Harvest cards.
- Second Chance: Sciel is fragile, this Lumina guarantees she stays up to cast Final Preparation.
Priority Luminas: Energy – Turn, Solidification, Improved Shell, Extended Powerful, Energizing Heals. Key skills: Final Preparation (global buffs), Enraged Fortune, Intervention (grants a turn to an ally), Dark Purification, and Dark Harvest. Played alongside Maelle and Lune, Sciel becomes the fuel that makes their one-shots possible.

Verso: the Perfection duelist
Verso has a unique gauge — Perfection — that rises with attacking, parrying, and dodging. Each rank unlocks augments and a passive damage bonus. The goal: stay at rank S for as long as possible. The best-in-class weapon is the Chevalam (Verso starts at rank S and gains +20% damage per turn without being hit, stacking five times for a total +100%). In Act 3, the Cadavreso pushes the burn playstyle: 2 burns per Perfection rank on every basic attack.
Equipped Pictos:
- Painted Power: Verso hits so fast he blows past the cap within three turns.
- Beneficial Contamination: every shot applies burn or mark, near-infinite AP.
- Overpowering Mark: multiplies damage on marked targets — a perfect synergy with Gustave.
Priority Luminas: Cheater, Initiative, Mastered Energy, Double Burn, Painted Power. Skills: Radiant Slash, Chain Combo, Perfect Recovery, and Burden. The pattern: free shot to stack burns and marks, basic attack to regain AP, then Chain Combo to finish. Note that Verso forbids healing with certain weapons: embrace the glass cannon.
Gustave: the lightning tactician
Gustave serves two opposite roles depending on your Luminas: tank/support to open fights, or crit/lightning to stack Overload charges and vaporize a single target. Since the Lumina converter is unique to him, he can equip far more Luminas than his teammates — he's your system pivot. Recommended weapons: Gaulteram, Sakaram, or Cruleuram depending on the desired scaling (Crit Chance or Agility).
Equipped Pictos (crit-lightning build):
- Instant Crit: the key to reaching 60-70% crit without having to invest everything into the Crit Chance stat.
- Enhanced Initiative: acts first and applies his marks/burns before everyone else.
- Energizing Fracture: every Fracture applied regenerates a large chunk of AP.
Priority Luminas: Energy – Start, Critical Burns, Elusive, Painted Power, Cheater. Skills: Overload (the heart of the build), Light Assault, Shatter, Storm Strike, Powerful, and Recovery. Tank/support version: swap Instant Crit and Enhanced Initiative for Basic Shield and Solidification, and Gustave becomes the team's survival anchor.

Monoco: the versatile Gestral who buffs everything
Monoco is the Swiss Army knife: his Beast Wheel (Omnipotent, Occult, Brutal, Agile masks) unlocks a dedicated skill per mask, and his passive grants a buff or debuff to the whole team. In the endgame, he's played almost exclusively as a support-buffer with the Ballaro (allows reversing the wheel and grants +1 to +2 AP to all allies depending on the active mask).
Equipped Pictos:
- Fleeter Than Fighter: like Sciel, the damage penalty doesn't matter on a buffer, but taking an extra turn doubles the number of buffs per turn.
- Beneficial Contamination: Chevalière's Ice Slow debuff and Ramasseur Bonk's Fracture recharge AP in a loop.
- Second Chance: guarantees Monoco stays up to cast his crucial buffs.
Priority Luminas: Energy – Turn, Overpowering Shell, Extended Buffs, Energizing Tints. Skills: Troubadour's Trumpet, Boucheclier's Fortification, Pilgrim's Healing, Chevalière's Ice, Ramasseur Bonk, and Ballerina's Charm. Priority stats: Agility 75 / Defense 50 / Vitality 25 for an explosive turn 1.

The top-tier comps to build first
Three compositions have dominated community tier lists since the 1.5.0 update:
- Maelle + Sciel + Lune: the one-shot comp. Sciel buffs, Lune marks/burns, Maelle drops her Stendhal at 8 AP. Eternal Manor bosses go down in one turn.
- Verso + Monoco + Gustave: the tempo comp. Monoco buffs, Gustave marks and breaks armor, Verso chains at rank S throughout the whole fight.
- Maelle + Verso + Monoco: the hybrid burst comp. Two committed DPS, Monoco recharges AP. Ideal against multi-phase bosses where Sciel lacks raw damage.
Note that Healing Fire + Beneficial Contamination + Painted Power form a "universal package" found across all three comps: these are the Luminas to unlock first once you've gotten hold of enough Lumicolors.
Mistakes to avoid and final tips
- Never lock a precious Lumina onto a Picto you're forced to equip — learn it, remove it, and reallocate the Lumina from your budget.
- With Verso using Chevalam or Cadavreso, forget about healing: the passive blocks all recovery, so bet everything on parries and Healing Fire via allies.
- Don't put Instant Crit on a support (Sciel, Monoco): their skills don't benefit from crits, so the stat goes to waste.
- Painted Power only costs 5 Luminas: there's no excuse not to activate it on all three of your party members.
- The Lone Wolf Picto (+50% damage in solo combat) is excellent for single-character challenges: keep it in reserve for the endgame.
To your Pictos!
The builds above cover the vast majority of situations, from the middle of Act 2 through Simon and the Eternal Manor. The real joy of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is that there's no single tier-1: every Picto you find can rewrite your strategy. Farm Lumicolors from optional bosses, learn every new Picto over four battles, and don't be afraid to tear down your entire build to test a new synergy. Happy expedition — and remember: tomorrow comes.

Key takeaways
- Painted Power, Cheater and Mastered Energy are the three non-negotiable Luminas on all your DPS — everything else builds on top of them.
- Maelle one-shots bosses in Virtuoso stance with 100% critical hit chance; Lune alternates burns (Act 1-2) and Elemental Genesis (Act 3) to stack DoTs.
- Sciel is the invisible fuel: her one-turn global buffs (Overpower, Haste, Shell) make Maelle's and Lune's one-shots possible.
- Verso strikes ten times per turn while staying at S-rank Perfection; every burn or mark applied keeps him at the AP cap.
- Gustave acts as the system pivot thanks to his unique converter gauge: he can charge far more Luminas than the others and serve as tank, support, or critical-lightning damage dealer depending on the need.
