In brief

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 hides ten optional super-bosses to unlock after the campaign, from the kaiju Sprong to the Eternal Tower, including intimate duels. Each one offers legendary Pictos, Perfect Chroma Catalysts, and unique weapons that transform your endgame — provided you can find them and defeat them.

In Lumière, once the campaign is wrapped up and Simon is defeated, the real end-game of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 begins. The map fills up with titanic silhouettes, surprise guests, and Chromatic Nevrons ready to remind you that level 99 isn't always enough. Here are the ten optional super-bosses to check off in order to fully clear out Sandfall Interactive's adventure, with their exact location, their nastiest mechanics, and the loot they jealously guard — ultra-rare Pictos, legendary Luminas, Perfect Chroma Catalysts, and unique weapons.

1. Sprong — the kaiju of the Sword Graveyard

Where to find it: in the waters surrounding the Sword Graveyard, between the Vermillion Sylve and the Golden Harvest. Sprong emerges as soon as you approach the shore, but it will wipe you out in one turn if you attempt the fight too early.

Recommended level: level 80+, upgraded weapons, and ideally something to hit for more than 9,999 damage per strike — the Painted Power obtained from the true final boss is highly recommended.

Key mechanics: Sprong chains devastating physical combos that are still very parry-friendly. Its charged energy attacks are the most punishing; fortunately, the parry timing stays clear and readable. Expect to whittle down more than two million HP.

Star reward: the Trickster Picto. Once the Lumina is learned, each character acts twice per turn — the most sought-after Picto in the game, essential for the Eternal Tower. Also on offer: three Grandiose Chroma Catalysts and a hefty amount of experience.

2. Big Head — 156 dodges to chain

Where to find it: in front of the entrance to the Coastal Cave, on the orange-soiled peninsula southeast of Monoco Station. A second, tougher version awaits you in the Hanging Manor in Act 3.

Recommended level: level 50-60 for the continental version, 80+ for the Manor one. Weak to Ice — Lune works wonders.

Key mechanics: Big Head only does one thing, but it does it well. It jumps and crashes down on the party in a series of increasingly fast bounces — up to 24 hits in a row on the coastal version, meaning 156 dodges or perfect parries to hold. At the end, it knocks itself out and gives you a massive Break window.

Star reward: the Warm-Up Picto (+5% damage per turn, stacking up to 25%) and a Resplendent Chroma Catalyst. Bringing a "foot" back to Monoco also unlocks an additional mimicry skill for him.

3. Golgra — the Gestrals' duel of honor

Where to find it: at the back of the Dark Gestral Arena, unlocked after progressing through the fights in the Gestral village. The boss also returns during Monoco's personal quest and on the banks of the Sacred River.

Recommended level: level 70-80. Golgra has no elemental weakness or resistance — prepare a raw damage build.

Key mechanics: the fight is a 1v1 duel imposed by the Gestral rules. You'll therefore need a self-sufficient character, capable of generating their own AP, healing themselves, and dealing heavy spikes of damage. Golgra alternates between fast-paced close-range combos and an enraged phase where its attacks become uninterrupted chains.

Standout reward: a substantial batch of Chromas, a Grandiose Chroma Catalyst, and access to the continuation of the great Gestral tournament — the gateway to the best weapons and the Arena's challenges.

4. Serpenphare — the sky's AP thief

Where to find it: in the sky, above the Sables Blancs on the eastern side of the Continent. You'll need to have unlocked Esquie's flight ability at the start of Act 3. Fly straight into it to trigger the fight.

Recommended level: level 85+ and a support dedicated to AP regeneration.

Key mechanics: at the start of every turn, Serpenphare drains all of your team's AP. If it absorbs too much, it explodes and stuns itself — that's your offensive window. Weak to Lightning — Lune and her Lightning Dance make the most of it. Equip Energizing Turn, Energizing Dodge, and Energizing Parry to survive the AP drain, and Stun Boost to maximize damage during the stun.

Standout reward: the Master of Energy Pictos (+1 on every AP gain), a Pristine Chroma Catalyst, three Grandiose Catalysts, and 2,250,000 experience points — one of the best time-to-loot ratios in the game.

5. Cléa — the healing queen of the Hanging Manor

Where to find her: at the heart of the Hanging Manor, the glass pyramid floating northwest of the Forgotten Battlefields. Accessible by flight after lifting the area's four seals.

Recommended level: level 85-90, weapons at level 32 minimum. Weak to Void damage.

Key mechanics: Cléa permanently summons Chromatic Névrons that tank-shield for her and heal her every turn you fail to parry. To truly prevent her healing, you need to parry the entire sequence of her signature combo — take a single hit and she regains hundreds of thousands of HP.

Standout reward: the Cléa's Life Pictos, a gold defensive item that fully restores HP if you haven't taken damage since the last turn. You'll also walk away with 1 Pristine Chroma Catalyst, 3 Grandiose Catalysts, and 1,950,000 XP. A young boy in the Main Square will then craft an exclusive outfit for Lune, Maelle, or Sciel.

6. Alicia — the intimate duel atop The Reacher

Where to find her: at the top of The Reacher, the makeshift tower west of the Isle of Faces. Esquie's flight is mandatory, along with a relationship level 6 with Maelle triggered at camp after the end of Act 3.

Recommended level: level 85+, a solo Maelle build optimized around the Virtuose stance.

Key mechanics: a 1v1 fight between Maelle and Alicia — her painted form of truth — across three phases. The transitions remain easy to read, but each stage adds rhythm feints to her rapier combos; the perfect dodge is often preferable to the parry, since some hits go straight through the guard.

Standout reward: the legendary rapier Lithum (Void element) — the ideal weapon for Maelle in Virtuoso stance, since striking a Marked target no longer consumes the Mark as long as the stance is active. You'll also get the Painted of Me hairstyle and a nice batch of Chroma Catalysts.

7. Painted Love — the final duo of the Eternal Tower

Where to find it: right at the top of the Eternal Tower, at the end of the 33 trials of the ascent. The high point of the post-campaign end-game.

Recommended level: level 99, maxed weapons, a deck of tier-1 Pictos (Cheater, Painted Power, Master of Energy…). Expect to need several sessions.

Key mechanics: Painted Love is a duo fight bringing together a fused version of the Painteress and the Curator, for a combined total of several tens of millions of HP. Focus on the Curator first, since his buffs constantly refresh the Painteress's aggression. Maelle's stacked burns in Virtuoso stance and Moon Lightning cycles are your best friends here.

Standout reward: the exclusive Ponytail hairstyle for Maelle, the "Eternal" trophy, and a stack of Perfect Chroma Catalysts that round out the whole team's gear.

8. Chromatic Clair Obscur — the Monolith's mirror

Where to find it: at the top of the Monolith, where you defeated the Paintress at the end of Act 2. The chromatic version appears there post-campaign, and can be refought on floor 11 of the Eternal Tower.

Recommended level: level 90+, a roster capable of both inflicting and removing status effects.

Key mechanics: four attack patterns loop in rotation. The four-hit combo ending in a gradient attack, the slow double strike, the weakening jump that inflicts Powerless, and the long-range combo that applies Silence. Dodging is safer than parrying, since the latter doesn't protect you from debuffs. A cleansing Pictos like Cleansing Tint becomes mandatory.

Standout reward: two copies of the powerful Pictos Combo Attack II, five Grand Chroma Catalysts, and a new Lumina Color — enough to finalize several builds at once.

9. Chromatic Bud — the predator that swallows you

Where to find it: on a hidden platform between the Flying Waters and the Manor Suspended in Water, accessible only once Esquie's flight ability has been unlocked.

Recommended level: level 80+, a damage dealer capable of filling the break gauge alone (since one of your characters will be out of combat for a good part of the first phase).

Key mechanics: the fight opens with a brutal gimmick — the Bud randomly swallows a member of your team and removes them from combat. You then need to fill the break gauge to stun it and force it to regurgitate them. Its four- and five-hit combos demand patient reading: first the parry on the volley of skulls, then the tight dodges on the three arm combo strings. Watch out for Exhaustion, which cuts off AP gain — Cleansing Tint is a must-equip.

Signature reward: the Stay Marked Picto — a 50% chance to reapply the Mark after a hit on an already-Marked target, a monstrous damage multiplier for Maelle and Void builds.

10. Osquio — the hidden boss of Verso's Sketches

Where to find it: at the end of the rail path in the Verso's Sketches, the region added by the free "Thank You Update." Take the locomotive at the foot of Esquie's giant head; it drops you off in front of the entrance to a cave reserved for this fight.

Recommended tier: level 90+, a Picto deck that neutralizes damage reduction. New Game+ friendly boss.

Key mechanics: Osquio, Esquie's "evil cousin," alternates between two phases. The second imposes a unique gimmick: every hit taken applies a layer of "Barbapapa" that caps your damage at 1 as long as the stack isn't purified. You therefore need to treat dispelling with as much care as parrying — the combos are slow but readable, and the punishment for a mistake is total.

Signature reward: the Osquio outfit for Verso, unlocked automatically. A cosmetic merchant also appears near the flag and sells the costume for the whole team (5,000 Chromas for the haircut, 20,000 for the outfit).

On an optimized end-game profile, the logical progression is as follows: Grosse Tête to smooth out your dodge timings, Sprong as early as possible to bring back the Cheater Picto that multiplies your options, Golgra to finalize Monoco, then Serpenphare which unlocks the real AP economy. Follow up with Cléa and Alicia for the Lithum rapier and the outfits, before tackling Chromatic Clair Obscur and Chromatic Bud to complete your Picto library. Save Painted Love for last — it's the true glass ceiling of the game. And keep Osquio for New Game+, where the "Barbapapa" mechanic becomes a genuine puzzle. Safe travels, Expeditioner: the painting is waiting to be finished.

What type of super-boss appeals to you most in the endgame?

Frequently asked questions

Do you really need to reach level 99 to attempt these bosses?
No, but almost. Sprong can be done at 80+, continental Big Head at 50-60, but the real challenges (Cléa, Alicia, Amour Dépeint) require 85-99. The minimum threshold mostly depends on your rhythm mastery and build optimization — a skilled player at 80 can clear bosses that an average player at 90 struggles with.
Which Picto should you prioritize hunting first?
Sprong's Cheat Picto. Two turns per character per turn is the core of any endgame damage strategy and is especially essential for breathing room in the Eternal Tower. The others complement it, but this one is foundational.
Is parrying better than dodging in these fights?
It depends. Big Head and Golgra chain better with parrying — it's straightforward rhythm. Alicia and Clair Obscur Chromatique require more dodging to avoid debuffs. Serpenphare is hybrid. Ideally, master both, since even the best fights mix the two.
Are there unique weapons that really change the game after these bosses?
Yes. Alicia's Lithum rapier is the ideal weapon for Maelle in Virtuose stance since striking a Marked target no longer consumes the Mark. It's a small revolution in sustained damage. The other loot mainly shines through the Pictos, which are the real game-changers.

Key takeaways

  • Sprong at the Blade Graveyard rewards the Cheat Picto, the most sought-after artifact for the Eternal Tower — two turns per character, that's game-changing.
  • Big Head forces you to chain up to 156 perfect dodges in a single attack, a rhythm mechanic with no equivalent.
  • Gestral, aerial, and intimate duels (Golgra, Serpenphare, Alicia) demand ultra-specialized solo builds — no team reflexes, just raw execution.
  • Serpenphare offers the best time-to-loot ratio with 2.25M XP and a Perfect Chroma Catalyst for a short but technical fight.
  • Amour Dépeint at the top of the Eternal Tower requires level 99, maxed weapons, and tier-1 Pictos — it's the ultimate mastery check.
