In brief

Square Enix unveiled a new Final Fantasy VII Revelation trailer at gamescom focused on the return of the Weapons, those colossal guardian creatures that ravage the planet indiscriminately. The trailer confirms that the game is entering its final act, with spectacular battles and brand-new exploration mechanics.

Square Enix aired a new trailer for FINAL FANTASY VII REVELATION at gamescom's Opening Night Live on Tuesday, August 25. "Planetary Crisis" in French, presented by Naoki Hamaguchi, the game's director.

The Weapons return, and they don't discriminate

Two minutes built around the Weapons, the planet's colossal guardians. The French press release is direct: unable to tell friend from foe, they "wreak devastation upon the planet and its inhabitants." Cloud and his companions face them across the dunes, in aerial combat and at the bottom of the ocean, all while keeping Sephiroth in their sights.

A point on terminology: the publisher only refers to them collectively, as "the Weapons." The three creatures shown on stage — Ruby Weapon, Emerald Weapon, and Ultima Weapon — have no official French naming for this game. We're therefore keeping the English.

The signal of the home stretch

In the 1997 FINAL FANTASY VII, the Weapons were the optional endgame content, and its toughest bosses. Square Enix describes them as reimagined "original endgame elements." Bringing them out now, after June's trailer mostly set the mood, confirms that Revelation is tackling the trilogy's final act.

The footage then broadens the picture: a brand-new summon, Typhon, exploration by parachute, grappling hook and chocobo, Cloud and Tifa in their FITS warrior and black mage outfits, and Yuffie grappling around Wutai.

The release window hasn't changed: spring 2027 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2, and PC, with full French dubbing according to the Steam listing.
