007: First Light - The Gamer's Preview Broken Down
In brief
IO Interactive brings its stealth expertise to the world of James Bond with 007: First Light, slated for March 2026. The Gamer's preview reveals a clever blend of cinematic linear sequences and Hitman-style sandbox zones, where environmental ingenuity and precision combat create a thrilling and modern Bond experience.
IO Interactive, the specialist in stylish sabotage with Hitman, has decided to talk about the origins of James Bond in 007: First Light. This new espionage action-adventure game should release on March 27, 2026 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2 and PC, and follows a young, impetuous, and sometimes reckless MI6 recruit. After several hours of hands-on demo time, The Gamer's journalist admits he's starting to feel the adrenaline of a supercharged Bond, but here's the thing: the level design oscillates between linear sequences with cutscenes, and open sandbox sequences, in a revisited Hitman style. Picture this: to infiltrate an enemy base without weapons or gadgets at the start, it's just you and your environment. Hack an electrical wire, tip over an electrified water container, lure a guard in... and boom, he gets fried like a plain toast. Later on, you'll have to climb a crane to track down a sniper on the rooftops, playing with the lights to blind him... pure Bond-style cinema, over-the-top and exhilarating.
As for the combat, the blend of hand-to-hand fighting (parry, sidestep, grab) with precision gunfights is particularly well staged: activate Focus for a surgical bullet time, blow up red barrels, and use enemies as human shields, a heady modern touch. Q's gadgets add depth and potential to the gameplay: the Qatch, Q Vision, sickness-inducing darts, blinding laser, and so on.
On the graphics front, James Bond in 007: First Light already shows off nice textures, polished animation, a more modern take on the formula, and finally a narrative that gradually reveals a larger conspiracy. The missions are guided but full of options: steal a pass by poisoning an NPC? Or infiltrate a crowded hotel via CCTV... IO, beyond just an honest imitation, seems to have understood the essence of Bond (gadgets, mayhem in the style of Henri Verneuil), and as you've gathered, The Gamer's preview leaves us very eager to see what comes next!
