In brief

NC confirms Aion 2's presence at gamescom 2026's Opening Night Live, on Tuesday, August 25 at 8:00 PM (Paris time), streamed for free on YouTube, Twitch, and Steam. Unlike Cinder City and Project Bonfire, the publisher isn't promising any major trailer or big reveal, simply reminding fans that early access opens on September 30.

NC, the publisher formerly known as NCSOFT, confirmed on August 6 that Aion 2 will be part of the lineup for Opening Night Live at gamescom 2026. The event is scheduled for Tuesday, August 25 at 8:00 p.m., Paris time, with a free broadcast on YouTube, Twitch and Steam. This is the publisher's first public statement on the MMORPG since July 22, and above all the last major media window before the early access launch on September 30.

The announcement isn't limited to the MMO. NC is bringing three games to the Cologne stage: Aion 2, Cinder City, and a still-unnamed project currently referred to under the code name Project Bonfire. The press release is noticeably more detailed about the latter two titles than about Aion 2, and this asymmetry is worth pausing on before getting carried away over a hypothetical major reveal.

Here, then, is what NC actually wrote, what it carefully avoided writing, and the list of information still missing for Western players 53 days before the servers open.

What NC is announcing in black and white — and what it isn't promising

The press release simply states that the three titles will be "featured" during Opening Night Live. The text then becomes much more explicit about only two of them.

  • Cinder City: NC promises the broadcast of a new trailer focused on the world and story of its open-world third-person shooter.
  • Project Bonfire: the title will be publicly revealed for the first time, with the announcement of its final name and a presentation of its founding concepts.
  • Aion 2: no trailer, no demo, no reveal has been announced. The press release merely reiterates that Founder's Packs are on sale and grant access to the early access launch on Wednesday, September 30.

Korean press outlets, which relayed the local version of the press release on August 6 and 7, add a useful framing: NC presents gamescom as the final checkpoint before launch, and as a way to expand its points of contact with an international audience. In other words, the stated goal is visibility and pre-order conversion, not necessarily a blockbuster announcement.

A fourth title from the group will be present in Cologne without appearing on stage: Guild Wars 3, developed by ArenaNet, will be confined to the B2B professional area, as noted by Inven Global and Gamemeca. General public visitors to the show will therefore not see it.

Opening Night Live: date, time and where to watch from France

Opening Night Live isn't gamescom itself: it's the big opening show, broadcast the day before the halls open. The key details to remember:

  • Tuesday, August 25, 2026, 8:00 p.m. Paris time (11:00 a.m. PT / 2:00 p.m. ET).
  • Free, worldwide broadcast on YouTube, Twitch and Steam.
  • Hosted by Geoff Keighley, alongside Eefje "Sjokz" Depoortere.
  • Usual format: roughly two hours of world premieres, trailers and announcements.
  • The show itself then takes place at Koelnmesse in Cologne, from Wednesday, August 26 to Sunday, August 30.

On such a packed evening, a Korean MMORPG never gets a long segment. The most likely format for Aion 2 comes down to one to two minutes of video, possibly accompanied by a date card. Better to calibrate expectations accordingly.

Why NC needed this slot

The calendar explains everything. The Opening Night Live falls 36 days before the early access on September 30 and 41 days before the general opening on October 5. That's exactly the window where a publisher looks to fill its servers and sell off its founder packs.

On the Western side, however, NC had gone radio silent for a month and a half: the last announcement posted on Aion 2's Steam page dates back to July 22, with the "Founder's Pack Content Showcase". Meanwhile, the Korean version kept rolling out weekly patches, which created a sense of disconnect for the European audience, who see update notes go by without being able to touch them.

There is also an instructive precedent. At gamescom 2025, NCSOFT unveiled Cinder City during the Opening Night Live, then followed up with three days of playable demos reserved for press and content creators at its B2B booth, as well as an appearance at NVIDIA's event. Aion 2 was already part of the house selection that year. There's no guarantee the pattern will repeat, but if impressions from European journalists come out after August 26, they will most likely come from there.

The information still missing, 53 days before launch

This is the real point of concern for a European player considering getting involved. As we write this, several essential logistical details still haven't been published:

  • Preloading: no date announced for the West. In Korea, it opened three days before launch, on November 16, 2025, for an opening on the 19th.
  • The list and names of the servers, as well as a possible character name reservation. The Korean precedent calls for caution: the 20 servers opened for reservation on October 16, 2025, 10 for the Elyos and 10 for the Asmodians, all filled up in under two minutes.
  • The exact time the servers open on September 30, and the reference time zone chosen for the European region.
  • The exact content of the Western build at launch, in particular whether or not the ninth class that appeared in Korea in July will be present, and the pace at which it will catch up with Korean updates.

None of these four points has been promised for the Opening Night Live. They typically fall under service-related communication, published on Steam or on the official website, rather than a televised show. The most credible scenario therefore remains the following: a video on August 25, followed by a wave of logistical announcements in the second half of September.

Business model: what the Steam page says today

One point deserves clarification, as it's circulating in contradictory forms. Aion 2's Western Steam page, app 3393110, currently displays the label "Free To Play" and a release window set for September 2026, which corresponds to early access. NC has for its part stated that the game will be accessible without a mandatory purchase.

The nuance, widely documented since the monetization reveal on July 22, lies in the optional subscription priced at around $15 a month: it gates access to the auction house and the conversion of premium currency, Quna, into kinah. In other words, playing is free, but fully participating in the economy isn't. It's a leaner structure compared to Korea, where several membership tiers stack on top of each other. If the Opening Night Live were to bring one genuinely useful clarification, this would be the area.

French in Aion 2: text yes, voice acting no

A detail rarely pointed out yet verifiable in two clicks: the Steam page lists the supported languages precisely. French appears for the interface and subtitles, alongside German, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, and Russian.

However, only four languages get full audio support: English, Japanese, Korean, and Traditional Chinese. There will therefore be no French voice acting at launch. The publisher's official screenshots confirm this approach: the character creation screen does offer a voice setting, but with four default voices to choose from among the dubbed languages.

Practical takeaway for the French-speaking community: until a screenshot of the French client has circulated, the skill, dungeon, and item names relayed by English-language aggregators remain working translations, not official labels. Caution is therefore warranted with the content lists already going around.

Gamescom 2026 in practice

The context of the show helps gauge the competition Aion 2 will face on stage. Organizers announced on July 21 that the entire exhibition space was fully booked, a first in the event's history, following a 2025 edition that already counted 1,568 exhibitors. Konami, Tencent Games, Embark Studios, and Level Infinite are joining a lineup that already includes Xbox, Nintendo, EA, Ubisoft, and Capcom.

In other words, the 2026 Opening Night Live is shaping up to be crowded. For an MMORPG that still needs to win over a Western audience wary of Korean monetization models' reputation, grabbing two minutes on stage between two blockbusters is useful, but won't be enough to sway the undecided.

What to watch for on August 25

Three signals are worth watching during the broadcast. The first: does NC show footage of the Western build, with a localized interface and Chapter 1 content, or does it recycle Korean footage already seen at Summer Game Fest? The second: an end card mentioning a pre-load or name reservation would be enough to kick off the whole logistical timeline. The third: an explicit mention of the European region and its servers, absent so far from public statements.

Until then, there's no rush. Founder's Packs will remain on sale until launch, and nothing requires committing before seeing what NC puts on the table in Cologne. For players still on the fence, waiting until the morning of August 26 remains the most rational decision: seventeen days of patience versus firsthand information — the trade-off is easily made.
