Solving Method by Difficulty

The solving method for the puzzle changes depending on the difficulty selected. Indeed, each difficulty provides different clues, and different scarecrow configurations. Here are the instructions to follow for each mode.

Story Mode Solution

In a way, this is the only puzzle in the game that is harder in Story Mode than in Hard Mode, if only because some of the clues are a bit more indirect...

Each scarecrow you successfully help in Story Mode gives you a new part of the Flash Cards document.

Clue 1: "Who are you? Why must you always be different from the others? Monster."

Solution: Remove the nail from the only girl openly carrying a knife.

Clue 2: "Who are you? Honestly. You are helpless without me."

Solution: Remove the nail from the only girl who isn't visibly armed.

Clue 3: "Who are you? I will be your friend. Otherwise, you would be so miserably alone."

Solution: There is only one girl in the crowd with a yellow floral brooch on her blouse. She's the one you need; all the other girls have either a heart-shaped brooch or no brooch at all.

Clue 4: "Who are you? Tell me, really. You two are nothing more than friends, right? I've always watched you when you weren't looking, you know."

Solution: This one is tricky. Look at the girl in the middle of the group. She's looking directly at a boy, and there's a girl right behind her with her arms crossed, positioned as if she's watching the first one. Remove the nail from the scarecrow that's looking at the boy.

Tip

There are a few hostile scarecrows mixed into the 4th group. If you're not in the mood for a zombie party right now, or if you don't want to wear down your weapon's durability on them, you can lure the inactive scarecrows into an isolated corner of the field and simply walk away while looking at them!

Clue 5: "Who are you? Yes, you."

Solution: Remove the nail from the scarecrow whose hairstyle most closely resembles Hinako's: the girl with short hair at the back of the group.

Hard Mode Solution

Every scarecrow you successfully help in Hard Mode gives you a new part of the document Article: Child Drowned in a Canal.

Clue 1: "Can you imagine how I feel? I'll put on my polite smile for now."

Solution: Only one of the girls in this group is smiling. Remove her nail.

Clue 2: "Can you imagine how I feel? What it's like to have been deceived by you for so long?"

Solution: One of the girls has a knife in her hand and a second knife in her back. Remove her nail.

Clue 3: "Can you imagine how I feel? He never looked at me the way he looked at you. Not once."

Solution: The scarecrows are paired by gender, but only one girl is stuck looking at a boy whose back is turned to her. Remove her nail.

Clue 4: "Can you imagine how I feel? You've always been a horror to look at."

Solution: This one is subtle, but the right scarecrow is the girl who looks unhappy with her neck tilted to the side, as if she's actively trying to avoid looking at what's in front of her.

Clue 5: "Can you imagine how I feel? You hurt me, and you even hurt him too. Do you know what it's like to force a smile when I look at your disgusting face?!"

Solution: A few girls in this group have knives in their backs, but if you play with the camera perspective, only the one with her head lowered is smiling. Remove her nail.

Lost in the Fog Mode Solution

Using the clues that are revealed will help you discover a page of Rinko's Document containing 5 map parts.

Clue 1: "It's your funeral today. I think I'll give you a standing ovation."

Solution: Remove the nail from the pigtailed scarecrow that's motionless with its head turned almost 180°. Honestly, the clue doesn't make that much sense in this case.
 

Clue 2: "It's your funeral today. Good riddance. Looks like I've finally gotten this painful burden off my conscience."

Solution : The clue seems to be talking about the girl with a knife stuck in her chest, but the key word here is "burden". We want the girl with the knife on the ground in front of her as if she had dropped it.

Clue 3: "It's your burial today. You hurt him, and now you're leaving him behind. Let's hope you feel the weight of guilt for your actions."

Solution: There's a scarecrow boy on the ground in the middle of this group with a knife in his chest. Pull out the nail of the girl who has no knife and who has her back turned to him.

Clue 4: "It's your celebration today. He was a real pain... Always between him and me."

Solution : Start from the scarecrow girl who is directly in front of the clue and look in the direction she's looking towards the boy who is on the other side of the group. So pull out the nail of the scarecrow girl placed between him and the first one.

Clue 5: "It's your celebration today. Farewell and never show your face again. Go get up to mischief, as usual."

Solution : This clue doesn't work at all the way you might imagine. Instead of dealing with the posted scarecrows, you have to go right to look for the dead scarecrow on the ground near the hay cart.

Walk in the direction the dead scarecrow is pointing until you find a second corpse also pointing in a direction.

Keep following the corpses of these students until you find a scarecrow standing alone. Remove its nail to solve the puzzle, and finally leave the field!
